The US Capitol is on lockdown during a tense situation with demonstrators outside the building, according to Capitol police officers. Congress is currently in session to count and certify the Electoral College votes for president and vice president.

And what about the FBI and United States Marshall's Office?

Trump has the Greek Plutarch's admonition: E tan e epitas (Since we can't use foreign alphabets anymore). It translates from the Ancient Greek as Either with your shield, or on it. Signifying don't come back alive if you abandon your shield on the field of battle, else you must be carried on your shield dead, or don't bother coming home.

I'm confused, where is the tear gas, the rubber bullets, the flashbangs, the overhead buzzing by helicopters? Those guys grabbing the barricades should get a club to the head. If they were BLM protesters, who have been MUCH more peaceful, they would have gotten all of the above, plus the police lines would have moved forward to club down the protesters in the front row to create space. It's amazing to me to see how totally different LE treats dangerous white traitors to their country from young black, brown, and white protesters asking for racial justice.

DC only has 1,220 total officers. As high as 40% are administrative positions. To hold just the Capitol building, you're going to need at least 50% of the patrol force broken into 3 shifts, and you still have to provide normal police services to all of DC and push all of the normal paperwork. The logistics don't exist to make that happen.

Prediction: Today's insurrection is going to cement the end of the Republican Party as we've known it. One cannot serve two masters and it's obvious that Trump has placed himself above and beyond everyone else who doesn't obediently follow whatever he says.

I think we will see multiple Republicans leave the party and declare themselves independents in the wake of today's events. Many GOPers are openly calling for Trump's immediate impeachment as it is. January 6th will go down as a seminal day in this nation's history - either a needed reaffirmation that we are a peaceful republic or the day a mob insurrection riled up by a US President ended our 245 year experiment in democracy.

#202 | Posted by tonyroma at 2021-01-06 04:00 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

#182, Boaz, the flaw in your logic rests on your premise that this is a simple protest by people who hold a different point of view. The real premise is these people are storming the US government, armed, and creating a melee, and deserve to be taken control of by the authorities.

#203 | Posted by madscientist at 2021-01-06 04:00 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

This is not bigger than 9-11

You're missing my point. It's not that 9/11 or Pearl Harbor weren't big events that changed America.

It's that they happened 20 and 80 years ago.

I mean. The civil war was definite bigger than this. But I doubt anyone is thinking about the civil war, or the revolutionary war.

Hell. Covid kills more people a day than died in the attacks of 9/11 and Pearl Harbor.

But I'd say 9/11 and Pearl Harbor had bigger impacts on the history of our nation.

It's a matter of perspective.

Right now. Armed Trumpers attempting to overturn the will of the majority of Americans by rushing the capital building is a historic first (that I'm aware of) and a big deal.

#204 | Posted by ClownShack at 2021-01-06 04:01 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

By their fruits ye shall know them:

President Donald Trump on Tuesday didn't condemn white supremacist groups and their role in violence in some American cities this summer, branding it solely a "left-wing" problem and telling one far-right extremist group to "stand back and stand by."

It's funny how many of you wanted to defund and get rid of police,

You clearly don't understand what the end goal of "defund the police" was.

It wasn't to get rid of the police. It was to use the budget to fund different groups of people to go deal with some of the issues police deal with.

So instead of sending cops to deal with domestic violence, you send social workers.

Currently police budgets are so big they're buying military equipment. Why do cops needs military gear?

You shouldn't consider the discussion you're having with three different people as being one conversation.

Especially since I have been having a civil discussion with you. Perhaps you can respond accordingly.

You pondered if what's happening right now is bigger than 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.

I responded based on perspective and currently being in the moment. It is bigger than those events.

In ten years will it be? Who knows.

The 1918 Spanish flu was a huge deal, right? So many dead Americans.

But. I never knew about it, I never read about it, not one history book I read in school had anything about it.

Covid is huge right now. But will it be remembered in 2097?

I'm pretty sure Pearl Harbor and 9/11 will be.

Will today's actions by Trumpers? I don't know.

The civil war and the revolutionary wars will be.

