...The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 200,000 on Tuesday " reaching what was once the upper limit of some estimates for the pandemic's impact on Americans. Some experts now warn that the toll could nearly double again by the end of 2020.

After all, Trump is telling people that it's only the old and infirm and those who live in Blue states (which is becoming code for where it's mostly black and brown people).

Coronavirus Perspective (March 2020)
www.hoover.org

...The world is in a full state of panic about the spread and incidence of COVID-19. ...

The most dramatic news of the day has been the sudden spike in the number of Italian cases, totaling 24,747 with 1,809 deaths, which may grow to exceed the 3,099 in China.

Overlooked is the good news coming out of China, where the latest report shows 16 new cases and 14 new deaths, suggesting that the number of deaths in the currently unresolved group will be lower than the 5.3 percent conversion rate in the cases resolved to date. In my view, we will see a similar decline in Italy, for reasons that I shall outline in the remainder of this article.

From this available data, it seems more probable than not that the total number of cases world-wide will peak out at well under 1 million, with the total number of deaths at under 50,000.

In the United States, the current 67 deaths should reach about 5000 (or ten percent of my estimated world total, which may also turn out to be low)....

I'd like to emphasize this. Donald Trump and his True Believers have no concern over dead or suffering children (of other people). They showed this long before COVID.

When we are on the other side of this election and by the grace of God a human being is once again in the White House, there will have to be a serious and protracted national debate about why America raises so many vicious assh----.

I wish @realDonaldTrump would take one night off from his rallies and watch the families who have lost sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers. If you watched and had anything approximating a heart, you'd stop lying to us and start helping save these people.

There is no excuse for Donald Trump but also you Trump supporters have no excuse either. He is a Sociopath so we understand how he operates but what is the excuse for the rest of you? Can any of us imagine the arrogance of having 200,000 people dead and still claiming to have done a great job? It's simply unbelievable. The highest death toll in the world for the richest nation in the world and still claiming to have done a great job???? I understand the Liar in Chief saying that but how do the rest of you hear it and cheer? Really, how do you do it???? You do realize that no one will ever believe anything you say again for the rest of your lives??? Your children won't believe you unless they suffer from the same mental lllnesses you do.

Trump can make his own point. He doesn't need you to explain his meaning. He said virtually nobody young is affected. This is not true. Trump has plenty of explainers. Why do you bother? His words speak for themselves. I see a callous and short sighted disregard for human life and well being. If trump is correct in his assessment of things surely he doesn't need people cleaning up his statements.

Live with what he actually said.

That's a death rate, not an "infection rate." At last count, at lease 7 million Americans have been infected in the last six months or so. That is a 2.1% infection rate. Not all of the infected die. However some are left with long-lasting or permanent injuries.

But, please go on trying to use your exemplary science skills to defend the walking turd president who cares not a whit about 200,000 dead Americans and 7 million infected. Also be sure to cite 4 dead from "Benjamin Ghazi!" and 2 dead of Ebola under Obama, as suits your needs.

More of what Pres Trump said...

It affects virtually nobody': Trump downplays virus threat to young people
www.politico.com

...President Donald Trump claimed Monday at an Ohio campaign rally that the coronavirus poses little threat to young people and "affects virtually nobody," as the number of Americans to have died from Covid-19 climbed toward 200,000 in the United States.

"It affects elderly people. Elderly people with heart problems and other problems. If they have other problems, that's what it really affects," Trump told supporters at an airport outside Toledo.

"That's it. You know, in some states, thousands of people, nobody young. Below the age of 18, like, nobody," he continued. "They have a strong immune system, who knows. You look " take your hat off to the young, because they have a hell of an immune system. But it affects virtually nobody. It's an amazing thing." ...

