Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, April 23, 2021

A doctor on Reddit describes what happened when he diagnosed a Covid denier with Covid: "I'm an attending physician at our Triage Unit. On a friday, an older gentleman (60 + years) came in with his entire family (wife, sister, BIL, 2 newphes and 3 children), none of them with a face-mask. All had mild COVID symtoms except him, he was saturating 80% with evident shortness of breath. We insisted in doing PCR and a chest CAT-scan looking for COVID but he and his wife refused saying that COVID wasn't real and it was just a bacterial infection. The more we talked with him the more aggitated he got to the point that his face was red. We suggested hospitalizing him to stabilize him and start treatment, but they accused us of exaggerating his symptoms and that we only wanted to hospitalize him so we could steal the liquid in his knees (a stupid rumor that was going around when this whole thing started)."

Good question.

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. That doctor has been saving morons lives for over a year, losing sleep, losing heath, not seeing his family, terrified they could catch covid and die.

What's wrong with america's medical system is it was overrun by covid denying morons.

Really... would you be so quick to condemn an immigrant or ethnic minority with different cultural views and give a thumbs up to an unprofessional doctor who mocks them on the internet? How about someone actually suffering from mental illness... do you believe they deserve a "bullet to the brain" for their odd beliefs? You POS.

A doctor is not "fixing the problem" by behaving in a way he or she knows discourages people from seeking medical treatment. Seriously, what kind of idiot thinks bullying and shaming patients is helpful in promoting public health?

Saying covid is a hoax is not an immigrant or ethnic minority problem. It's a moronic fox news watching brainashed white person problem.

These are people who are so stupid that they deny covid exists while dying of covid. Let them die. Society is harmed by having too many stupid members. Save resources for the people who aren't killing innocents with their stupidity.

"Because he didn't humor a bunch of idiots and violate his oath by prescribing antibiotics for a viral infection?"

No, I never said that. The doctor must have known or at least suspected this family had issues about COVID when they refused to wear masks. So why would he explicitly tell them a procedure was to be done to "look for COVID"? Most professional doctors do not tell patients they are looking for a specific diagnosis when ordering a test. In this particular case, it obviously caused the patient to become uncooperative.

"Maybe I missed it but where did that happen?"

Yeah, you missed it, even though it's obvious in plain sight.

The more we talked with him the more aggitated he got to the point that his face was red.
So the idiot doctor can see that his style of talking to the patient caused him to become agitated, so he decides to double down on it. Brilliant. And then goes online to talk sheet about the patient. But hey, this is obviously "fixing" the problem, right? Nope.

I think you may be confusing his telling on reddit with what he actually said. It wasn't clear to me that he was that explicit.

In any case, it is his job to be honest with his patients.

So the idiot doctor can see that his style of talking to the patient caused him to become agitated, so he decides to double down on it.

It's called informed consent.

You can't tell a patient "I'm going to swab your sinus cavities to check for a bacterial infection" then not do it. He would have gotten his ass sued off for malpractice.

When you've got nothing else, keep sucking on those straw man arguments. A good physician could have talked to a patient in general enough terms to get them to cooperate enough to make a valid diagnosis. Instead, this doctor behaved in a way that caused the patient to leave before this could be done, which resulted in the patient's death, and then he later showed the death certificate to the widow to smugly prove he was right. Don't talk to me about malpractice in a case like this.

#41 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2021-04-23 09:14 PM | Reply

So you are saying COVID deniers are suffering from mental illness?

No, that's why he used the word "actually" which I believes means persons who have documentable mental health issues outside of denying the existence and pathology of Covid. He was only responding - in the same vein as you - challenging that no one should define another person's value, if I read you correctly.

But I disagree that the doctor was mocking someone for simply telling the truth of his encounter. It is Sentinel who is labeling the story as "mocking" which likely reflects what his unconscious mind feels about how the protagonists are described and self articulate. There is nothing that the physician writing the story said or did that demeaned the patient and his family whatsoever. The collective family's opposition to scientifically-based help and their expressed scorn towards the very doctor trying to help them only reflects poorly because the family didn't know any better due to who they chose to listen - something that has now cost them the life of the patriarch and sickened the family.

When you've got nothing else, keep sucking on those straw man arguments.

It's not a strawman. You can't mislead your patients on what you're doing.

A good physician could have talked to a patient in general enough terms to get them to cooperate enough to make a valid diagnosis.

Given the coverage COVID has had in the news do you really think he doctor could have gotten a swab of his sinus cavities without lying to him?

You're being asinine.

Instead, this doctor behaved in a way that caused the patient to leave before this could be done, which resulted in the patient's death,

The patient's own ignorance and behavior resulted in their death. Not anybody else.

and then he later showed the death certificate to the widow to smugly prove he was right.

You're making ---- up here. The contention over the death certificate was from the family.

Don't talk to me about malpractice in a case like this.

#29 | Posted by sentinel

Why can't people address information as they've seen it instead of their interpretation. You've literally inserted interpretation and assumption in place of every fact (what few there are) in this short story.

All because you for some reason want to rag on the doc instead of the idiot patient.

Why is that?

" Why can't people address information as they've seen it instead of their interpretation. "

It's funny you can say that with a straight face, after the stuff you tried to read into my comments.

I don't dispute that the patient was an idiot. That doesn't mean the doctor's behavior was sacrosanct and beyond question. If cops can be criticized for behaving in ways that result in unnecessary deaths, even when they're dealing with idiots, why shouldn't doctors too?

It seems you're just looking for an excuse to rag on me, while ignoring the idiotic "bullet to the brain" and similar comments in this thread.

But no, I don't count the doctor's behavior as "sacrosanct and beyond question." I just doubt whether the patient could have been reach without breaking ethical limitations.

So many sanctimonious know it alls. Is this the thread to mention baked in mistrust of medical establishment and the government's long abuse of the poor? Tuskegee experiment anyone? Johnson &Johnson talcum powder long running profit over people and who is making the vax? Or is this the thread to mention "white space" an internet provider term for swathes of communities where the internet companies refuse to go as the income levels are not high enough? The deck has long been stacked against the poor. Let us stop pretending it isnt. Lots of doctors are smart but are kinda douchy.
