Russia ordered its top military brass to return troops to their permanent bases starting Friday, saying it had concluded a "snap inspection" of its forces in the country's east and west, near the Ukrainian border.

@#1 ... Vlad Blinks, Sleepy Joe Doesn't ...

Back in a prior life, during the Cold War I used to read of war games during which one side would mount an "offensive" for one, and only one sole purpose...

The purpose was not to be aggressive, but to gather intelligence info on the "enemy.'

The question in my mind is, is this what Pres Putin did?

Or was he so sloppy as seems to be implied?

In my eyes, too soon to tell...

Most experts felt it was just for show since the Russian military infrastructure was not capable of supporting anything close to that number of troops in a conflict of any sort of magnitude large enough to actually accomplish anything. They just don't have the resources nor the logistics to supply an army in the field. It was nothing more that a sort of 'parade' exercise. Lots flash and stuff moving around, but nothing behind them with the ammo and supplies to say nothing of replacement troops and their supplies.

Everything you said is absolutely true.

I'm also inclined to believe that in those two phone calls (that we know of) with Mr. Putin, President Biden used those two magic words ~ additional sanctions.

Which then leads to your hypothesis about the expense of maintaining Russian troops on a war footing basis indefinitely.

I don't think for a minute that Mr. Putin has given up that easily. He still hankers for the historical recognition of restoring Russia to its former glory as the U.S.S.R.

Maybe he'll wait it out until after 2024 hoping his fortunes will change.

Couldn't get sleepy Joe to say or do something stupid like pooty used to be able to do with his Trumpy poodle.

Too bad so sad. Trumpy never learned the lessons of power and how to speak softly and carry a big stick.

Trumpy's Qtarded Toilet tweets and mushroom shaped Weener just couldn't seem to get the job done.

That is a big part of air and naval operations. During the Cold War we would sprint our jets towards Soviet ships, installations, etc, to get the inexperienced troops running air defenses to turn on their sensors so we could record the wavelengths and develop counter-measures. The jets would peel off before violating international boundaries.

We're the previous guy still in charge, Putin would now hold title to Ukraine, Wales and West Dakota after our ace negotiator performed some deal art on his Russian pal. Sad that we missed this demonstration of diplomacy...

Putin got cold feet when he realized the world was ready to kill him.

Seems like an expensive distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. Putin is worried that a pro-democracy movement will take hold in Russia, and so he finds saber rattling a useful distraction for his regime. The pro-democracy forces get drowned out by the pro-Russia, nationalist leaning forces in the nation. I read a few years ago that the Boomer generation and older Russians liked when Putin was strong on the world stage, it made them proud, and misty eyed for when the USSR was a major world power, not a marginalized pissant country with the 11th largest GDP in the world, smaller than Canada, Italy and pre-COVID Brazil.

I wish that would work on Donald Trump. He doesn't seem to know it yet.

Trump is no longer in office.

And even though he's an evil little genocidal weasel putin (unlike trump) got where he is as the result of hard work.

You're assuming he wouldn't have a problem taking the rest of us with him.

If you think the US has any kind of effective defense against any kind of nuclear ICBM, then you're just stupid.

I'm fine with it, I want you all to die.

And you will, it's just that I would get a kick out of seeing millions die about the same time as me :)

"Trump is no longer in office"

True. But that doesn't mean he's given up.

The Arizona state senate has awarded a contract to company owned by a sleezy Trump conspiracy theorist with no experience and using sketchy guidelines with little oversight, to recount the votes in Maricopa County, in an effort to substantiate Trump's claim of fraud in the 2020 election. No members of the press are allowed in the room. Cell phones are prohibited. Arizona taxpayers are stuck with paying the estimated $50 Million cost so Trump or his hand-picked successor can use the results (a-hem) against President Biden in 2024.

It's worse than that. They plan to use the results, which they will make sure shows that Trump actually won the Arizona election (BTW, they're also 'auditing' the ballots in the Senate race as they also hope to have Mark Kelly's win declare invalid as well), to justify repeating this process in other states that Trump lost, until they get enough 'evidence' that Trump actually won, at which point they'll take it to the Supreme Court where they hope that the Conservative majority will rule that Trump won the 2020 election and remove Biden from office. If that doesn't work, there's always the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys and others of their ilk who are just waiting for the right moment to again invade Washington and bring down the government.

"at which point they'll take it to the Supreme Court "

If I was Trump I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket. The Supreme Court Justices Trump appointed have been a great disappointment to him so far.

Trump burnt his bridges with all those 60+ court challenges he already lost. The Justices aren't deaf or blind. They'll see right through this. As Chief Justice Roberts said, he's not going to allow HIS court to be used like a political football
