Tim Miller: Bruce Castor's opening statement in defense of former President Donald Trump was one of the worst presentations I have ever seen by a public speaker, in any context.

An incompetent president and his incompetent legal team. Serves him right. This keeps the public from being bamboozled by slick talking lawyers. You get to see the ugly truth. There is no glossing over what happened on January 6.

Well, yeah.

But look at what he has been tasked to defend.

If this is the best legal defense team that is willing to work for Trump then he is royally boned if and when he gets hit with criminal charges.

I think Castor had to throw out his original presentation after he was gobsmacked by the Democrats case ~ which was spellbinding. Riveting even.

It was a tough act to follow when you know your own client has no case at all.

"And this guy is going to win."

I know it's annoying but be patient.

This probably isn't going to be his biggest legal problem.

This probably isn't going to be his (Trump's) biggest legal problem.

The entire world looks forward to this being true.

As a trial attorney who has given far in excess of 100 opening statements to juries in the past 29 years, I cannot imagine what Castor was thinking or thought he was doing. We all have case where there is not a lot to say or the client is clearly guilty. But this is not one of them. I personally may think Trump was guilty as hell, but certainly there is a LOT any experienced attorney could say in his defense. Especially within the generalized parameters of an opening statement. Hell, Castor could have spent the whole 45 minutes just going over the argument for why the entire proceeding is unconstitutional now that Trump is out of office. Or the absurdity of claiming that a political speech to a group of supporters was specifically intended to incite an immediate insurrection. The Senators may not have agreed with him, but at least he would not have come across like a feckless amateur. Sad thing is, I have seen feckless private attorneys like this occasionally in the court house. Every body rolls their eyes when they learn who the attorney is and assume the client either could not afford better, or blindly got the name off a lawyer referral list.

Well, to be fair, at least Castor didn't leak any oil.

Giuliani could have done a better job. In fact, I half expected him to show up in court today as part of the defense team. He might yet.
