Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, January 20, 2021

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday, taking office at a moment of profound economic, health and political crises with a promise to seek unity after a tumultuous four years that tore at the fabric of American society. ... The ritual transfer of power came shortly after Kamala Devi Harris was sworn in as vice president by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, her hand on a Bible that once belonged to Thurgood Marshall, the civil rights icon and Supreme Court justice. -- New York Times

In 2016 I did not expect that in 2021 Donald Trump and the Trumpites would have me and the rest of us licking quite this many wounds, and being so consistently self-righteous about the damage they'd done.

I lost thousands of dollars because of these people but feel lucky not to be among those who lost homes and livelihoods.

I and my wife got sick with COVID but feel lucky not to be among those we know who were hospitalized and died.

I feel grateful that the veterans of World War II, who fought and bled to stop Hitler, didn't have to see Donald Trump have his chance to go full fascist dictator.

We aren't done with Donald Trump. He needs to answer for the lot we know he's done and that huge list of crimes no one has discovered yet.

No justice; no peace.

Officer Who Confronted Capitol Mob Is Escorting Kamala Harris To Inaugural Ceremony
www.npr.org

...On this day two weeks ago, U.S. Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman became a hero, as he bravely directed participants in the pro-Trump mob that stormed the Capitol away from the Senate chamber.

Today, officer Goodman was given the honor of escorting Vice President-elect Kamala Harris through that same building to the inaugural ceremony.

Goodman, who is Black, is seen in a video confronting the mostly white mob, some holding Confederate flags, and diverting them away from the Senate chamber, where lawmakers were meeting in the process of certifying the results of the presidential election. Five people died in the rioting, and Goodman is credited with helping to avert additional bloodshed.

Legislation has been introduced in Congress to give Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal for his actions. He has also been named the acting deputy sergeant-at-arms for the House for Inauguration Day....

All of the performers took off their masks while doing their acts and I'm sure they were tested and cleared however they still fist-bumped others, at most, while unmasked. Not so with Garth. Don't give a crimson-neck more credit than they deserve.

1:40 p.m. " Biden and Harris review the readiness of the military in a review at the Capitol, a longstanding tradition to reflect the peaceful transition of power to a new commander in chief.

2:25 p.m. " Biden, Harris and former Presidents Obama, George W. Bush and Clinton, along with their spouses, will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery.

3:15 p.m. " The new president and vice president will then proceed to the White House to receive a Presidential Escort, with each branch of the military represented.

Instead of the traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, there will be a virtual "Parade Across America" with performances from all 50 states and several territories. Jon Stewart is expected to make an appearance, and Earth Wind & Fire is among the musical acts.

5:15 p.m. " Biden will enter the Oval Office for the first time as president. He is expected to sign more than a dozen executive actions reversing some of Trump's signature policy initiatives and setting a new tone for his administration.

8:30 p.m. " "Celebrating America" virtual television event, hosted by legendary actor Tom Hanks with performances by Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, Tim McGraw, Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend and Foo Fighters.

The 90-minute event will also include remarks from the new president and vice president.

(saw Tom Hanks movie News from the World set in Reconstruction Texas with an old story told well, and a great young child actor as the girl recovered from the Kiowa)

President-elect Joe Biden plans to take 17 executive actions during his first hours in office Wednesday, moving faster and more aggressively to dismantle his predecessor's legacy than any other modern president.

With the stroke of a pen, he'll halt construction of Trump's border wall, reverse his travel ban targeting largely Muslim countries, and embrace progressive policies on the environment and diversity that Trump spent four years blocking.

Biden also plans to reverse several of Trump's attempts to withdraw from international agreements, rejoining the Paris climate accord and halting the United States' departure from the World Health Organization -- where Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government's top infectious disease expert, will lead the US delegation.

I am very glad that Kamala Harris got the VP nomination. First because it is about time that a woman of color became our Vice President but secondly because I think her being part of the ticket greatly increased turnout and is probably a good part of the reason Biden won the swing states he needed to win. For Democrats to win Presidential races we need candidates that look like the Democratic Party and who lean towards a progressive agenda.

