This just opens the door for a herd of impalas to go after Chevy.

The automaker says its vehicle names have been carefully chosen over the years to celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess and pride.

Kudos to them for doing so.

Since they named their vehicles to honor Cherokees.

They should continue honoring them by respecting their wishes.

This must all be very confusing for the Italian owners of Jeep.

Hey, does Chevy still make the Corsica? Maybe that would help them understand.

We just got a Grand Cherokee this summer, and as much as I love the vehicle, the name did bother me a bit if I'm being honest. I'm curious to see what Jeep will do

It's probably best they retire that name before one of their Cherokee line of Jeeps is a real dud.

There was a joke I heard as a kid when the Ford Mustangs first came out... something about a mechanic being injured trying to tighten the nuts on a Mustang.

No really. You prolly had to be there.

An Impala is an animal, Cherokees are people. It's a tribe. They should get to own and control the use of the name of their own tribe.

Honestly, I don't think AMC or GM are being disparaging using the names. Tribal names are a complex enough study as it is. It's very different than the use of "Redskins" which is generally offensive in that it condemned a whole array of indigenous people they considered subhuman.

Often the names commonly when referring to a group are just general legal designations used by the government and not by the tribes or the members themselves. It can get complicated. For instance, Cherokee people part of the Iroquois confederacy sharing customs and language with the rest of the Iroquois.
Winnebagos are Algonkian... like Mohicans and Huron.

BTW never call a Lakota or Dakota a Sioux because it's rude.

It is another long-overdue conversation... not unlike BLM.

Isn't it already?

They should remove the name and break the tribe off a check to compensate for using their name without permission. The arrogance of white people thinking they can just conquer people then use the things that are sacred to them for capitalist pursuits is amazing .. more amazing are the people who don't see what's wrong with that.
