Jobs forecast

Businesses and government probably created some 675,000 jobs in March, based on a survey of economists by Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal.

Such an increase would be the largest since October, just as the coronavirus pandemic began to surge again.

By contrast, the U.S. created 379,000 jobs in February and 166,000 in January.

The record increase in cases at the end of last year slammed the brakes on the economy and even caused the U.S. to lose jobs in December for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

"Jobs report blows past expectations as payrolls boom by 916,000 in March

Job growth boomed in March at the fastest pace since last summer, as stronger economic growth and an aggressive vaccination effort contributed to a surge in hospitality and construction jobs, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Nonfarm payrolls increased by 916,000 for the month while the unemployment rate fell to 6%.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for an increase of 675,000 and an unemployment rate of 6%. The total was the highest since the 1.58 million added in August 2020."

Initial monthly unemployment claims are still far exceeding new jobs added.

In March, for instance, there were over 2 million initial UI claims in just the first 3 weeks of the month.

As long as we're still seeing 60,000+ new cases a day that trend will continue.
