Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, January 14, 2021

Barry Rubin: On January 6, 2021 I went down to the National Mall to talk with the people who came to Donald Trump's Stop the Steal rally. I wanted to hear from them, in their own voices, explaining why they were there, who was to blame, and what they thought was going to happen next. I didn't expect expect that I would witness an attack on the U.S. Capitol. These are the voices and stories of our fellow Americans, in their own words.

Yeah, I couldn't find one, but here's a good article from the Bulwark site:

Trump's Voters Took the Coup Literally and Seriously

Only a fool points a loaded gun at the heart of a democracy.

The following traitors--Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan, Andy Biggs, Lauren Boebert, Brian Mast, Mike Johnson, and Paul Gosar--resorted to weasel words, legalese, nonsensical constitutional jargon, and preposterously unprovable claims in an attempt to avoid saying directly what they were doing. Trying to have their coup two ways.

But there is no magic language that changed the plain reality of what was happening: This was a coordinated effort by a large bloc of the Republican party to install an illegitimate Trump dictatorship. As Rand Paul tweeted, "The vote today is not a protest; the vote today is literally to overturn the election!"

And with the mob there ain't no such thing as halfway coups.

Here's a tip. When you tell tens of millions of people who worship you that you want to overthrow the government, some of them are going to believe you. And then the violence and vigilantism that mark Third World dictatorships will follow. The seventh House conspirator's speech was interrupted by rioters who understood exactly what these traitors were calling for. They took them seriously and literally.

And so this riotous mob acted accordingly. They swarmed the walls of the Capitol. They bashed in doors and smashed in windows and clashed with police. As they marched through the halls of the Capitol, causing Congress to flee, they vandalized and stole. They breached the House chamber and occupied the speaker's rostrum. They broke into the speaker's office. Blood was spilled. One woman was shot and killed.

They were following the orders of the President.

It had nothing to do with taking care of that guy who said that the oath was about taking care of the people.

Or any people, for that matter.

No. Definitely the correct thread. I agree with MadBomber 100%, too. His comment is about the video in Gal's post #5. That was hard to watch and it didn't have any of the violence that happened.

Mb's comment was also salient. Several times this theme of Congress' oath, or the oath the National Guard took, or even the function of government was, to these people, only about taking care of them. Nothing about the ideals of this Nation. Of what America is actually all about. Nothing about the Constitution. The rule of law. They had no concept of anything except needing someone to take care of them above all else. Nothing else mattered.

This is how an autocrat comes to power.

These people were the most childish, irresponsible, clueless "woe is me, I'm a victim" I have ever seen.

Oh, and specifically there was one guy that confronted the Nat'l Guard and yelled "What about your oath!?!" and clearly didn't know what the oath he supposedly took himself was about.

#16 There also appeared to be an assumption on the part of the protester that the military was with them. This seemed to be echoed in a Q-anon posting that Angrydad put up indicating that the military would be conducting "mop up" operations for 13 days following a failed Biden inauguration.

In reality, this is what senior military leaders had to say in response to the riots:

www.huffpost.com

And that's ignoring the legions of former military leaders who have not made a statement. That includes (but not limited to) Admiral William McRaven (JSOC, USSOCOM) and Mad Dog Matthis. Both of whom are EXTREMELY influential in the military community, as well as being outspoken critics of Trump.

I don't see an insurrection being even remotely possible, but certainly not if you have to fight your way through JSOC to get there. Not happening.

#21 | Posted by bocaink at 2021-01-14 10:45 PM | Reply

I don't agree with MB about COVID restrictions at all.

Economically I think too many of us have accepted the Rights definition of Socialism. Because the right is so scared of Socialism, and the Right gets upset over taxes for anything and they point to countries like Venezuela or Cuba and say that's where America's heading because Democrats are "socialists." This is completely wrong on so many levels it is ridiculous.

But we fight it by saying "Democratic Socialism" like Denmark, or Sweden, or Finland, or Norway, etc. In the classic definition none of those countries are 'socialist" at all. They are all capitalist countries with a robust welfare state and wealth distribution systems.

The latter is, however, also anathema to the "Right." They hate taxes and the insurance that we put in place through programs paid for by everyone's taxes. They hate any effort to expand protections. They cry out "Socialism!" when it isn't, of course.

So they continue the error of what Socialism is, and the mischaracterization continues. It is politically beneficial to them, and we don't have a clean, neat word or name to use. So the term "Socialism" gets redefined to "Democratic Socialist" and the economies of those countries are held up as examples - to contrast against "Autocratic Socialist" countries (VZ, Cuba).

It's unfortunate because then we get fake populist movements that spring up that are clueless what economic system they are actually for - they just know they're mad.

Good lord that is rambling. Just my opinion anyway. G'night.

