Utah hospitals could be days away from using a patient's age, health and other factors to decide who can remain in overcrowded intensive care units due to an onslaught of Covid-19 cases.

To triage care, the proposal would take into account a patient's age, health, situation and ability to survive, Bell told CNN affiliate KUTV on Sunday night.

"At the end of the day, some senior person, versus some healthy young person, probably would not get the nod," Bell said...

"We've seen, in the past couple of weeks, that our health care system is at capacity," state epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn said.
"I don't know what to do anymore," she said. "I'm really not trying to scare anyone. I'm just trying to inform you of what's going on and give you the facts."

And we're not even to the traditional start of influenza season yet.

Buckle up, kids, it's going to be an awful, awful ride.

Since Rs don't wear masks and don't think the coronavirus is a big deal just send all of them home.

Old Testament God does seem like a real dick.

There's always the Ghengis Khan approach. "I am the flail of god". He's not talking about his god. He's talking about yours. Yours doesn't like you it's your gods will that he's here.

I like the third option.

God doesn't exist and we stupid humans are just -------- using the concept of God to rationalize our behaviors.

Where are they going to send the sick elderly patients who are deemed expendable? Back home? What if they live alone or with an elderly vulnerable spouse? To a nursing home?

I'm asking because it took my friend's 101 year old mother 2 weeks in the hospital after she was diagnosed but before she died. (She was in an assisted living center when she got covid.)

It's my understanding everyone (everyone who is NOT the President)is sent "home" until you're in a critical condition. By which time it can be too late for some. Many Americans are dying at right at home from the Typhoid Trumpy flu.

So someone in a nursing home or assistant living center will basically have to stay there till they die?

That what nursing homes have always been for, right?

To get someone else to take care of our parents, since we're too busy working.

Thanks, Capitalism!

El Paso imposes curfew as virus cases overwhelm hospitals: "We are in a crisis stage"
www.cbsnews.com

North Dakota reports 205 COVID deaths in October, by far the deadliest month
www.grandforksherald.com

...The situation is especially urgent in Bismarck, where the two hospitals have just one available ICU bed and six inpatient beds between them. Grand Forks has just one ICU bed and 15 inpatient beds, while Dickinson has two ICU beds and seven inpatient beds, and Minot has three ICU beds and 16 inpatient beds....

Critical juncture': [Gov] Little moves Idaho back to Stage 3 amid sustained COVID-19 surge
www.idahostatesman.com

...Idaho's hospitalization rate has increased, as the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare last reported that 259 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized. The uptick has strained hospital resources throughout the state, especially in the Magic Valley and Eastern Idaho. ...

"Hospitals throughout the state are quickly filling up or are already full with COVID-19 patients and other patients, and way too many health care workers are out sick with COVID-19," Little said. ...

"We are in a battle with COVID-19 and we cannot surrender to this virus," Wilper said. "In Idaho we must recognize that our actions or lack of action will result in the infection and death of our countrymen. ...

[emphasis mine]

... we cannot surrender to this virus ...

Unfortunately for the United States, Pres Trump has not only surrendered to the enemy virus, he has joined forces with the enemy virus to kill Americans, and has been prompting his supporters to following him down that path.

It gets complicated. Because if there are no available icu beds there is no place to move them to. Everything and everyone has to be ppe protected during the process. This is exactly why Cuomo got into trouble.

And this is why we need a federally coordinated plan.

So everyone knows what to do all across the board and we are all on the same sheet of music.

Would we ever allow each state to decide how to defend America from an attack from a hostile invader in any way each state pleased?

I don't think so.

Covid-19 Hospitalizations Leap in Most States, With Cases Rising
www.bloomberg.com

...Covid-19 hospitalizations have risen at least 10% in the past week in 32 states and the nation's capital as the month-old viral surge increasingly weighs on America's health-care system.

Current hospitalizations soared 68% in New Mexico, 50% in Wyoming and 38% in Connecticut, among other notable increases, according to Covid Tracking Project data. South Dakota, Montana and North Dakota have the most current patients per capita, the data show.
Covid-19 Hospitalizations Are Rising

Nationally, current hospitalizations with Covid-19 have climbed 37% to 42,917 in the past three weeks, after months of decline. But they are still about 28% lower than they were during July's Sun Belt surge, even as cases have risen to a record.

About 6% of America's inpatient beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Coronavirus patients are taking up 10% or more of beds in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin....

If they're lucky? To an overflow/field facility where they'll get some level of basic care from a professional being pushed into service in said facilities.

When those fill up? They go wherever they can/want. All the hospital says is "can't stay here."

I suspect we'll start hearing a lot more stories about people found dead in their homes. Loners or the poor who can't afford or get to a hospital before it's too late.

Why North and South Dakota are suffering the worst Covid-19 epidemics in the US
www.vox.com

...The third surge of Covid-19 cases is leading to worsening outbreaks across the United States. But two states -- North Dakota and South Dakota -- have coronavirus outbreaks that far surpass the rest of America.

While the Dakotas managed to avoid big outbreaks during the spring and for most of the summer, the current situation suggests that was more an element of luck and timing than anything else. With the coronavirus, it often seems like a matter of time before it hits your area to some extent. And if a country or state doesn't have the proper precautions in place " and the Dakotas didn't " the virus can and likely will spread through its population. It's a lesson in the need for constant, continued vigilance.

North and South Dakota now have four to five times the weekly average for daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 people. ...

Greater testing capacity doesn't fully explain the spikes in Covid-19 cases in either state. In North Dakota, the seven-day testing average actually fell by nearly 2 percent over the last week as the number of cases increased by more than 14 percent. In South Dakota, the testing average went up by 11 percent as cases increased by 20 percent over the previous week.

Both states have also seen their hospitalizations and deaths increase since September. North and South Dakota report the highest and second-highest, respectively, Covid-19 death rate over the previous week out of all states, Washington, DC, and US territories....