The Korean War isn't studied much/at all in history classes. Will the Iraq invasion and the death if Saddam? The Syrian invasion? Libya and Qaddafi?

It's actually a good question and it touches on why this has touched nerves the way it has.

A lot of nasty things have been said about Trumpers. Racists, traitors, seditionists, etc...some pretty heavy stuff.

But I think a lot of people who use those terms didn't really believe all of them. It's easy to call someone you don't know a traitor on the internet.

Today, they now truly understand there is indeed a faction of Trumpers that are as dangerous as they were saying....but didn't necessarily believe it.

I think that is why this caught everyone with such surprise and why they believe this is the biggest event in 200 years.

It's not, of course and eventually they'll calm down and realize they were simply shocked over the behavior of these --------. They didn't think the -------- would go that far.

The creator of Dilbert was on Bill Maher in 2016 talking about it, he was highly convincing, which led me to believe Trump actually would win. And he did.

Now I fully believe the only reason he's able to be as enabled as he is by the people around him and his supporters is because he's manipulated their subconscious. His speech patterns have a lot to do with it, very Goebbels-esque.

This is the 9/11 of American democracy

I haven't read any "meltdowns." This is an event the likes of which we haven't seen in our history, called for by a sitting U.S. president who lost an election. And, who rather than calling for the mob's immediate dispersal, called these insurrectionists "special people" and told them he loved them.

This was committed with the complicity of over 120 elected Republican officials who swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, but instead committed sedition by refusing to respect the results of a free and fair election. And on the very day they were to uphold that oath by certifying the vote of the Electoral College.

Because you're an idiot with a poor grasp of history.

Major powers usually fall from within as attacks from without have a galvanizing effect.

This was an attack from within and the mindset and ideology that spurred it isn't going away after this specific incident is over. As we move forward with the transition and analysis of today the divisions that sparked it will only grow stronger.

Okay...you just showed me you do understand my motivations.

except the trolling part. Maybe I was trolling but not intentionally. I was interested in the subject matter and discussing it. Usually trolling is done by people uninterested in the subject matter but rather focuses on individuals to chase and waste time with.

This is completely unprecedented. That alone should give folks like EBERLY pause.

National Association of Manufacturers calls for 25th Amendment consideration

The National Association of Manufacturers, not typically considered a liberal group, is calling for Pence to "seriously consider" assembling the Cabinet to discuss invoking the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy.

"Armed violent protestors who support the baseless claim by outgoing president Trump that he somehow won an election that he overwhelmingly lost have stormed the U.S. Capitol today, attacking police officers and first responders, because Trump refused to accept defeat in a free and fair election. Throughout this whole disgusting episode, Trump has been cheered on by members of his own party, adding fuel to the distrust that has enflamed violent anger. This is not law and order. This is chaos. It is mob rule. It is dangerous. This is sedition and should be treated as such. The outgoing president incited violence in an attempt to retain power, and any elected leader defending him is violating their oath to the Constitution and rejecting democracy in favor of anarchy. Anyone indulging conspiracy theories to raise campaign dollars is complicit. Vice President Pence, who was evacuated from the Capitol, should seriously consider working with the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to preserve democracy.

When a crowd many times less the size of this one was in a park across the street from the WH, they were mobilized and ready to bash heads and fire tear gas.

Not only were Capitol police unprepared, some of them actually collaborated with the insurrectionists, opening gates to let them onto the Capitol grounds, taking selfies with them. They failed to defend the Capitol, failed to arrest those who broke into the building.

Had this been BLM, there'd have been bloody and battered insurrectionist bodies and tear gas all over the place.

Heads need to roll. The role of the Capitol police is to PROTECT THE CAPITOL and those inside of it. Those who didn't do their jobs need to be fired immediately.

Not really. They were warned. One congresswoman thought she might die today. She told her husband where her will was hidden because she thought she might even die today. Why would she think that? She knew something bad was going to happen today. Like a mass shooting or something.

They all knew those trumpers were coming. I knew they were coming. I thought about going myself to confront them! (Not that stupid yet) They even told you they were coming. They were even warned not to bring guns.