Goodbye, Stephen Miller, the most evil adviser of many bad advisers in WH history.
Goodbye, WH press secretaries, who either lied constantly on camera or (in Grisham's case) did absolutely nothing.
Goodbye, most incompetent and unqualified cabinet in US history.
Goodbye, Robot Yes-man VP Pence.
Goodbye, lying hacks of WH physicians and Trump doctors who allowed themselves ot be used for naked financial or political gain.
Goodbye, craven sycophant staffers who will shortly claim they stayed on to help temper Dotard's worst impulses.
Goodbye, obviously unqualified mega-donor Consulate staff and Ambassadors, who helped alienate our allies and please our enemies.
Goodbye, gaudy Oval Office curtains and useless Rose garden and outrageously wasteful tennis courts.
Goodbye, "alternative facts" and fake data and governing-by-division of the citizenry.
Goodbye, ignoring of ther COVID pandemic and the 400,000 dead and the hundreds of thousands more with permanent disabilities.
Goodbye, useless vanity project Wall with hundreds of children kept as grisly souvenirs, most probably permanently emotionally damaged by now.
Goodbye, "leadership" by insult and threats
Goodbye, Administration-by-trolling

History will shortly have you in the books as the worst, the most divisive, the most grifting and criminal administration in our history.
Soon, a few senators and Congresspeople will join you, as they should.

'A Total Failure': The Proud Boys Now Mock Trump
www.nytimes.com

...After the presidential election last year, the Proud Boys, a far-right group, declared its undying loyalty to President Trump.

In a Nov. 8 post in a private channel of the messaging app Telegram, the group urged its followers to attend protests against an election that it said had been fraudulently stolen from Mr. Trump. "Hail Emperor Trump," the Proud Boys wrote.

But by this week, the group's attitude toward Mr. Trump had changed. "Trump will go down as a total failure," the Proud Boys said in the same Telegram channel on Monday.

As Mr. Trump departed the White House on Wednesday, the Proud Boys, once among his staunchest supporters, have also started leaving his side. In dozens of conversations on social media sites like Gab and Telegram, members of the group have begun calling Mr. Trump a "shill" and "extraordinarily weak," according to messages reviewed by The New York Times. They have also urged supporters to stop attending rallies and protests held for Mr. Trump or the Republican Party....

Hypothetically, things should get better now that orange traitor is out of the way and onwards and upwards with control of the House, Senate and POTUS. Please do not spend too much time(any) trying to appease the traitors in the GOP. Spare the rod spoil the child I say, and focus on bringing this virus under control everything else will follow after. Good luck Uncle Joe and Madame VP Harris.

I was working and only saw bits and pieces, but I must admit, my eyes got a little misty watching the ceremony, especially during Biden's speech and Lady Gaga's anthem. Corky nailed it above - Biden said all the right things, and meant them.

For the first time in far too long, I felt proud to be an American. The inauguration was beautiful despite everything.

Biden has been President for 7 hours now. Are we Communist yet or does that start tomorrow?

All kidding aside, a huge congratulations to President Biden and Vice President Harris. And a huge sigh of relief for the rest of us.

@#100 ... Hypothetically, things should get better now that orange traitor is out of the way and onwards and upwards with control of the House, Senate and POTUS. Please do not spend too much time(any) trying to appease the traitors in the GOP. ...

I disagree with that excerpt to some extent.

Yes, things will get better because there is no longer a person in the Oval Office who puts his own narcissism above the needs of the Country.

That aside...

The GOP really needs to up their game, significantly. We, the Country, need a solid two-party system. We need the discussion of differing ideas to move the Country forward.

What we, the Country, do not need is having one of the parties so susceptible to wild, unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.

We need to get past the point where we currently are, where slim majorities dictate.

We need to get to the place where vigorous debates come to the better conclusions.

The History channel had a series called, America's Book of Secrets. There was an awesome episode about the LIbrary of Congress, showing how the knowledge of the Country is treated.

And if you engage in feedback loops, note that the Library of Congress website has a page for the show...

I agree, Lamplighter. We need two, if not more, parties to hash out ideas. I'm not convinced the Democrats know everything. But under Trump, the Republicans were not worth even talking to. They have shown a hunger for power that outpaces the country's best interest. To put it mildly.

How embarrassing though for the entire country to find out your middle name is Robinette.

Not as embarrassing as "Nihilist" :-)

It was his grandmother's maiden name. It's French.

Actually President Obama outed him in 2016 while awarding him the Presidential Medal of Freedom (with distinction).