I honestly think, or at least I hope, the constant bombardment of facts will give MB some room to consider. I give him credit, from the time I've known him on DR to evolve and gravitate towards the truth. I understand you want to keep a relatively conservative (small C) outlook on policy, but as you see, the shark was jumped a long time ago. Norman Rockwell has left the building. I think MB will ultimately evolve.

America is way more FKKD than Germany BTW

Who's sorry now? This guy for one:

After entering US Capitol during riot, man from Louisville now in hiding

As an angry mob continued storming the U.S. Capitol moments after one of the participants was shot and killed by Capitol Police, Damon Beckley unleashed during a now-viral interview.

"Vice President Pence, my name is Damon Michael Beckley, and I do not appreciate one bit this situation you caused here, sir!" the enraged man says, in part. "We're not putting up with this tyrannical rule. If we're going to come back here and start a revolution and take all of these traitors out, which is what should be done, then we will!"

"They're not going to change their corruption just because we're out here hollering about it," he said, in part. "We're going to have to go in there and pull these people out, because they're not just going to leave, OK."

We've all heard the phrase, you lead by example. Well, Donald Trump has been leading by example for over 4 years now, and he has suffered no consequences for his constant lies, his manipulation, his bullying and his threats. Some of his diehard supporters, who decided to follow his example, are now finding out that they don't have the presidential immunity he does and that Trump isn't going to pardon and/or pay for their legal bills as he promised to do for others in the past.

Of course this is Donald Trump we are talking about, so maybe he will pardon them but he won't pay their legal fees:

NEW: The man known as "QAnon Shaman," Jacob Chansley, who was seen during the U.S. Capitol rioting wearing face paint and horns--is asking President Trump for a pardon.

Chansley's attorney says his client was only following the president's invitation to march to the Capitol. "My client had heard the oft-repeated words of President Trump," Al Watkins said in a press release. "The words and invitation of a president are supposed to mean something."

You're giving me far too much credit. Much more than I deserve. Because it's not "my" economics. It's just economics. And my positions weren't formulated in a vacuum. If I still held the same beliefs I held at age 19, I would likely be the most far left ------------ on this site. But then I went to college and took a bunch of economics courses. The grad school and more economics courses.

And there is a difference between the social science of economics and economic policy. I think your issues with me have to do with policy. The thing is, I don't cling to any particular policy elements. My issue come with people advocating for policy without understanding what the economic impacts of that policy will be.

Yeah. Says the guys who has never set foot in an economics class.

If my boss asks me if we can do something, the answer is always "yes...but."

The "but" is what matters.

You can demand that the top 1%, or .1% or whatever, pay 100% if the taxes, But they have a vote, both literally and figuratively.

That's what progressives don't seem to be able to grasp-that the response of those who are targets by economic policy will respond in whatever manner best befits them. Tax rates inccrease? Cool. There are many ways to get around paying it. Maybe you just stop working after you've hit a certain income threshold. Maybe you buy an airplane or helicopter to use as a write-off. Maybe you move to a different country.

Bottom line is that there are lots of options that you and your team don't recognize because you refuse to acknowledge economics.

Try again, MB:

Economics of fascism

Historians and other scholars disagree on the question of whether a specifically fascist type of economic policy can be said to exist. David Baker argues that there is an identifiable economic system in fascism that is distinct from those advocated by other ideologies, comprising essential characteristics that fascist nations shared.[1] Payne, Paxton, Sternhell et al. argue that while fascist economies share some similarities, there is no distinctive form of fascist economic organization.[2][3][4] Gerald Feldman and Timothy Mason argue that fascism is distinguished by an absence of coherent economic ideology and an absence of serious economic thinking. They state that the decisions taken by fascist leaders cannot be explained within a logical economic framework.[5]

Fascist movements tended to support pragmatic responses to varying economic circumstances, and did not have any fixed economic principles other than a general desire that the economy should help build a strong nation.[6] As such, scholars argue that fascists had no economic ideology, but they did follow popular opinion, the interests of their donors and the necessities of World War II. In general, fascist governments exercised control over private property, but they did not nationalize it.[7] Scholars also noted that big business developed an increasingly close partnership with the Italian Fascist and German fascist governments. Business leaders supported the government's political and military goals. In exchange, the government pursued economic policies that maximized the profits of its business allies.[8]

While other Western capitalist countries strove for increased state ownership of industry during the same period, Nazi Germany transferred public ownership and public services into the private sector.[9] Fascist regimes have been described as being authoritarian or totalitarian capitalist.[9][10][11][12]

The "anybody but Hillary crowd" are simply idiots. Hillary Clinton became the target of the right when Bill assigned her the task of creating a national healthcare plan and they attacked so relentlessly that even many Democrats fell for their lies and should be ashamed of their weak mindedness.
At this point in history only an idiot would still contend that Donald Trump was fairly elected President or that he was the best choice.
