Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Frank Bruni - [A]fter Tuesday night's horror show: a disgrace to the format, an insult to the country, a nearly pointless 90 minutes - and, I should add, a degradation of the presidency itself, which Trump had degraded so thoroughly already - (h)e put on a performance so contemptuous, so puerile, so dishonest and so across-the-board repellent that the moderator, Chris Wallace, morphed into some amalgam of elementary-school principal, child psychologist, traffic cop and roadkill.

Trump runs roughshod over everyone and everything, and on Tuesday night in Cleveland he ran roughshod over the idea that two presidential candidates presenting rival visions for America should do so with at least a small measure of dignity and an iota of decorum.

Almost from the start, he talked over Biden, taunting him, demeaning him, trying to provoke him. He interrupted him and interrupted him and then interrupted him some more, all the while complaining that he, Trump, ever the martyr, was being persecuted once again.

He plumbed uncharted presidential-debate depths of nastiness. When Biden, objecting to Trump's reported dismissal of people who serve in the military as "losers," brought up his son Beau's tour of duty in Iraq, Trump brought up the past cocaine use of Biden's other son, Hunter. And looked impressed and delighted with himself for doing so.

What the world witnessed last night was nothing but a quasi-sexual assault upon Lady Liberty and the very strictures that used to define and separate the American experience from most all others. Trump saw the proud history of American presidential debate, unzipped his ill-fitting outsized trousers, and figuratively pulled out his mushroomed stubby and proceeded to spew his release for 90 minutes that will never be forgotten for its abject abhorrence and outrageous malevolence.

Trump is enraged to be opposed. Biden opposes him. I wouldn't do another debate with Trump, Mr. Biden. Trump may Dan White you.

" I wouldn't do another debate with Trump"

A few weeks back I would have disagreed but now that the world has seen how he'll behave I think Biden can probably back out arguing that yesterday proves how pointless it is. However, that would probably be used as justification for Trump to cancel the VP debates which I believe still have some potential value.

Biden's team is showing no signs of pulling out of the next two debates. But nothing is stopping them from making such an announcement if/when the debate commission is unable to codify better rules and then waiting until after the VP debate next week.

America doesn't deserve another crap show like last night's. It plays right into Russia's narrative about American democracy being dysfunctional and an obsolete dinosaur, unworkable in today's realpolitik world.

Give Pence some credit. He's been subjected to Trump for 4 years and he isn't as dumb as he looks - he's just really slimy.

If you want to see what a Presidential debate is supposed to look like watch Bill Clinton debate Bob Dole.

Trump basically implemented the debate tactic (if you can even call it that) that Sarah Palin implemented: Don't answer the moderator's question, just spout the talking points.

And one third of America liked it.

If we close our eyes we can pretend they are the actual presidential debate... considering how real that possibility is.

We need someone with the nuggets to declare an upper age limit for the office.

Someone who potentially has decades to live... Trumpibunkerboi is an old man... close to death... he can scorch the earth for all the difference it will make to him because like always... he doesn't have to live with the consequences.
