More than H.I.V. More than dysentery. More than malaria, influenza, cholera and measles - combined. In the 10 months since a mysterious pneumonia began striking residents of Wuhan, China, Covid-19 has killed more than one million people worldwide as of Monday " an agonizing toll compiled from official counts, yet one that far understates how many have really died. It may already have overtaken tuberculosis and hepatitis as the world's deadliest infectious disease, and unlike all the other contenders, it is still growing fast.

More than a million people " parents, children, siblings, friends, neighbors, colleagues, teachers, classmates " all gone, suddenly, prematurely. Those who survive Covid-19 are laid low for weeks or even months before recovering, and many have lingering ill effects whose severity and duration remain unclear.

Yet much of the suffering could have been avoided - one of the most heartbreaking aspects of all.

One million plus people dead over 8+ months from one viral pathogen.

COVID-19 is not your father's flu after all no matter what you may have been told. And it's nowhere close to being done with us defenseless (and often senseless) human beings.

Don't worry about it. It will just go away. We will wake up one day and it would have just disappeared.

We will wake up one day and it would have just disappeared.

What's truly sad is that one day, when a vaccine has finally been adequately circulated but a million Americans are dead, Trumpers will actually claim he was right.

That's 20% of the deaths with 4% of the world's population. Somehow that is supposed to equal an A+ response. Is human intelligence devolving?

You're cute.

What if there is no vaccine?

And even with the flu, for which there is a vaccine, it still infects and estimated 35 million Americans each year, resulting in hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths.

I feel like you think you can hunker down and wait this one out. I hope you're right.

"and tens of thousands of deaths."

31,000, on average.

In 6.5 months, Covid has killed over 205,000. By the 12 month mark, we will have had over a decade's worth of "flu deaths" from Covid.
