"Pelosi said that the House will adopt new rules when it returns to session Jan. 21 to mandate stiff fines for bypassing security: $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for the second. The fines will be deducted from lawmakers' salaries.

"It is tragic that this step is necessary, but the chamber of the People's House must and will be safe," Pelosi said in a statement."

ALSO

"House Democrats adopted new rules Tuesday night to mandate fines for lawmakers who fail to follow rules requiring masks on the House floor during the COVID-19 pandemic. Failure to wear a mask will result in a $500 fine on the first offense and $2,500 for a repeat offense."

... lawmakers who fail to follow rules ...

So let me try to understand this...

The House passes laws that we citizens must obey.

Yet some members of the House seem to deem themselves above any rules governing how the should act.

Am I correct so far?

In response to such behavior, the leader of the House deems it necessary to pass rules to encourage those Representatives to abide by what they legislate?

OK, my wording is not the best, but WTF.

These Reps are passing laws telling us what to do, yet they cannot even have the appearance of abiding by guidelines?

Why do they think they are so much better than you or I?

(this comment is directed mainly at that QAnon Rep, and why she thinks she is guided so differently. Why she thinks it is OK to break security when the Capitol is being attacked.)

LAMP

It's the God syndrome . . . or in her case, the Goddess syndrome.

It something that happens to politicians who don't have the I.Q., humility or discipline to keep themselves in check. These are the same people who stop being public servants and start being self-servers once they're elected.

Republicans are particularly weak in this area.

To bypass the metal detectors you just have to be rich.

That's the most Nancy P. thing that she could have possibly done.

Why not just set a rule that if you don't go through the detector you don't get in? You can't buy your way past airport security.

"Just" have to be rich? THAT'S RICH... So if you come and go from the room say half a dozen times during an average day that's $60k/day - $300k/week. Your salary is gone before the first week is over. You'd have to be pretty rich to not flinch at that. This was aimed at and because of the Sedition Caucus.

She is just giving them an option, I don't know if she needs to. The way I see it this is the old saying "Free speech isn't Free". They can have their "freedumbs" but there is a hefty price tag. But I agree with you all it takes is a loon like Boebert to skip the line once.

Just 50 of the members there have a combined net worth of $2.5 billion dollars.

It's rules for the little people, as usual.

Redial is spot on. No detection, no entry.

You can. I can pick you up at a local airport in a private aircraft, fly you to another airport and drop you off. Private or charter, doesn't matter. You will never, ever, see the TSA.

Only the plebes flying commercial get searched.

How rich is she though? $5/day can add up pretty quickly.

Nancy Pelosi doesn't go through the TSA either lol. No Speaker of the House does nor will unless it's a publicity stunt. She's shuttled around by the USAF. It's how Trump was able to cancel her Afghanistan trip.

I don't get it. How does this make the facility more secure?

There's already talk that some GOP reps may have facilitated the attempted coup. How will the fines dissuade some of the Q-Anon reps from carrying through on their prophecy? If they feel like shooting someone they just have to pay a $5K fee deducted from their next paycheck?

I get the point is to punish the small business owner from Colorado who's wacky.

This isn't the way to do it. It's a stupid stunt that undermines all of the scared talk reps are spewing now. Scared? Then it's TSA level security on all entrances, and again into main chambers or into wings. Naked body scanner, air sniffer, bomb and narco dogs, the whole 9 yards.

Since Congress doesn't subject themselves to the TSA security system, it could lead one to believe it's all theater to begin with. I digress though. What's really going to go away? The pre-right wing stormings. AOC leading the rabble to Pelosi's office. The poster holding, screaming people crashing the Kavanaugh hearings

Obviously that's what I was referring to. I didn't think I had to be that specific, but I guess I was wrong.

#19 | Posted by REDIAL at 2021-01-14 11:09 AM | Reply

Well, it's congress, and while they're rich on average, there's also a huge wealth disparity in it between the top and bottom so I feel it's worth mentioning.

As a practical aside for us not in politics, you can get into a small Cessna for less than that mid-life crisis sports car, and a hell of a lot less than a modern center console fishing boat.

What would be the purpose of screening a charter or private flight? is someone going to charter a plane just to blow themselves and their friends up?

Give them an option metal detector or ---- probe.

It's a good thing there isn't technology available that can 3-D print a plastic pistol from freely available plans to plug and print. That would be a nightmare for security!

#21 | POSTED BY TFDNIHILIST AT 2021-01-14 11:27 AM | FLAG:

I know of at least one confirmed suicide attack by private aircraft. A guy crashed his Piper into the IRS building in Austin. The cost difference between the 9/11 Hijacking and them chartering the 757s is about the price of a sports car. Probably worth thinking about from time to time, but my overall point was that this is just theater like TSA security.

Risk of being bankrupt from legal fees, and in BOAZ's case, losing military retirement benefits, as well as loss of employment as a financial consequence which may be a more effective deterrent than we realize, in stopping the sedition.

#25 | Posted by oldwhiskeysour at 2021-01-14 02:06 PM | Reply

Risk? 2A groups will just bankroll it for her. Takes an already stupid publicity stunt and elevates it for the perpetrator.

Of course they're pissed. Lord knows what variety of items they'll pull out of their pants.

#27 | Posted by madscientist at 2021-01-15 09:25 AM | Reply

I am pretty sure she cannot bar a representative from getting to a session of Congress for almost any reason. So really the only thing she can do is fine them.

So, while you may claim this is a "rich people" thing, in actuality it is the only option she had other than trying to have them expelled from the House of Representatives.

Though, I guess there is a caveat. That this is her only option assuming she decides to actually follow the constitution. Since only liberals seem to follow the constitution, I can see why you think that alternative (unconditional) methods should be used to get their compliance. But, we are not like you. And to us the constitution matters.

There shouldn't be any question, if they don't successfully pass through the metal detectors and subsequent scans (aka no weapons), they don't enter the premises. If they won't follow the rules, they won't enter the building.

It works for TSA (thank you bush), why shouldn't it work for Congress (thank you tRump)?

#30 | Posted by lduvall at 2021-01-16 12:47 PM | Reply

So, this is merely warning of a teensy reduction in their taxpayer grift and doesn't impact their ownership of weapons whatsoever.

This would be a completely different tune had they actually met the mob.

What happened to comply or die? I bet compliance will go up after a few congress people get shot to death.
