Trump didn't lie about covid because it had a lower death rate, he lied because it endangered his presidency. He'd have lied about it no matter what the death rate was, and his cult would have believed him. There are people dying of covid who say covid isn't real because right wing media has brainwashed them so badly.

Once trump poisoned their minds about covid, there's nothing that could be done to make them take it seriously.

A Disturbing percentage of my community didn't take the pandemic seriously.
