Dr. Ali Vaziri says he was charged for a $4,280 software upgrade for his Tesla on Sept. 24 without even being aware of opening the app, and has had trouble getting a refund. Other Tesla users have reported similar problems since January 2020.

I am not sure whether to laugh or express sympathy.

First of all, do I need to install an app on my phone in order to drive my car? Is that a Tesla thing? What is Tesla doing with all the data it slurps from my phone? Why does Tesla care if I go to Dr. Mikes for an ice cream cone?

Second of all, if I do install such an app on my phone, why, oh why, does that app apparently make it so easy to change how my car works? Apparently without notifying me.

It's a profit center for Tesla. Let your cars order anything they want. If some human disagrees, tough.
