Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Rush Limbaugh, the conservative media icon who for decades used his perch as the king of talk-radio to shape the politics of both the Republican Party and nation, died Wednesday after a battle with cancer. He was 70 years old. ... A pioneer of AM talk-radio, Limbaugh for 32 years hosted "The Rush Limbaugh Show," a nationally-syndicated program with millions of loyal listeners that transfigured him into a partisan force and polarizing figure in American politics.

Limbaugh offered a conditional apology after he accused actor Michael J. Fox of exaggerating his Parkinson's disease and apologized when he a insulted law school student Sandra Fluke. He relentlessly attacked President Barack Obama, going as far as to fan the flames of birtherism, the discredited idea that Obama was born outside the United States and therefore not eligible to be President. And, in the last few years, he peddled "deep state" conspiracy theories, providing cover for President Donald Trump, who he counted as a friend.

Few people have been more directly responsible for the onset of a decline in civility and adherence to truth than Rush Limbaugh. His daily rants created needless fear, paranoia and an "otherism" that allowed his listeners to believe progress was the work of the devil. His poisonous talk metastasized like the cancer that killed him, eventually eating away the soul of conservatism and giving birth to the madness that begat Donald Trump.

Rush Limbaugh seems to think he knows why Robin Williams died in an apparent suicide earlier this week " and it's because unhappiness is an attitude of the political left.

The leftist attitude is "one of pessimism and darkness, sadness " they're never happy, are they?" Limbaugh said on Tuesday's broadcast of his radio show. "They're always angry about something. No matter what they get, they're always angry."

Rush was the poster child for hatred.

He may not have hated personally (I think his shtick was mostly an act) but the level of hate he incited for profit makes him the King of Hate.

Hating on him is therefore an ode to his life of Hatred.

If we really wanted to be rude we should spend the thread saying nice things about him.

I'll start.

The way he handled those cigars made Monica Lewinsky blush.

Yes, how dare they denigrate this wonderful patriotic billionaire, who dedicated his life to making sure the suffering working class blamed their problems on gays and immigrants instead of on the bankers and plutocrats who control the republican party.

He selflessly spread climate change denial so that more people could lose their homes to extreme weather.

He spread debunked trickle down economic theories because the working man really wants billionaires' taxes to be lower.

Rush Limbaugh defended Joseph Kony
ibid
On October 14, 2011, Limbaugh questioned the U.S. military initiative against Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), based on the assumption that they were Christians.[182] "They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them."[183] Upon learning about the accusations leveled against Kony, which included kidnapping whole schools of young children for use as child soldiers, Limbaugh stated that he would research the group.[184][185] The show's written transcript on his website was not changed.[185][186]

Rush Limbaugh on Sexual Assault and Consent

Limbaugh dismissed the concept of consent in sexual relations.[81][82] He views consent as "the magic key to the left".[83] In 2014, Limbaugh criticized a policy at Ohio State University encouraging students to obtain verbal consent, saying "How many of you guys ... have learned that 'no' means 'yes' if you know how to spot it?"[8

Boaz thinks that Rush Limbaugh and Jimmy Carter are equivalent. He doesn't understand why one of them would merit a much harsher response in death than the other.

He wants to sweep Limbaugh's entire life full of cruelty under the rug.

"If Christianity means you can do terrible things from the first day of your life to the last, ask for forgiveness in the final hour and get into Heaven, Heaven isn't a very exclusive club."

speaking for myself, one of the most difficult tenets of Christianity (well, Catholicism for sure)to accept is how everything can be zeroed out at death once once someone, despite their evil acts, can repent late in life (really late in life in some cases) and if they can repent truly in their heart they avoid hell.

Here's my take on this......I don't believe Rush believed he was wrong with how he talked about others, attacked them, persuaded listeners with lies, etc.

He didn't accept any wrong in that so there was nothing to repent for. (Yet another difficult tenet to understand and accept)

This is a valid critique of Conservatism in general.
You see the same attitude from conservatives in Texas about their power issues: Government shouldn't even try to help people with those kinds of issues.

"If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger."
Well, if it does kill people, and you're okay with that, then you belong to a Death Cult.

I don't believe Rush believed he was wrong with how he talked about others, attacked them, persuaded listeners with lies, etc.

Not everything is so subjective.

And simply saying "I believe" before something doesn't make it so.

He was an objectively horrible person, hence why a majority of people cheered when hearing this news.

I usually try to be kind about the deaths of people - even those I don't agree with. There is literally nothing I can say kind about this man.

Yes when he started he was right wing and parroted many things . In the very early 90s, he used to admittedly exaggerate things to entertain I thought at the time. As time went on his show became much more insidious. Twisting things to the point of incredulity for semi-normal people. It wouldn't surprise me if he was behind Q. The man belittled anyone and everyone he disagreed with and had no empathy or respect for the suffering of others even while falling victim to the very same things.

