U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, D-5, was greeted with racial epithets and "derogatory music" during a campaign event for Newtown [Connecticut] held over Zoom.

At least one of the participants flooded the chat with a racial epithet and told Hayes, who is Black, to "shut up" and "pick your cotton."

Another participant simply repeated "Trump 2020," according to screenshots of the group chat shared by the Hayes' campaign Twitter account around 7 p.m. Monday.

Hayes, a Democrat and former teacher who was elected to represent the state's 5th Congressional District in 2018, apologized to Newtown residents for the incident.
