After years of avoiding words like redistribution and labels like socialist, the core of the Democratic Party is embracing big government.

"The coronavirus pandemic, a changing party makeup and a softening approach to debt and deficit have combined to give Democrats the space to embrace expensive policies and federal government expansion that would have been unheard of just a few years ago. President Biden is leading the charge and many Democrats, not just progressives, are eagerly jumping on board.

In less than 100 days, Biden and congressional Democrats have passed the second-largest stimulus bill in U.S. history and launched an infrastructure plan that would spend trillions to remake the economy over the next decade. Polls show significant public support, even as Republicans in Congress have uniformly opposed the president's plans.

It's a dynamic Biden is facing without apology.

"I haven't been able to unite the Congress," Biden told reporters at the White House. "But I've been able to unite the country, based on the polling data."

Democrats are betting that the majority of voters, including many Republicans, actually want the federal government to step in and help heal the social and economic wounds caused by the pandemic."

"Sleepy Joe", indeed.

When you see polling numbers hitting 75% you know he's doing something right. I figured we wouldn't see 70% anytime soon for any president. I know it is on specific items but that's pretty amazing in this divisive time.

We can respond to this in just initials, like FDR, JFK, big government is often the answer to failing infrastructure, wealth disparity, etc. Conservatives love to bring up "big government" as the cause of our problems even as our main competitors are bigger governments. We are currently watching how we can deal with a pandemic and, sorry, big government was part of the answer. We definitely need big government more than we needed big tax cuts for the rich. "Big government" is code for tax cuts for the rich, it is totally nonsense but there are those who are dumb enough to believe it. When have big tax cuts for the rich ever paid off for the rest of us? Answer: never!

I saw this not long after Corky posted the first comment but I hesitated to comment.

but....NO, the democrats are not embracing any such label. They are doing what they are doing but not under the label of "big government".

Hell, even democrats can't stand that label.

I'd put that label back in the box and forget you ever considered repeating it.

I hope they do. Democrats going all socialist is going to push the country further right of Reagan.

After Trump's 3 trillion dollar pay off to his fat cat donors, it is kind of hard for the GOP to accuse the Dems of any malfeasance or unwise policies.

Comcast donates to both sides, it's within a few %. Stock buybacks under Trump, and Biden trying to throw tens of billions at them in his infrastructure bill despite the fact they're very profitable and already invest billions in infrastructure.

Yeah people will be out in the streets demanding to have their cheaper better healthcare taken away so they can get ripped off and bankrupted by illness once again.

So what are you going to do if your prediction ends up being false? I mean, if that's the case, you'll be living in a socialist country whose policies are supported by voters.

What in the world does BOAZ do then?

When the GQP effectively killed the recovery from the Great Recession by refusing to vote for a recovery plan large enough to work, the voters didn't blame Wall Street or corporations, they blamed the government, specifically the Obama Administration. Ultimately Americans WANT a government that works for them. They want a government that thinks big, that makes their lives better, that fixes roads and bridges, improves rail and broadband, replaces old, worn-out infrastructure like water systems and the electrical grid with new infrastructure built for a new century, and finally, that allows our loved ones to live longer in their homes in their golden years. All of that is infrastructure. I think the days of government small enough to drown in the bathtub are thankfully over, people are looking to government because they see that unbridled corporations have managed to make a few people filthy rich, while the rest of us are falling out of the middle class.

The country is already further right than Reagan.
Reagan couldn't get elected as a Republican these days.

Oh no! The workers are controlling the means of production!

How dare people have power over their lives and profit from their labor!

All hail the corporate overlord!

All hail government overreach!

Down with the proletarian!

"Ultimately Americans WANT a government that works for them."

I agree with this.

"They want a government that thinks big"

No, they don't. They see the mess the government makes of all their programs filled with waste and abuse.

"that makes their lives better"

Yes

"that fixes roads and bridges"

Given we already pay for that via gas taxes, hell yes. Unfortunately, we know that they do not do a good job at this and the more money given towards these efforts will just get diverted.

"improves rail and broadband,"

No. I learned my lesson voting for HSR in CA. NEVER AGAIN. Broadband? Maybe on a city level but this should be private industy.

"replaces old, worn-out infrastructure like water systems and the electrical grid"

This is supposed to be done by developer fees. The problem happens when people leave Dem run cities and the remaining population cannot maintain all the infrastructure.

"people are looking to government because they see that unbridled corporations have managed to make a few people filthy rich, while the rest of us are falling out of the middle class.

Only for the losers that got useless educations or are lazy and/or stupid. What people see now after COVID is a totally corrupt beast that is intent on crushing your small business, keeping your kids stupid, and ensuring you cannot work so you are reliant on them for a handout. Yes, for some this is an appealing prospect unfortunately.

Do you have any understanding why almost all of the big cities are run by Democrats? I assume you think it's some kind of conspiracy.

There's a reason I have you plonked, because you're a moron who's not worth my time.

In this case I WILL respond. None of your drivel is true. You might believe it because you spend your time being brainwashed by Reichwing media, but it does not explain the overwhelming support among Democratic, independent and Republican voters for President Biden's infrastructure plan. What's even more interesting, polling shows that elements of that plan that the GQP does not consider infrastructure make the legislation even more popular. People like the idea of improving broadband access to rural areas where only government is willing to make the investment because private industry can't make enough money doing it. I know, you're afraid of this because rural voters might decide through internet research that a working government is a good thing. People overwhelmingly support investment to build water systems that pump clean water into homes making bottled water unnecessary, and an electrical grid for the 21st Century. This is beyond just maintenance and requires a massive investment that only the federal government can make. Voters also support improving wages and benefits for the mostly immigrant women who care for our elderly.

I understand why the GQP hates this bill; the red states are overwhelmingly poor, uneducated, and have the worst infrastructure in the country. The GQP has fed these voters a steady diet of lies about voting, guns, abortion, etc., while time and time again they've cut the taxes of the 1%. They don't want their voters to realize that trickle down has been a massive lie they've propagated for 35+ years to make their donors richer at the expense of everybody else. The red state GQP are unhappy that their voters will discover that they've been lied to, and government isn't the problem, instead it's the solution.

What voters are seeing under the Biden Administration is that government is competent and getting things done, and people recognize that. Unfortunately it took Dotard's regime of textbook incompetence to show people the difference. The fat orange lump of herpes puss probably can't even figure out how to work a zipper, never mind how to run the country. People are figuring out that government under the GQP doesn't work BECAUSE THEY DON'T WANT IT TO WORK! Government works fine when people who believe in the value of government service have the reins.

Complete BS
One of our biggest government programs is Social Security.
Waste fraud and abuse is practically nonexistent.
