Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Google and Apple are cracking down on the Parler social networking app two days after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol. Parler has been rife with violent comments since before the attack on the Capitol. Apple told Parler it'll ban the social network's app from its app store if Parler doesn't start to moderate its content better, BuzzFeed reported Friday.

Apple is an independent company. They can ban whoever the hell they want to. Especially that vile chatroom Parler. I'm surprised they hosted it for this long.

The United States operated quite well when we had the "Fairness Doctrine" in place. When you look at the things happening today that era looks great. I believe we need a bi-partisan committee to discuss what is conspiracy theory crap, perhaps even planted by Russians, or if it is actual news. If we don't do something to regulate conspiracy theories we risk losing our country to extremists from either side. No, we actually do have to somehow, fairly and impartially fix our information systems so that our population was provided the true news without conspiracy theory lies designed to divide our nation which it is doing quite effectively.

The United States operated quite well (ok not for everyone but we did create the freedom for civil rights protesters to protest and win the argument about civil rights) when we had the "Fairness Doctrine" in place. If the invasion of the Capital doesn't convince you then nothing will. Realize something, every one of those people who invaded the capital and caused the deaths of 6 people, last count, believed in some conspiracy theory nonsense. Every last one of them. None of those people received news from rational news sources. This is a real problem we need to deal with.

Reddit's largest remaining Trump community banned for "inciting violence"
arstechnica.com

...On Friday, Reddit joined this week's response to violent online rhetoric as spearheaded by President Donald Trump and removed its "r/donaldtrump" community, the site's largest existing community dedicated specifically to Trump. Visiting any of that community's pages now leads to a simple message pointing to Reddit's rules about "inciting violence," which starts by saying, "Do not post violent content."...

Trump, canceled
www.axios.com

...Leaders in business, technology and culture are pulling the plug on their support for President Trump and some of his closest allies in the final days of his presidency.

The big picture: Trump's political power, and his popularity with a large swath of the Republican base, always protected him from a backlash from business and tech leaders " until now. The Capitol siege proved to be the final straw. ...

Good article, it lists the social media companies (which are mostly known at this point), publishers, billionaire allies, academia, etc, that are distancing themselves from Pres trump.

For example, "...On Friday, Lehigh's Board of Trustees announced it would rescind and revoke Trump's 1988 honorary degree. ...

Donald Trump is trying (and failing) to get around Twitter's ban
finance.yahoo.com

...Only a few hours after Twitter announced a ban on President Donald Trump's @realdonaldtrump account, he has attempted to tweet from at least two other accounts under his control. Tweets posted to the official @POTUS account were swiftly deleted, and after the same thread was posted on the Trump campaign's @TeamTrump account, it has been suspended entirely. An account for the Trump campaign's digital director is also suspended.

In a response statement, Twitter cited its ban evasion policy, which says that if an account is being used to evade a ban, it's subject to suspension.

In the deleted tweets, Trump complained about the treatment he's receiving, and claimed he is negotiating with "various other sites" while also looking at building his own platform "in the near future." ...

Discord bans Reddit-linked pro-Trump server tied to attack on the U.S. Capitol
mashable.com

...We're all judged by the company we keep.

With that adage seemingly in mind, Discord moved Friday to ban a pro-Donald Trump server from its platform. TheDonald, as the server was titled, allowed likeminded individuals to digitally gather and was directly linked the recently banned r/DonaldTrump subreddit and a separate discussion forum, thedonald.win.

Following the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol building by pro-Trump extremists, an action which led to five deaths, Reddit banned the r/DonaldTrump subreddit for "inciting violence." Thedonald.win, itself an offshoot of a previously banned subreddit r/The_Donald, was likewise home to numerous calls for violence. ...

Members of thedonald.win did not take the ban well, calling Discord "pedos" and saying "these CEOs need to be dragged out into the street." ...

That's what you want to hear from the people who self-select themselves (overly redundant?) to be the sole deciders of who wins a Presidential election.

Amazon cuts off Parler's web hosting following Apple, Google bans
arstechnica.com

...Amazon Web Services is suspending Parler's access to its hosting services at the end of the weekend, potentially driving the service offline unless it can find a new provider.

"Because Parler cannot comply with our terms of service and poses a very real risk to public safety, we plan to suspend Parler's account effective Sunday, January 10th, at 11:59PM PST," Amazon wrote to Parler in an email obtained and first reported by BuzzFeed. ...