We're in a bit of a fog of war situation. But the statement from the acting Secretary of Defense said he had spoken to Pence and the Republican and Democratic congressional leadership about mobilizing the National Guard. But there was no mention of having talked to the President. Now the Times is reporting that it was Pence who gave the order for the deployment. Now, I guess great that he did that. But on what basis would the Vice President give that order? The Vice President isn't commander-in-chief. Is the President still President? Is he somehow even in the White House seen to be commanding the the insurrectionists, not functioning as President? That sounds hyperbolic. But again, what's the legal basis here?

My opinion is, as long as the protestors remain quiet, do not arrest them or force them off the street. Deescalate.

There will be plenty of time for arrests for those who breached the capital.

And, fwiw, my opinion is the assault on the capital is a major crime. This is the heart of our nation. I hate using religious terms, but the place IS sacred. Not just for what it is, but for what it represents. An attack on the capital IS an attack on the constitution, far more than burning a flag or attacking some other federal building. This is the place where the 13th amendment was passed, where the civil rights bill was passed, where the ACA was passed, where every law good and bad was passed, where our nation's soul is. The penalties must be equal to the crime.

At (MN)State Capitol, 500 Trump supporters decry certification, move toward governor's residence

They cheered and sang, and they talked about armed revolt. They posed for pictures and wore colonial-era costumes, and they laughed when they found out a mob breached the U.S. Capitol Building.

The roughly 500 supporters of President Donald Trump that gathered outside Minnesota's fenced-off State Capitol on Wednesday mixed violent rhetoric with jubilation at a four-hour rally that later went to the governor's residence amid chaos in Washington, D.C.

"Now you know why Trump wanted us there!" said Alley Waterbury, a local Republican Party leader from Woodbury who emceed the rally. "My god you guys, we are going to fight, we are going to go down, there's going to be casualties. I'll be the first casualty, I do not care."

My feeling is that in situations like this, you just need someone to give the order. If the President isn't around and the militia needs to be called up, that's not beyond the scope of the Vice President's capacity.

You could see this sort of thing play out in state capitals across the country, notably states that "cheated" Trump out of the victory.

We could see assassination attempts against officials seen as "in on it" or their families.

Vandalizing or destruction of state and local democratic offices and infrastructure.

If a movement is radical enough and has enough fervor to storm the US capital building they're not going to stop there. This goes well beyond being a simple temper tantrum.

-Have any of you thought about how you explain this ---- to your kids?

Already have..and for the most part, they've figured it out. Their opinion of Trump and his staunch supporters are entrenched in their minds.

My daughter was too young to remember 9/11.

Growing up, my parents, grandparents, etc. all recalled the same date that was permanently etched in their memory. They all remember where they were and the details of the day when JFK was assassinated. I imagine Television was a factor in that. I wasn't born yet but I'll take their word for it as to how impactful that event was on them...but it's a consistent memory for all of them. I would have though Pearl Harbor was bigger....but we didn't have TV yet and I suspect if we had CNN during Pearl Harbor broadcasting live the events??? That would eclipse JFK.

But nothing since JFK until 9/11 in terms of the impact on people's memory.

I'll never forget the details of that day. The fear for my kids, their future, and what was going to happen next.

Yesterday's storming of the Capitol? Ugly, embarrassing, and even deadly. It amazes even me that Trump supporters would take it that far....and that we would let them.

But I don't have the same level of concern of how much our world will change after what happened yesterday.

I think the level of anger and hostility displayed yesterday on this thread was driven NOT by what was done or what happened.....it was all about WHO did it. You're all so upset with Trump and his supporters, you chose to elevate the events of yesterday to 9/11. Anybody who dared question that comparison was hammered pretty hard.

"It happened from within!!!"

So? If 9/11 had been perpetrated by US citizens, would it have made 9/11 worse? An argument can be made for that but it's nothing but a massive "what if" and I think it was nothing but a deflection to support an unsubstantiated level of hostility towards anybody who disagreed with you.

Anybody who disagreed with anything here yesterday got a big GFY no matter how small and trivial the issue.

But to those of you who were blogging angry yesterday.....take some responsibility for your choices.
