Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, November 26, 2020

The Supreme Court has barred New York from enforcing limits on attendance at churches and synagogues in areas hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a 5-4 opinion with Chief Justice John Roberts in the minority along with the court's three liberals, the court ruled, "Members of this Court are not public health experts, and we should respect the judgment of those with special expertise and responsibility in this area. But even in a pandemic, the Constitution cannot be put away and forgotten. The restrictions at issue here, by effectively barring many from attending religious services, strike at the very heart of the First Amendment's guarantee of religious liberty."

An update with comments from Cuomo on why this is irrelevant because the "red zone" these churches and synagogues were in are no longer "red" because of what NY has done.

What is it you think he prayed for?
Was it ending systemic racism?
Was it ending climate change?
Or was it just... ending Alzheimer's?

Joe Biden: (15:02)
America is dream big. As hard as it may seem this Thanksgiving, we're going to dream big again. Our future is bright. In fact, I've never been more optimistic about the future America than I am right now. I honest to God, believe that 21st century is going to be an American century. We're going to build an economy that leads the world. We're going to lead the world by the power of our example, not just the example of our power. We're going to lead the world on climate and save this planet. We're going to find cures for cancer and Alzheimer's and diabetes. I promise you. We're going to finally root out systemic racism in this country. I miss Thanksgiving and anticipation of all the Thanksgivings that come. Let's dream again. Let's commit ourselves to thinking not only of ourselves, but of others as well. For if we care for one another, if we open our arms rather than brandishing our fist, we can with the help of God heal.

Joe Biden: (16:18)
And if we do, and I'm sure we can, we can claim the promised. With the promise who wrote these following words. The Lord is my strength and my shield, and with my song I give thanks to him. I give thanks now for you, for the trust you've placed in me. Together, we'll lift our voices in the coming months and years. And our songs shall be of lives saved, bridges repaired, a nation made whole again. Folks from the Biden family to yours, wherever and however, you may be celebrated. We wish you a happy Thanksgiving. May God bless you and may God protect our troops. Happy Thanksgiving..

Just once and for all I've love to hear Liberals admit they are trying to take away freedoms from the people. They won't do it. Even though that is exactly what is in headlines daily. Whether or not it is good or bad is irrelevant to the initial dialogue. First they have to admit that they want to infringe on peoples' rights. Only then can they start making a case of why that is important to do and how they are going to do it in a way that doesn't give the government power to continue taking away freedoms once this is all over with. Instead, Liberals just continue to use name-calling as their basis for their decisions because people don't agree with their methods. And, as we all know, Liberals want to remove everyone who doesn't have their same opinions from the country.

They're like any faith-over-reality nutcases we have to deal with. Their belief, no matter how stupid, how counter-factual, overrides reality. Until it doesn't.
Then they'll lay in their beds dying, like Trumpers, denying it's coronavirus.

Until then we get to live with them spreading disease, especially when we have something like "trump" "leading" and setting the tone, and appointing faith over reality "justices" to the Supreme Court of the United States.

Reality is your individual rights don't end in a pandemic. Even Typhoid Mary got due process before being quarantined.

Beyond that, if leaders like Cuomo want their restrictions respected then they have to enforce them. They do not, it's has been and continues to be arbitrary.

I cannot see any downside to this, except that children, always innocent while they live with their parents, will suffer along with their parent! Jeebus himself, strongly suggested people pray alone and silently, certainly in small groups of two or three, and definitely not in megachurch throngs!

Look it up! Matthew 6:5-6:15 spells it out plainly, likely in red text to highlight Jeebus' actual words.

So what is the point of lock-downs? The virus is here. It doesn't appear to be going anywhere. At some point we're going to need to face the fact that reality is what it is.

After nearly a year of COVID-19 news and statistics, you are asking this question?

Somehow, it seems you consider any effort which does not yield immediate results is somehow flawed. With the possible exception of the burning of London in 1666, what technique of halting the spread of a deadly plague (i.e., bubonic plague) has ever yield rapid results?

