Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, September 22, 2020

Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah indicated Tuesday he supports moving forward with consideration of a Supreme Court nominee during an election year, providing crucial backing to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as he proceeds with filling the vacancy on the high court just weeks before Election Day.

There's never been a doubt in my mind that they'll seat a justice before the end of the year if not the the election.

Romney won't look a gift horse in the mouth to politicize the SCOTUS in his direction, nor will he cross the very red voters in his state.

-There's no doubt in my mind that a Biden win means four new SC Justices.

You're sure Biden will get those vacancies, you mean?

Or are you saying there is no doubt in your mind that 4 vacancies will occur and Biden will get his picks through the process?

That's a tremendous amount of optimism.

I hope not. That starts us down a long, dark road.

Not that I see any other path given the complete lack of faith the GOP governs with, but I just don't like where it takes us.

Especially when it becomes an election talking point that will only serve to energize the right.

Ultimate irony: If in 2020 election Dems sweep Senate, White House, and HoR and approve court-packing statute (e.g. doubling number of total federal judges) planning on filling those spots with sane/non-corporatist judges. Repubs then tie up expansion in courts until they've had a reversal of electoral fortunes as pendulum swings other way and the president and senate become dominated by Repubs again. The Repub president then fills all those spots with the blessing of conservative 6-3 SCOTUS ruling approving the Dem court expansion plan.

Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit huffing jenkem.

And there were... other similarities. Put it that way.

Mitt Romney releases tax returns

Mitt Romney offered a partial snapshot of his vast personal fortune late Monday, disclosing income of $21.7 million in 2010 and $20.9 million last year--virtually all of it profits, dividends or interest from investments.

None came from wages, the primary source of income for most Americans. Instead, Romney and his wife, Ann, collected millions in capital gains from a profusion of investments, as well as stock dividends and interest payments.

The couple gave away $7 million in charitable contributions over the past two years, including at least $4.1 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Romney's family has for generations been among the Mormon Church's most prominent members.

The Romneys sent somewhat less to Washington over that period, paying an estimated $6.2 million in federal income taxes. According to his 2010 return, Romney paid about $3 million to the IRS, for an effective tax rate of 13.9 percent.

Harry Reid when he made all this possible.

Short sighted action by Reid was likely forewarned against for this very reason.

Of course, you can't escape the backdrop of McConnell's slimy hand being behind that too in his absolute obstruction of a POTUS who was elected by far wider margins than any recent Repub POTUS.

In the end, all roads lead to GOP playing dirty because they are a ruling minority power stuck in their ways and devoid of good ideas. Dem ham handed assistance is only that.

Bork following Nixon's orders in the attempt to cover up his own criminality was essentially the equivalent of Bill Barr's machinations today. So cries that somehow Bork being denied a seat are preposterous on their face. Bork facilitated a criminal cover-up, thus disqualifying himself for any SCOTUS seat or at least he did in the eyes of 58 Senators who voted against him.

I get tired of the GOP trying to act as though Bork's opponents had no principles upon which to justify their stance. It would literally be analogous to Trump nominating Bill Barr for Ginsburg's former seat and then having all the GOPers take the vapors trying to express their outrage.

Bork got exactly what he deserved for abdicating his responsibility to the Constitution for his loyalty to Richard Nixon instead.

Basically, what is being established by the GOP over the last years is that from here forward, there will be no SCOTUS nominations other than those from the party that controls both the Senate and the White House from this point forward.

So now, the game will be to gain and maintain control of both branches of the US government or forget receiving anything other than a pocket veto from the Senate majority leader if the nominee doesn't come from the same party's President.

Welcome to the new world.

Our recent times have brought such conduct into clear focus in a way that it wasn't back in the 1980s.

And McConnell and the GOP blocked qualified judges from being seated for no reason whatsoever but for obstruction. That is why the district-level filibuster was lifted.

And Mitch dropped the SCOTUS filibuster so fast no one even mentions it, but Kavanaugh would never have been seated without it being eliminated and neither would Gorsuch.

And if anyone thinks that if Reid hadn't moved first that McConnell would have let Gorsuch and Kavanaugh die on the vine are batguana crazy.

There was the recognition that both sides were duly elected and that governance was a mix of both sides working together.

This is how the government should work. In an ideal word.

But that's not how our government is currently working.

Growing up. I never use to hear about red states or blue state. We were just America. Or, the United States of America.

I knew the south was more conservative. They were the Bible Belt.

But there was never a them vs us. A blue vs red. We were one nation, indivisible.

If anything. That mentality is what's destroying our nation to think any state is red or blue is ridiculous. California or Florida or Texas or New York or any state has people from all political spectrums living in them.

This division amongst states weakens the nation. Weakens America. It only benefits other countries. Like Russia and China. Probably North Korea and Iran too.

Unfortunately we're stuck in this downwards spiral. Social media feeds our division and Trump is doing his best to cement it.

