Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, April 07, 2021

The Jefferson Davis Memorial Chair in Selma, Alabama was stolen from the Live Oaks Cemetery in March. [A] group, which calls itself "White Lies Matter," is demanding that the [United Daughters of the Confederacy] display a banner featuring a quote by former Black Liberation Army activist Assata Shakur in front of the organization's headquarters in Richmond, Virginia for 24 hours in exchange for the monument.

AL.com obtained an email from group, which says the banner must go up at 1 p.m. ET this Friday, aka the anniversary of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at the end of the Civil War.

"Failure to do so will result in the monument, an ornate stone chair, immediately being turned into a toilet," the alleged culprits warn. "If they do display the banner, not only will we return the chair intact, but we will clean it to boot."

AL.com reported that the White Lies Matter group emailed the news organization directly.

A photo shows that the monument, with a giant hole in the seat, stands ready to become a commode in an instant if the alleged chair thieves' demand goes unsatisfied[.]

I predict a $h!++y outcome.

Is that why they kept a monument to slavery there?

Monuments to traitors and insurrectionists are also very creepy.

In my opinion, in this day and age it is important for all young Americans to learn the history of the Civil War, and understand the toxic role men such as Jefferson Davis played in trying to maintain the institution of slavery and instigating the bloodiest war in this nation's history. The more people know (and understand) the history, the more obviously despicable monuments to men such as Jefferson Davis become.

Maybe they could move all the Confederate statues to Stone Mountain. Add educational content to the displays and convert what is now a theme park to a solemn place for reflection and understanding of our history lest we repeat it.

The monuments that exclusively honor soldiers killed in war (rather than their leaders) should remain in their communities of origin. Most front-line soldiers of their time did not have slaves and did not make an active choice to support slavery, or an understanding that was what the war was about. They were following orders and fighting to protect their families and homes. The soldiers themselves should not be dishonored any more than those who fought in any other "bad" war. All war is bad. The idea that we can judge people, and incidents from history by today's standards with 20/20 hindsight is ill advised. Take away their glory, but don't erase the history.

Love the propaganda.

Couldn't you say the same thing about the Nazis?

Or the idiots of 1/6/21?

Agreed as long as the Southern states don't get to determine their own twisted revisionist version they teach.

"Maybe they could move all the Confederate statues to Stone Mountain."

There are no Confederate statues.

They are statues of Confederates.

They were erected by Americans long after the Civil War, in opposition to Civil Rights.

Most front-line soldiers of their time did not have slaves and did not make an active choice to support slavery, or an understanding that was what the war was about.

Not understanding what the war was about was handed down to their descendants.

After the war it was enshrined into American mythology with the Lost Cause lie.

To this day, lots of people (apologists) say the Civil War was not about slavery.

Cemeteries should be turned into public parks. The residents of the graves won't care. They're dead.

Cemeteries are great places to make out. Just wait for smokie to make his rounds and you've got the place to yourself...unless it's Judgement Day and all the spirits lying dormant in the corpses rise from the dead, that is.

Even serial killers deserve to have Graves unmolested by morons.

Stay out of the cemeteries creepers.

Jefferson Davis can be used as a toilet himself for all I care,he was scum. They should ---- in his comfy chair even if the demands are met.

The man deserved the noose. He served 18 months and was freed, 18 months for leading a rebellion that killed 640,000 people.

"Couldn't you say the same thing about the Nazis?" I'm no expert, but i imagine that not all German soldiers were a party to war crimes, or even aware of the extermination of Jews. They didn't have Google to analyze the inner workings of Nazi party or CNN to tell them what was going on at Auschwitz. Many were young boys, raised on propoganda, followed orders and fired back at the people they believed were firing at them. I'm not referring to Ranking members of the Nazi party or those engaging in known war crimes. They should not ehonored in any way and I think history has done a good job of sorting out the difference.

"Or the idiots of 1/6/21?" I don't see any equivalency here, but no. There is no excuse for anyone who attacked any officer or person or entered the Capitol through broken doors and windows. They knew exactly what they were doing. Different times, different rules.

Ah, only the victors write history, correct? You dont know it, but you are furthering a case for civil war.

"Everyone's point of view is valid, even if you disagree with it."

No. Everyone's got a right to their point of view, no matter how wrong it is, but teaching lies is wrong, and facts are facts, not opinions.

"Everyone's point of view is valid"

Hilarious. Enslaving people is valid. Ok. Killing Jews because they're Jews is valid. Ok. Starving millions because they won't agree with the dear leader is valid. Ok.

Idiot.
