The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued a full approval of the antiviral drug remdesivir for treating COVID-19 -- just days after a massive global study concluded that the drug provides no benefit.

..."The FDA is committed to expediting the development and availability of COVID-19 treatments during this unprecedented public health emergency," FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said in a statement. "Today's approval is supported by data from multiple clinical trials that the agency has rigorously assessed and represents an important scientific milestone in the COVID-19 pandemic."
Early results

The FDA made its decision based on three clinical trials on remdesivir, a repurposed experimental antiviral drug brand-named Veklury. One was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial run by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. It included 1,062 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, 541 of which received remdesivir. The trial concluded that remdesivir shortened the median recovery time from the infection from 15 days to 10 days. The researchers running the trial defined "recovery" of a patient as either a patient being discharged from the hospital"regardless if the patient still had lingering symptoms that limited activities or required supplemental oxygen to be taken at home"or a patient remaining in the hospital but no longer requiring medical care, such as if they were kept in the hospital for infection-control reasons.

The other two trials the FDA considered were conducted by Gilead, the company that makes remdesivir. ...

This is what happens when you allow a corrupt president to install incompetent loyalist cronies in the civil service.

Another view...

The FDA approved remdesivir to treat Covid-19. Scientists are questioning the evidence.

..."I think it's really inappropriate to give this a full approval because the data don't support it," said Eric Topol, a professor of molecular medicine at the Scripps Research Translational Institute. "What [the FDA] should have done instead of issuing the approval was put on the brakes."

Absent a vaccine, doctors are desperate for an effective treatment for Covid-19, and the FDA's approval of remdesivir finally gives them an option. In the United States, Covid-19 case counts are rising again, with states like Wisconsin opening field hospitals to deal with a looming surge.

But the approval of remdesivir has raised concerns, not only because of the results of the WHO's trial but also because it follows a number of questionable FDA authorizations for other Covid-19 therapies that appear to have been influenced by political pressure from the White House.

Now some researchers and doctors are concerned that remdesivir could not only be less effective than promised, but that its approval could also undermine other efforts to develop better Covid-19 therapies....

@#4 ... Would they give it to the President if it wasn't any good for the covid? ...

At the time they gave it to him, the FDA had not yet given it the full approval, it was still experimental.

At the time they said they gave it to him, it seems sufficient data were not yet available regarding its efficacy.

A subsequent trial showed its effectiveness to be minimal, at best.

So what do you think the answer to your question would be? And what might be the basis for that answer?

Trump medicine, the man is a polymath. Is there nothing he can't do? The FDA just toads approval for a worthless drug because Trump gives it the thumbs up,it's like he's a scientist,an entrepreneur, and a great leader all in one.

We're so lucky to have a phenomenon like him.

He's has ALL the answers,to everything, almost like God himself.

Praise Trump.

Oh poor confused uncle Fester.

The fake news is coming from the White House.

I have lost count but so far Trumpy has spewed over 20000 lies to the American people. Many of them about a deadly virus that has killed over 225,000 Americans so far.

The greatest source of misinformation and fake news is by far Donald j Trump.

Actually, yes. I heard several public health experts lament the fact that his doctors pumped Dotard full of a bunch of different medications some of which appeared to counteract each other. They said this was an example of how doctors get captured by rich and powerful patients who then demand and get whatever treatments they want despite their efficacy. Early on, he was on an immune suppressant while at the same time receiving convalescent plasma, which is intended to boost immune response.

Hmmmm...There was another leader who was pumped full of an odd mixture of drugs before he was defeated. Committed suicide actually. 1945...I think.

The similarities are astonishing.

Except that long ago leader may have actually cared about his country at some point.

And served in it's armed forces.

Sorry, the comparison is all wrong.

tRumpy is actually worse, and will prove it, given the opportunity.

They weren't experimenting, but he demanded to be given meds that the FDA had yet to approve or were still in the trial phase. Certainly the average COVID patient isn't getting convalescent plasma or until last week, Remdesivir, which the WHO as part of a large study reports that it does not help as a treatment for COVID.

Also, not one of Dotard's doctors was a virologist, nor had any of them previously treated COVID.

"he demanded to be given meds that the FDA had yet to approve or were still in the trial phase."

My SIL just retired after leading a major University's pathology program for the last two decades. Regarding Trump's treatment, her response was "I want monoclonal antibodies on my first day of Covid, too!"

@!2 ... So basically they were experimenting on the POTUS? ...

Basically, I'd say, yes.

They were using an experimental treatment on POTUS.

Given that Pres Trump has encouraged the use of, I'll proffer, crazy treatments from a spiritual advisor espousing alien impregnation, what would you expect from him?

Really, what would you expect?

Do you see sanity in Pres Trump?

If so, please elucidate.

thx.

Of course not. Every treatment he received has some level of human data out there because they're all in clinical trials at some level.

What's odd is that none of them have completed the trials for a formal analysis and report for review, something that your average person is extremely extremely unlikely to receive.

Putin comes out and says they are close to a vaccine and Dems use it to bash Trump saying other countries are so much better than us, yet Putin's process is ridiculously absurd to most world-wide scientific bodies. So, why would this now be a problem when it's something that is more relatable to the US? Oh, right, Dems want America to fail so they will point out any misleading information they can to ensure that happens.

What's not so odd is the drugs Trump was given knocked the covid out in no time flat.
But you don't believe he even had the rona in spite of what the doctors said.
Because fake news.

Trumpy got treatment that was probably in the millions of dollars. For $750. Are you advocating for the same level of treatment for all Americans? I wish my healthcare only cost $750 and I had access to the Superman cocktail if I needed it. And. How do you know what Trumpy had? How would you know what he had and what worked and what didn't?

His doctors were forced to sign an NDA and because they are professionals they don't lie as well as Trumpy and could not sustain Trumpy's lies and got caught actually lying.

But don't worry. We will find out the truth. Eventually. If we live.

Trump was treated with an experimental cocktail reserved for critical cases. It wasn't a "cure."

As I recall, the cocktail only temporarily prevented the virus from attaching to healthy cells. It's effectiveness was believed to be only 4 months and sometimes less. It was the steroids that made Trump feel like Superman. He's probably still taking them to get through the campaign.

IF Trump actually contacted COVID-19 and IF this whole thing wasn't one of his melodramas to disprove the lethality of the virus, then he's going to be back in the hospital sometime in December or early January.

His age, obesity and other underlying health problems are his worst enemy. Since this virus is known to be lethal, especially under those circumstances, he could even die or be hospitalized in a vegetative state.
