Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Erica Newland: In giving voice to those trying to destroy the rule of law and dignifying their efforts with our talents and even our basic competence, we enabled that destruction. Were we doing enough good elsewhere to counterbalance the harm we facilitated, the way a public health official might accommodate the president on the margins to push forward on vaccine development? No. No matter our intentions, we were complicit.

From the article...

...I never harbored delusions about a Trump presidency. Mr. Trump readily volunteered that his agenda was to disassemble our democracy,...
[emphasis mine]

She may be haunted by what she did, but our grandchildren will still be suffering from the harm she facilitated.

It sickens me when lawyers engage in unethical behavior and then believe that an after-the-fact mea culpa will make everything all better. In the end, it is always about protecting their own career and future. If she really wanted to demonstrate to her fellow attorneys that she regrets her behavior she would resign from the Bar for good. (Lead by example, not by writing self serving op-ed pieces.)

I guess this is her catharsis. What's disturbing is now long she knew "Mr. Trump readily volunteered that his agenda was to disassemble our democracy" without so much as a peep.

And worse yet, and even more complicit, if she knew it, so did Attorney General Barr.

More the pity that nothing will ever come of this. I hope they're all haunted for the rest of their lives . . . and beyond if there is one.

Barr especially is beneath contempt.

Easy to be honest and brave when the Devil is almost out the door. Try not to sell your soul to the next Devil, Counselor.

@#4 ... I guess this is her catharsis....

My feeling is that we will be seeing more of this over the coming months, as those who actively enabled and facilitated Pres Trump publicly rue their indefensible acts, hoping for forgiveness.

The problem I see with that is ... if Pres Trump had been re-elected, they'd still be in there actively enabling his egregious behavior.

Take his license to practice.

This is her trying to resuscitate her reputation. Notice when she wrote this, it wasn't before the election where it might have convinced one or two people to either vote for Biden or not vote at all instead of voting for Dotard. She's concerned that she won't be invited to the best cocktail parties, that she'll be shunned now that a Dem is in the WH. I'll bet her fear is that even if a Republican not named Drumpf is elected in 2024 that anybody who was willingly complicit with the Trumpublican anti-democracy agenda will continue to be blackballed. She's worried that her two-year stint in the Dotard OLC will forever be a stain on her reputation. She should put on her resume that she spent those two years in prison from a Ponzi scheme prosecution, it'll make her more employable.

LAMP

"if Pres Trump had been re-elected, they'd still be in there actively enabling his egregious behavior."

So would A.G. Barr.

How'd that "just following orders" schtick work out at Nuremberg?