Currently, the human species is enjoying the opportunity to observe the results of shared knowledge as different countries deal with this virus in different ways. Given your continuing willful avoidance of that knowledge (both immediate and education in biological systems), it's becoming increasingly apparent why it's possible for the US to be still struggling with this virus. American exceptionalism at its worst.

So what is the point of lock-downs?

Originally it was to contain the spread of the virus.

But, people believe their rights are more important than acting responsibly to protect society.

So that failed.

Now the point of quarantining is to keep more people from getting infected until a vaccine is available.

I fault trump and trumpism for all those things and the trumpy virus too.

Trump owns those deaths as much as he owns a 30,000 Dow. But he only took responsibility for one of those things.

Trump failed in his basic duty as President to provide for a common defense for Americans against an attack by a foreign enemy.

Because Trumpy could not see this enemy he pretended it did not exist.

Until it was too late to stop it.

Fortunately we have stopped him in his relentless pursuit of power. So we can finally stop the hemorrhaging.

But we are well into a pandemic that is completely out of control now that could have been at least managed if not stopped . And turning it around now will take a long time and a lot of work and a lot of money.

The Luftwaffe did not navigate by house lights, and the UK government knew it. That's like telling people wear waders to stop covid. People need to stop using this as a talking point, it means the exact opposite. It's a right wing fear, a government ordering people something they know has no effect to make them more compliant down the road.

Let's review:

Blackout regulations were imposed on 1 September 1939, before the declaration of war. These required that all windows and doors should be covered at night with suitable material such as heavy curtains, cardboard or paint, to prevent the escape of any glimmer of light that might aid enemy aircraft. The Government ensured that the necessary materials were available. en.wikipedia.org(wartime)

Our government did not ensure that necessary materials -- masks -- were available.
In fact, our government shot down the USPS plan to send masks to every household in America.

And then there's this:

Along the Atlantic coast, the lack of a coastal blackout served to silhouette Allied shipping and thus expose them to German submarine attack. Coastal communities resisted the imposition of a blackout for amenity reasons, citing potential damage to tourism. The result was a disastrous loss of shipping, dubbed by German submariners as the "Second Happy Time"

To Sitzkrieg's point, from the above wikipedia article:

M. R. D. Foot argues that blackouts did not impair navigation by bombers because navigators focused more on reflective bodies of water, railroad tracks, or large highways.

The real lessons of the Blitz for Covid-19
03 April 2020
www.historyandpolicy.org

Executive Summary
The Second World War has frequently been invoked in commentary on Covid-19. The analogy is not always helpful, but we can take lessons from how the wartime government managed Air Raid Precautions and post-raid services.
Air Raid Precautions (ARP) were well advanced by the time war was declared, but it is not too late for the government's response to Covid-19 to catch up.
The blackout provides the closest analogy to social distancing. Its success demonstrates that the government needs to communicate clearly the link between people's behaviour and the national interest, using sanctions consistently.
Volunteers were mobilised in large numbers during the Second World War, but were often poorly coordinated and equipped. Current schemes need to foster local networks and communication between volunteers, while existing pools of labour should be redeployed to essential tasks.
The wartime government was slow to pivot when its pre-war forecasts proved wrong, causing serious problems for hospital provision and post-raid relief. There are obvious lessons here for an emergency that changes by the hour not the day.
Local authorities carried many of the burdens of ARP and post-raid services, but were not given adequate funding to fulfil them consistently. Today's government must avoid this mistake.
The fire service was completely re-organised when its role on the front line became apparent " today's crisis is already showing signs of flexible thinking, but we argue that this needs to go further and must involve representative bodies.

Basic Air Nav. You don't use house lights that may or may not be on.

As far as Coastal, only the stupid captains. The Wolfpack's were in the air gap, and the seas too rough for carrier ops of the day.

Regarding my post where I commented about the court supporting Freedom of Religion.

After rethinking it, I am more inclined to say the court enforced Separation of Church and State.

The way I see it the government can not make laws that suppress a religion.

The court ruled that since NY was allowing large group gatherings that were in reality not essential but disallowing religious gatherings larger than 25, NY was out of line.

Or the way I see it, suppressing religious gatherings.

If NY hadn't been allowing other large groups that were not essential, then perhaps the courts might not have ruled this way.