I've repeatedly said as soon as McConnell has the votes he'll nominate our next Supreme Court Justice.

I'm not deluded enough to believe republicans will choose to postpone.

Why should they? I doubt Democrats would.

As for what Zed said. Who knows. We didn't consult each other before he posted that.

My first post was #68.

Which was describing an ideal government.

Which I said isn't what we have.

My second post was calling out Eberly's bullshht.

After that it was just you coming after this D.

As time goes by, the more and more I feel like the federal government does, in no way, represent anything I believe in or stand for. And from what I read, the federal government does not act in a way that represents the interests or desires of the majority of the American people. In fact, the current republican Senate and White House are acting not only against the interest of the American people, but in a dangerous and destructive way, causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of it citizens, flaming tensions over police brutality and blatantly stealing power from democrats.

I place the blame primarily on republicans.

Although the roots of this corruption go way before the current president, beyond Obama, beyond even the 2000 election, but in the past 20 years the republicans stole an election, started wars of aggression, refused to work with a Democratic president, colluded with a foreign power to corrupt our elections, blackmailed a foreign power to corrupt a second election, stole SC seats. And so much more.

Vote you say? With all of the known and unknown efforts to steal this election? Dubious solution, at best, I say.

What option is left me/us? I fear for the future.

God, how our country would be different if Gore hadn't conceded. For the better.

It ended when a bipartisan coalition of 58 Senators voted not to confirm Robert Bork? That's weird.

Yeah, that 7-2 SCOTUS decision was a real stumper. #103 | Posted by LIVE_OR_DIE

I mean, if you can't count, those numbers would be correct. Unless you're ignoring that Breyer and Souter wanted to remand to the Fl Supreme Court to have that court establish clear and consistent guidelines for the recount. But the conservative majority kneecapped that idea and appointed W president. But yes, it was a stumper. In fact O'Connor later said that decision was a mistake.

But you just go on being you. Don't ask yourself how this country went centuries with presidents appointing justices with the "advice and consent" of the Senate even when they were of different parties. Just go ahead and keep pretending that we never had comity between parties where, disagreements aside, we tried to provide for the welfare of all of its people. Not just blue states or red states. Back then of course, we usually weren't governed by egomaniacal narcissists turning American against American in the hope that he could win another term so he could continue to rob this country blind and avoid prison.

"Yeah, that 7-2 SCOTUS decision was a real stumper."

Bush v Gore was a 5-4 decision based strictly on partisan politics and was so egregious that the politicians who gave the Presidency to Buss also said it could not be used as a precedent in the future.

Senator Mitt "Mittens" Romney talks tough, but he can be relied on for tRump's necessary daily tongue baths. Somebody ought to ask him which of tRump's axx cheeks is his favorite. Maybe there's a daily raffle for the honor of kissing Dear Leader's taint. I try not to judge others, but here we are.

#108 | Posted by john47 at 2020-09-23 10:20 AM | Reply

I suppose in the end, Romney only caters to to the majority when it really can't hurt the GOP.

Words against Trump really don't hurt, big picture. But it portrays Romney as tough.

Voting against Trump in impeachment doesn't really hurt, because there's no way he's actually going to be impeached. Again, makes Romney look tough.

But when you already know there's two votes, and you're going to be the third that forces a VP tiebreaker (and potentially one more defect to literally end it), he sides with his party.

That would have been being tough rather than looking tough.

What was Romney's take back in 2016? Did he think they should have hearing for Garland?

#109 | Posted by brass30 at 2020-09-23 10:58 AM | Reply

#109 I also think Romney distinguishes between Trump's lawlessness, which many think harms the Republican brand long term, and getting a 6-3 majority on SCOTUS which is something any Republican can get behind. He's not all that inconsistent if you think of him as one of the few remaining establishment Republicans.

#110 | Posted by JOE at 2020-09-23 11:02 AM | Reply

Joe - really good analysis, and think you're spot on.

For the record, I think the GOP should absolutely put up a nomination. Where does it say they can't?

But the GOP should have had a hearing for Garland back in 2016. Where did it say they can't?

We can all agree the GOP really played dirty pool with Obama's court nominations across the board.

#111 | POSTED BY BRASS30

The GOP played dirty pool with Obama all across the board. On day one of Obama's first term over a $51 dollar steak dinner they all agreed to block anything and everything that Obama wanted to achieve during his presidency. They swore to block everything he did they swore to find his Waterloo and destroy him.

And he didn't deserve any of it.

And now they scream bloody murder when the Dems do they same to Trumpy. And he deserves every bit of it.

"and getting a 6-3 majority on SCOTUS which is something any Republican can get behind."

Even though a majority of the American people are very opposed to such a court and the rulings it will surely make. McConnell and the Republicans in the Senate are making the case for the Democrats to pack the court. Paybacks are a bitch but these Republicans deserve a huge payback. They may just get it.
