Are you intentionally addressing a topic that is not the matter of defunding the police?

#2 | Posted by Tor at 2021-04-06 01:13 AM | Reply | Funny: 2

Paywalled.

In any case, nobody is suggesting therapists be called for actual crimes.

This is LITERALLY an article on why Defunding the Police has to happen!

It's about how Portland police are overworked handling way too many issues that they aren't equipped to handle and which would be better helped by a social worker.

This either the same article or a similar article.

And any therapists counselors or what have you working for a police department would be funded through the police department.

You sound like a stupid Trumper.

You have a stupid Trumper's concept of "defund the police".

Are you a stupid Trumper?

Clearly you've never needed to call the cops in your privileged life.

Not all of us live in gated communities like you princess.

"Defund" means direct some of the departmental budget to efforts like this:

Denver successfully sent mental health professionals, not police, to hundreds of calls

Denver successfully sent mental health professionals, not police, to hundreds of calls
Grace Hauck
USA TODAY

Another U.S. city is reporting early success with a program that replaces traditional law enforcement responders with health care workers for some emergency calls.

Previously, Denver 911 operators only directed calls to police or fire department first responders. But the Support Team Assistance Response (STAR) pilot program created a third track for directing emergency calls to a two-person team: a medic and a clinician, staffed in a van from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

The STAR program, which launched in June, reported promising results in its six-month progress report. The program aims to provide a "person-centric mobile crisis response" to community members who are experiencing problems related to mental health, depression, poverty, homelessness, or substance abuse issues.

"mental health, depression, poverty, homelessness, or substance abuse issues."

None of which are police issues.

Can you see that, Tor, or does your love of the badge not let you see that?

If you're saying that defund mean something other than defund then there's a serious problem and your goal is not going to be reached.

#10 | Posted by Tor at 2021-04-06 09:48 PM | Reply

Defund police means don't fund them for activites like mental health, depression, poverty, homelessness, or substance abuse issues.

"If you're saying that defund mean something other than defund "

It was a loser of a slogan from the outset. Democrats who use it are fools: it alienates more than it entices.

Mental illness: Treat it, don't jail it.

#13 | Posted by bored at 2021-04-06 11:09 PM | Reply

When someone with mental illness is in the act of running towards somebody with a big knife clearly intending to stab them to death they can no longer get special treatment.

The murder rate jumped 500% in Portland in one year when they de-funded the police. Crime skyrocketed in every city that did. Where do you people get your news, CNN?

"they can no longer get special treatment."

Treating mental illness isn't special treatment, Tor.

If we are expecting the police to treat mental illness, then we should fund mental illness training for the police.

No. It didn't.

They had 56. That's about 20 more than 2019. And it's all up after the riots started and almost 25% happened in just July. Source: www.portlandoregon.gov

And the "Defund" is 3%. That's it. Just 3 ------- percent. Source: www.portlandoregon.gov

#18 you read the disclaimer on the top of the web site, right? About how the data is not accurate? Mine came from a local paper. You know why the Portland police are quitting en-masse, and what they are saying about why? Read the local papers. The cops are saying the government is lying. Portland had 5 murders in 2018, and 3 in 2017.

Guess why that isn't MSM.

"Treating mental illness isn't special treatment, Tor."

Okay Rambo how are you supposed to treat mental illness when a psychotic is running towards you with a hunting knife in hand?

"According to the city's crime statistics website, Portland had 56 homicides in 2020. In 2019, the number of homicides was 35 and in 2018, it was 26. "

While true murders are up... when you consider how bad 2020 was for those who lost work and struggled..its not surprising murders would go up.

Even 56 murders for a whole year of the city burning down every night ain't bad for a city this size... Chicago has more murders in a month.

My family still manages to navigate the hellscape of Portland, and we do it unarmed and unharmed... and still love it here.

#21 Hey, can you trace that back to 2014 when all this started to happen? All I can find is incomplete stats missing whole years and giving numbers that would get you flunked out of accounting 101.

You're one of those people who moved to Portland because you watched "Portlandia," and thought it was cool, aren't you.

I've always had to explain to people that that Portlandia is more documentary than comedy.

Jesus dude...I grew up there. How in the actual ---- can you love that place? I have some fond memories, but having gone to college on the east coast, one of the thing that struck me most directly was the difference in character. My friends in PDX mostly wanted to be artists or writers. My friends in college (UNC) wanted to be business professionals. Or doctors. Or lawyers. Or something that would earn a paycheck.

I've always contended that the west coast would be far better off if you could populate it with people from the east cost. It's beautiful country...just full of losers. As we've seen over the last year with the same regards trying to burn the city down again, night after night after night

Not every violent crime is a murderer.

I can guess what you want want to post those numbers of course.

Ftr I liked Portland before it was cool. ;)

#24 | Posted by Tor at 2021-04-08 07:02 PM | Reply

Yeah, the West Coast needs a bunch of loud-mouthed entitled d-bags that whine about "nobody makes a decent bagel here"

F the F off.

#25 | Posted by LegallyYourDead at 2021-04-08 09:15 PM | Reply

Portlandia must be right wing comedy because I thought it was dumb.

If your goals in life are all about making money than I'm happy you found somewhere else to do that. I have never seen anybody in a BMW or Mercedes Benz smiling, they always look mad or stressed to me... where as the hippy driving by in the p.o.s. is always happy.

And lastly, the city has yet to burn down even once, let alone every night. Ease up on the right wing spin, you sound like a drama queen to someone who actually lives here now.

#26 | Posted by 503jc69 at 2021-04-08 09:28 PM | Reply

Portlandia was stupid.

Regarding homicides:

"The last time Portland recorded as many was in 1994, when there also were 55 homicides, according to police.

It remains to be seen if the trend will continue now as it did in the early 1990s, when there were 50 killings in 1991, 46 in 1992 and 54 in 1993. The 2020 count is still far below the peak of 70 that the city reached in 1987."

Article also contains reasoned statements as to the cause. Not that it's hard to figure out.

Here are the 10 most dangerous metro areas in America for 2020
Anchorage, Alaska
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Memphis, Tennessee
Wichita, Kansas
Lubbock, Texas
Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, Michigan
Spokane-Spokane Valley, Washington
Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana
Corpus Christi, Texas
Mobile, Alabama

People in these places should think about moving to Portland for their safety

What's all this garbage about the city burning down?

It hasn't burned... Has it?

#29 | Posted by Tor at 2021-04-08 10:11 PM | Reply

Apparently news of Portland burning down is popular (even though it's total b.s.).. my father living in Thailand asked if we were safe because of the riots and fires everywhere but I have yet to see one pile of ash or any teenage ninjas throwing fireworks at the police.
