Newly Elected DAs Vow to Continue Reforms
This month's elections, especially in the aftermath of this summer's protests against racial injustice, were seen as a test for criminal justice reforms. This was especially true for so-called progressive district attorneys.

Some aspects of this trend I like, e.g. using health professionals instead of police in an appropriate manner.
Other aspects I have concerns about, e.g., reducing charges for shoplifters.
However, some elected officials needed to start the change, if for no other reason than to start the public discussion of where the change should go.

Shoplifting doesn't even get prosecuted any more, they just trespass you from the store. Much easier to prosecute trespass, no evidence is required.

Not true. It all "depends". My wife's employer prosecutes but it is also depending on how egregious the theft was. These organized Asian gangs that hit stores - guaranteed prosecution. Steal a candy bar - you are right probably trespass you from the store. But there is a lot of grey in between... They don't allow employees to try and intervene anymore either - thieves know it.
Strangely they rarely prosecute employees.

#3 Thanks for that. I was thinking more on the petty theft side of thing. People who put their old shoes in the shoebox and walk out of Sears with the new shoes on. Organized theft gangs get more attention.
