Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, November 04, 2020

Democrats, look in the mirror and show a little humility. You're not nearly as self-evidently wonderful or widely loved as you'd like to believe. You are not destined to prevail anywhere. You share a country with a large group of people who hate your guts, and who aren't going to submit to your rule or go along with your giddy plans to remake the nation in your image. It's time to start acting like you understand this implacable fact and all it implies about the limits of your power and the parameters of the possible. American politics is a war of attrition right now. The sooner Democrats learn to live with that fact, the better.

meh.... it's turning to be more like 2016 in reverse with more voters on both sides, not a 2018 Blue Wave redux.

The idea that the campaign is a failure if it doesn't have yuge coattails is lame.

Bozo, your belligerent nonsense is tiresome. The left is the future. The old repressive "good old days" are the past and the past is dead. You deadenders are a dying breed. You won't be missed. Any more than the old south is.

The arch of progress is slow and never contiguous.

But people do learn over time.

"a large group of people who hate your guts"

When has that ever been the formula for good governance?

"the left got crushed"

By more electoral votes and popular votes than the Republicans got.

In related news, the 49ers "crushed" the Kansas City Chiefs in last year's Super Bowl...if you just ignore the outcome.

So now we're back to this, where the Pubs act like the Dems are just as evil and dishonest as they are. Just because your side constantly rules in bad faith doesn't mean everyone else does.
There are many valid reasons to hate Trump and his style, now you're going to make up tons of reasons to hate Biden.

It's clear you don't see Trumpism as either being fascistic or a disease.

Scores of millions of Americans went to the polls and did not vote for Hitler.

Scores of millions with little to no sign of discernable values did.

If this is a "war of attrition", does the Right even understand what attrition means?

You've been cheating to stay in power for years now because you're in the process of being attrited.

Yeah, I understand that the Right "hates my guts". When you grow up around rednecks you understand that hating is their state of being.

#15 | Posted by Zed at 2020-11-05 07:35 AM | Reply

The Right has dealt with the issue of Donald Trump's moral turpitude, corruption, and outright criminality by embracing it and holding it dear.

They deal with people pointing out that's what they do by ignoring it

Like you do.

#16 | Posted by Zed at 2020-11-05 07:37 AM | Reply

So, what have I figured out about the "Right", BOAZ? As if that were anything else except Trumpism.

That the Right loves punks. That they want to be punks themselves, as big as the punks they admire.

There's nothing too terribly complicated about it.

How did they get that way? Well, let's start with this: Millions of the may attend Christian churches but millions of them do it out of habit, out of material advantage, and because they're afraid their Trumpite neighbor will leave ---- on their porch if hey don't.

#17 | Posted by Zed at 2020-11-05 07:43 AM | Reply

It's interesting that you people actually live through these things without understanding them.

I don't expect my more rationalistic friends on the DR to understand this, but this is what many of us have seen and understood.

Trump is demonized because he is demonic. I'm speaking right-up Evangelistic Baptist at this moment. His followers are demonized because they follow and enable a demon. By his fruits and by theirs they are known.

Trump is the Boogey-man because it got him votes and power. Some people just enjoy the smell of sulfur.

The author isn't talking about Liberals. He's talking about the Democratic Party. And if you care about the Democratic Party, you should pay attention.

Trump took Michigan and Wisconsin in 2016 for the first time in more years than I prefer to go an look up. Traditionally, non-college educated blue collar workers have supported Democratic candidates. So why did they break for Trump in 2016? I would submit that it is related to the growth of the far left-wing wing of the Dem party, that places identity politics and lofty ideological goals over the needs or concerns of normal people. You really can't deny that the New York City activist professor who identifies as a trans person and supports the GND has much in common with an oil worker in Pennsylvania. Ans that's a problem for the Democratic party, because those non-college educated blue collar workers can always vote republican if the Dems choose to indulge the whims of the far left members of their party. At the same time, the far left has no one else to support in any meaningful way, other than the Democrats.

The far left doesn't see much of a difference between Dems and Repubs. Kate Brown and Ted Wheeler have repeatedly been the targets of left-wing activists in Portland, despite the fact that Brown is one of the most progressive governors in the country.

For the committed left, a social democrat is still nothing more than a capitalist, and it's capitalism that's the problem.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood your point, which appears to be that strategic industries should be under state control, while everything else shouldn't.

First, that's still 100% capitalist. Second, even if the state did maintain control of strategic industries, you would still want to run them in the same way you would run a private enterprise. France owns a decent stake in Air France-KLM group, but they don't (to my knowledge) attempt to manipulate day to day operations.

"Trump may be gone. But under the coming circumstances, the left is not likely to make any serious progress."

The Dems are ultimately going to have to choose whether they vie for the support of the left, or vie for the support of the middle. The rust belt seems like it should be an easy kill for the Dems, but the policies being pushed by the left cannot be reconciled with many blue collar workers. Which means they'll vote Republican.

I think they would have this time, ad the republican candidate not been Trump.

I don't see the left making any meaningful national gains. Maybe keeping ACA. But certainly no GND. No universal healthcare. No elimination of billionaires.
