On Monday, Sen. Rob Portman and his wife, Jane, walked into a room resplendent with ornate art deco murals and fixtures in the Hilton Netherland Plaza in downtown Cincinnati.

By announcing this now, Senator Portman frees himself from many potentially complicating factors with regard to the upcoming impeachment trial. He previously stated that the "President bears some responsibility for what occurred" after the Jan 6th insurrection.

He knows the huge idiot/seditionist wing of the Republican Party will primary him like they did so many other thinking Republicans. Bob Corker (TN) and Jeff Flake (AZ) came to the same sad realization two years ago.

Without this burden on his back, perhaps Portman will vote to convict Trump.

He probably doesn't feel comfortable being part of that cult any longer.

"He probably doesn't feel comfortable being part of that cult any longer."

If he had any integrity at all he'd run explaining how he really felt, and risk losing to a even further right Republican in the primary. I suppose that's too much to ask these days.

Always seen as an establishment Repub in Ohio, and in Greater Cincinnati fit that role well. I think he ended up capitulating to the Trump train, but didn't give into it much, and probably got nothing out of it. Ohio has always had a few left-handed dorks in the GOP, but I would be surprised if any rise to becoming a viable candidate for Senate. A moderate GOP guy/gal will take this seat...

If he wants to serve longer, why not switch parties and re-run?

When repubs dont have the balls to say "my party has gone insane" they whine about "partisanship" instead.
