Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Costco recently removed a popular pimento cheese brand from 120 of its stores after the owner called the Black Lives Matter movement a "terror organization" on his public Facebook. In reaction to the murder of two local residents, Brian Henry, founder of Palmetto Cheese and mayor of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, took to Facebook on Aug. 25 with a message many residents considered to be racist in nature. ... "I am profoundly sorry to those I offended with my post last week. My comments were hurtful and insensitive," Henry said at the conference in a prepared statement.

"I am sickened by the senseless killings in Georgetown last night. 2 [sic] innocent people murdered. Not 2 thugs or people wanted on multiple warrants. 2 white people defenselessly gunned down by a black man," Henry wrote. "So why do we stand by and allow BLM to lawlessly destroy great American cities and threaten their citizens on a daily basis ... this has gone on too long. Rise up America. This BLM and Antifa movement must be treated like the terror organizations they are."

He did not address the NAACP's call for his mayoral resignation, but did ask that people consider the hundreds of South Carolina workers Palmetto employs before boycotting the brand.

Why is it that he thinks other people should be considerate when he obviously wasn't considerate of people supporting the BLM movement? He should have been thinking about his employees before making such a dumba.. comment.

It's cheese for ----- sake. Why is everything a federal case with this ----. The co. Employs hundreds of people. I assume many of them are black. Are their jobs and incomes expendable in the name of being so righteous? The man apologized. He can't take it back. There is no do over machine. I am sympathetic to BLM but at this point it's getting like an inquisition,of self righteousness. Give it a rest. If this ---- continues it will set back race relations, not improve them.

Not to worry. Trump and his Trumpublican army will soon buy up the cheese.

#7 | Posted by ClownShack at 2020-09-23 01:45 PM | Reply

Was it the free market? How do you know? Sounds like Costco corporate covering their ass, not the "free market". If polled, my guess is that many would still want it available. What about them?

#8 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-09-23 02:03 PM | Reply

Isn't consumer sentiment the basis of the "free market" in the first place?

#9 | Posted by WhoDaMan at 2020-09-23 03:06 PM | Reply

Isn't Costco's corporate management reponsible for maintaining the value of the brand? And if something makes the brand look bad to customers, they should do something about that, no?

Whatever happened to people taking personal responsibility for their actions? He did something that he admitted was wrong. Now it is time to pay the piper. Why is that a bad thing?

Saying you're wrong and expecting no adverse consequences is a child's way of thinking of things. There needs to be consequences to bad behavior lest there be more bad behavior. People must think before they act; not just of themselves but of others that may get hurt.

Boycotting the product is over the top. He said something that offended some people. He apologized, explain how this is not disproportionately harsh to the crime? Which by the way wasn't a crime. Many innocent people will be hurt by this. Are their losses unimportant? The whole BLM thing is getting to be too much like an inquisition, they are rapidly wearing out what goodwill they had from many people. This will only HELP Trump, not black lives. Go ahead, make enemies of everyone not sufficiently pure of heart. Let's see where that gets you.

It won't be where you want to be,that's for damned sure.

I'm really glad that massive corporations are willing to stand up to these racist ------.

It shows that you don't have to be a sociopath intent on exploiting others to be a successful Capitalist.

I'm kinda impressed with how Nike plays both sides though. That's some effective branding right there.

And then there was Shaq shilling for Papa John's. How big was that paycheck?

WTF?

It's one company, deciding not to continue doing business with another company, after they took their product into the culture wars.

It's not a big deal, it's like when you go to Taco Bell and they don't have Coke they have Pepsi and then you get the Baja Blast anyway.

You must eat tons of this cheese from Costco to even care.

Costco ups its image again and I applaud them. Maybe some of the employees from this putz's company will form their own competing brand and they'll have Costco as a buyer.

Maybe Putz will learn to not watch Trump TV.

It's all so thought police. No hearts and minds are going to be won by this. This is just vindictive and self defeating. Hardening positions unnecessarily and creating an us and them mentality that will defeat the whole point of BLM. Is BLM about attaining justice,or controlling thoughts and the level of acceptable discourse by force? If the latter I hope they fail. We don't need thought police. America is a land of free expression. ANY group that seems to limit that is not helping, they are a force for repression. The cause is worthy. The means are Obscenely short sighted and counterproductive.

It's called having standards.

Then again, your standards were such that you voted for Trump, so maybe the problem is that your standards are way off.

Vote for Trump if you're mad at Costco.

In summary you blamed the anti-racists for being anti-racist instead of blaming the person who made a racist comment for making a racist comment. Did I read that right?
And no, he didn't apologize. He made a statement that sounds like an apology but instead places blame on those he upset for getting upset.

I just hate repression,of any kind. No I won't vote Trump. But I do see a kind of orthodoxy here that I find intolerant and extreme. The Nazis boycotted jews. BDS is illegal In Like half the states, because it sanctions Israel for ------- murder. But this guy mouthed off once in a stupid way that he apologized for and you're ready to go all kristallnacht on his business.

It just seems like disproportionately harsh sanction to me.

#23 - That's a fair statement of what you feel, Effete.

For me, and I watched the video again, he didn't apologize for what he said. It was an apology of deflection and diversion.
It was more an apology based on "oh ----! I better do something to save my business and so I don't look like a racist to the people that work for me, instead of a moron that gets my worldview from watching TrumpTV!" I think it was the end that kind of killed the "apology" part of it for me.

Had he actually apologized for what he said, had cited what was offensive, I'd be inclined to support your view.

But I do count his apology as a move in the right direction.

I remain solidly in Costco's camp at this time.

I've been eating pimento cheese sandwiches all my life... never did I imagine such a thing as premade pimento cheese...in a tub...like cheap margarine... I mean ew... that's worse than a vat of store-bought potato salad.

That being said I haven't had a Costco/Sams/BJ's or whatever big box store card in almost two decades. I am still working on this restaurant-sized roll of cling wrap I bought 18 years ago and I finally reached the end of this box of #10 envelopes I bought in 94... they've yellowed.

#26 I didn't know about it. That was -------- too. The only boycott I support is BDS because the Israelis are oppressing and murdering people in cold blood. Even that boycott I have mixed feelings about. I don't support sanctions against Iran, Venezuela,or really just about anyone. The Israelis are a special case. Because of the unique bloodlust and sanctimony they show.

And I was surprised to see they have three recruiting centers within 4.5 miles of my house.

People usually boycott something because they feel like that something is behaving in a manner that's oppressive, discriminatory or intolerant. In order to hurt a company, to force them to change.

When you said you never have boycotted anything. I said you're privileged. Because you must never have had an experience where you felt compelled to boycott.

Anyway. It doesn't matter.
