Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., will preside over former President Donald Trump's trial in the Senate, a Senate source told NPR.

"The Constitution says the chief justice presides when the person facing trial is the current president of the United States, but senators preside in other cases, one source said.

The House impeachment managers will formally trigger the start of former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial at 7 p.m. ET Monday evening when they walk the article of impeachment across the Capitol and read on the Senate floor the charge against Trump, the first President in history to be impeached twice.

The contours of Trump's Senate trial are starting to take shape as the ceremonial elements get underway, with the Senate's longest-serving Democrat expected to preside over the trial and Democrats still weighing whether to pursue witnesses during proceedings that could take up a chunk of February."

Pretty dramatic hearing the Articles of Impeachment read. Glad to hear they not only mentioned his trying to subvert the election in GA, but left open room to expose other new allegations of subverting the election through the DOJ as we are still learning about that.

And interesting that this is read in the very crime scene where the insurrection occurred.

...still weighing whether to pursue witnesses during proceedings that could take up a chunk of February.

I think Bernie suggested the other day they can walk and chew gum at the same time. President Biden can EO Lewzer's legacy into the wood chipper in the meantime.

Listening to the charges made me feel angry again... like a flashback of the last four years.

(CNN) Sen. Patrick Leahy was hospitalized out of an abundance of caution on Wednesday, just hours after presiding over the opening of former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial.

"This evening, Senator Leahy was in his Capitol office and was not feeling well. He was examined in the Capitol by the Attending Physician," his spokesperson David Carle said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, the Attending Physician recommended that he be taken to a local hospital for observation, where he is now, and where he is being evaluated."

If the world is fair Senator Leahy will return to the floor in a Superman costume.