I disagree, he is a well known liar so we expect lies to spew from his mouth. No, what is amazing is that his fans hear the lies and believe them even though any rational person knows he's lying. ABC News has reported about young people dying from COVID many times and so have most other news outlets so how are his supporters unaware of that fact? I don't think they are but they just won't desert their Dear Leader no matter how dishonest he is because he represents something different to them: closet racism. He and they don't actually use the "N" word but they haven't changed in their hearts and minds, they just know not to use certain words. This election reminds me of elections back in the 1960's when race was a real factor.

Child Covid Hospitalizations Rose in Summer, CDC to Tell Senate
www.bloomberg.com

...Hospitalization rates among children with Covid-19 increased during the summer, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The revelation is part of prepared testimony from U.S. health officials who will update a Senate health committee Wednesday on the nation's Covid-19 response. The hearing will likely cover many topics, including possible political interference by the White House in the operations of the CDC and other agencies.

"Though the mortality rate is low for children aged 18 years and younger, Covid-19"associated hospitalization rates increased among this age group during the summer," according to the testimony....

The most at risk are "elderly people with heart problems and other problems...That's it"

Apart from the obvious falseness of his statement, Trump's point is what? That this group doesn't count? That their lives being cut short is a blessing in disguise because they would not have enjoyed any additional years anyway? After you, President Trump!

There are around 50m citizens in the US at risk because they are over 65 and a further 40m at risk in lower age groups because they have 1 or more health issues. Over 90m US citizens at risk and Trump characterizes it " that's it."

I would have expected Trump to care for the elderly at least until they vote for him in November but he seems willing to abandon at risk groups to maintain the facade that he has this thing under control, this being a critical part of his re-election campaign.

There's something extremely odd about Trump's behavior as of late.

He seems not at all worried about the election. Matter of fact. Not only is he acting like he's already won it. He's also planning his inauguration parade in the style of North Korea.

Now. This could just be Trump ignoring reality and pushing forward, like he does.

Or. It could be Trump knows something we don't. Like the fix is already in and he's already got the win.

Regardless. I have also noticed Trump absolute disregard for potential voters.

Second, you've used (more than) all Americans in your denominator, meaning the only way for the rate to go is UP; every new infection makes the rate rise.

#41 - My view is that Trump is incapable of showing any weakness, hence his public displays of nonchalance regarding re-election.

His private thoughts are a different matter and he must recognize that the pandemic is a serious threat and one which he cannot bully or cower into submission. You cannot threaten to primary a virus, or withdraw funding. And every death is a public reminder of his failure, both of leadership and priorities, since re-election is his only priority.

The virus has shown Trump to be absolutely out of his depth in the job of leading the US. It's not like withdrawing from the Paris climate accord, or introducing tariffs against China, or advocating a wall as a solution to immigration issues; any assessment of the success or failure of these is subjective and can be spun. 200,000 dead - not so easy.

His odd behavior, if it is indeed worse than before, is a consequence then of being out of control, of having no medically acceptable policy for dealing with the virus that would not involve a very public reversal of prior positions and realizing that the virus is not going away. If Europe is any guide, the US should be preparing for phase 2 and this cannot be good for Trump's re-election chances..

Just to complete Ray's innumerate post, the current estimate is that 10 percent of this country has been infected with COVID-19 and its killed at least 200,000. That means each percent of infection kills 20,000 Americans. If all Americans become infected and die at the same rate as the current numbers, we can count on 2 million Americans dead by the time everyone has been infected, assuming we cannot be reinfected (which is a big assumption).

I wonder how many Americans a Trumpette needs to see die before they admit that they chose a bad president. As always, my guess is that no number will ever be high enough for someone so benighted as to follow Orange Messiah to ever admit that they are in the wrong.

First, you're using deaths as "infection rates". That's untrue; infection rates have been 30 times that rate.

Even if I said death rate I still would have gotten a negative response.

And that is assuming the statistics represent reality, which they are not.
The PCR test cannot identify a complete virus. It can only detect genetic material. So it yields an abundance of false positives.

This pandemic is a scam. I do not think it is a scam. I know it is a scam. One of the reasons has to do with Trump's reelection.