I leave you with this quote I had tucked away:
"I told you once that I was searching for the nature of evil. I think I've come close to defining it: a lack of empathy. It's the one characteristic that connects all the defendants. A genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow man. Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy." -G. M Gilbert

To save you a search, Gilbert was a psychologist who is famous for his observations of Nazi leaders during the Nuremberg trials.

The past four years sure seem to validate evil being the absence of empathy.
(The past forty-five years really, starting with the disconnect between worker productivity and worker pay. But that's a little too abstract for most people.)

Nicole Hemmer
@pastpunditry

Rush Limbaugh radically transformed the Republican Party. He elevated conservative media into a coequal branch of party politics, and pioneered a style of rhetoric, argument, and entertainment that would come to define conservative politics.

The things we now think of as particularly Trumpian features of conservatism - the insults, the conspiracies, the blend of entertainment and politics and anger - Limbaugh had been doing it for a quarter-century before Trump showed up to the party.

He did what the first generation of conservative media activists had failed to do: he made right-wing media entertaining, profitable, and politically powerful. Though he was building on their work, he also transformed it.

He often bent the GOP to his will: his immense popularity when he arrived on the national scene in 1988 confounded GOP politicians, who chose to court him for fear of crossing him.

From George HW Bush putting him up overnight in the Lincoln bedroom to Michael Steele begging his forgiveness, he was a a precursor to the kind of loyalty politics on the right with which we're now so familiar.

He infused his show with racism and misogyny, wrapping both in jokes and satire so he could claim that critics were taking him too seriously. But it was a consistent feature of his show for decades.

Anyway, there's much more to say, but for now I'll just end by noting that the trends you've seen in the GOP over the last five years have all been visible on Limbaugh's show for decades - not just bc he prefigured them but bc he helped create Trump's Republican Party.

Nobody forces anyone onto Welfare.
Your race is free to leave the Democrat Plantation any time you wish.
If Blacks don't want to leave, whose fault is that?
???

#188 | Posted by snoofy

Weird topic for a Rush Limbaugh Obit but I bite...

You know, I don't know if BOAZ is actually black or not. But I am sort of tired of the argument that welfare is "THE REASON" - it was the cry in my white family during the 80s. It is simplistic, ignorant and I even say arrogant. I will not argue that "welfare" in PART has reduced many poor families to a vicious generational cycle - not only blacks. But people do escape - MANY people do escape. I know MANY that did escape - Black, White, Hispanic... One young woman I know, well it is utterly heartbreaking to listen to her talk about her childhood but she has broke the cycle and done well. A black friend who is now a motivational speaker and educator broke the cycle and openly talks about the FOUR GENERATIONS of poverty and VICIOUS violence by the men in his family against their wives that he has broke. Not only physical and mental abuse but murder as well.

When it comes to minorities and blacks in particular this goes way back, I would argue that this isn't some Democrat plot to hold people down as much as it is the systematic "racism" this country has perpetrated against minorities and blacks in particular forever. (For that matter whites have done it to successive waves of white immigrants as well - Irish, Italians, Poles, etc. But they are white and I digress...) The "war on drugs" in particular being is a huge contributor and was aimed at Blacks since the end of Probition. "Law and Order" Republicans as well and the cry for punishment of the 90s. This is so much deeper than the simplifications I am making. Understand that the breakdown of the family unit is yet another root issue. Today black men make up 34% of the prison population. They are incarcerated at a rate of 3 times the population and that is after percentage has fallen dramatically since 2006. There are a full 1/3 less black men incarcerated today then in 2006 while white and Hispanic numbers have dropped but not nearly like the number of blacks. Also understand there are a lot of "single" poor black mothers who do try and lack a support system. They work and they work multiple jobs often but most often because of a lack of education these are all too often low paying jobs and they are not home to build family. Then there is the poor inner city schools that are primarily black where the children (ALL the children) receive a poor education all too often further limiting their ability to break the cycle (prime examples are near me right now). And the last item I will mention but not least is many black leaders are just as guilty about holding their people down. Political? Sure. Religious even more. I have seen how that works first hand and it further makes me question religious leaders in general.

Bottom line is there is no simple this is why answer. There is a SYSTEM of issues that goes back hundreds of years. Today it is often obfuscated in society rather than in the open but it is still very much there.

Bellringer,do you support a high minimum wage? The best way to help people out of poverty is to make their work more valuable. A high minimum wage does this. Tax cuts for billionaire's does not. Do you support universal healthcare? Insurance costs are a major drain on everyone's finances and cripple our ability to compete globally with countries that have state funded healthcare.

Do you support higher taxes to fund social needs? This has been shown to increase general prosperity and diminish inequality.

All things that help people get ahead without being direct handouts.

He needs at least 300 gut punch posts to keep his spirit entertained while Satan --------- him with Macanudos.

Ho-like other rightwingers he was a Mammonist.
Right now he's grabbing his ankles as Satan warms his colon with a flaming pineapple on a pitch fork.
