...The attack drew considerable concern because it's the first known time hackers have used malware designed to cause death or injury, a prospect that may have actually happened had it not been for a lucky series of events.

The hackers -- who have been linked to a Moscow-based research lab owned by the Russian government -- have also targeted a second facility and been caught scanning US power grids.

Now the Treasury Department is sanctioning the group, which is known as the State Research Center of the Russian Federation FGUP Central Scientific Research Institute of Chemistry and Mechanics or its Russian abbreviation TsNIIKhM. Under a provision in the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, or CAATSA, the US is designating the center for "knowingly engaging in significant activities undermining cybersecurity against any person, including a democratic institution, or government on behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation."
Dangerous cyber activities

"The Russian Government continues to engage in dangerous cyber activities aimed at the United States and our allies," said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin, in a release published on Friday. "This Administration will continue to aggressively defend the critical infrastructure of the United States from anyone attempting to disrupt it."...

If that keeps up, Trump might even bring up bounties. That'll teach Putin. Though I'm sure Susan Collins believes Vlad has learned his lesson.

... "This Administration will continue to aggressively defend the critical infrastructure of the United States from anyone attempting to disrupt it." ...

So long as said defense of critical infrastructure does not involve defending against Russia's attempts to re-elect Pres Trump. Then Pres Trump welcomes, even encourages, such attempts.

"But it could also be China. It could also be lots of other people. It also could be somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds, okay?"

@#4 ... But it could also be China. ...

Yes, it could.

I run a webserver for a few informational sites. I used to run a discussion forum, but, wow, it became a mess. [I summarize here.] (if you think politics is rough, try running a discussion forum about investing in stocks. An email from the SEC is not an happy event in one's life...) btw, major kudos to RCade for hanging in there with this august forum. I know I give him grief about formatting, but I do realize and understand what he is up against in trying to provide what is here. Been there, done that. Didn't like it.

Late last year week I used the APNIC repository to gather and ban all IP addresses originating in China from accessing my websites.

It was nothing personal.

But the overwhelming majority of the accesses to my websites from China were malware probes.

China is not an innocent here.

But, let's not lose focus on the problem....

;)
