Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

"When we first filed this bill, one of the things we were looking at is the fact that North Carolina has become a destination place for marriage " for folks who are marrying children and for sex trafficking," Sen. Danny Britt said. "What we wanted to do was come up with a bill that would take us off that list and protect these children." But on Wednesday afternoon, Britt, a Lumberton Republican, brought an amendment forward that undid the majority of that bill. North Carolina is one of two states, Alaska being the other, that allows children as young as 14 to marry.

This is a product of a by-gone era. Back when people had morals and they didnt leave marriages because of vain reasons. I have several aunts and uncles, grandparents that married at 15 and 16. Almost all of them are still married today or stayed married until death.

Jesus H Christ, Boaz. I don't think that can even happen in Texas.

What is this the 1800's?

Marriage is for people who have at least graduated high school and can drive a car.

#5 Obviously not in the great state of North Carolina. A girl is eligible for marriage as soon as she gets her period. Or before.

I'm with Boaz on this, some people can handle marriage in their mid teens. Not many it's true, and especilly now when most people are babies at 27, but still, some do marry young and it's not abuse or even bad.

Divorce in America has been falling fast in recent years, and it just hit a record low in 2019. For every 1,000 marriages in the last year, only 14.9 ended in divorce.

The U.S. marriage rate just hit an all-time low in 2019. For every 1,000 unmarried adults in 2019, only 33 got married. This number was 35 a decade ago in 2010 and 86 in 1970.

Who in the hell wants to get married anyways? Stay single you'll have less to worry about.

I disagree. A great relationship makes good things twice as good, and bad things half as bad.

You have two daughters, right Boaz?

How old are they now?

Marrying age?

Not sure why anyone would be arguing children should be getting married.

Republicans are pedophiles. They're now finally embracing it.

As long as they can drink, smoke, serve in the military, drive, get a CDL, and can work full time, what's the issue?

Pretty sure you can't do anyone those things until you're 18 and 21...

This politician is trying to make it legal for old men to bang children.

"Back when people had morals and they didnt leave marriages because of vain reasons."

Females are such vain creatures.

Here is the list of "nine things a woman couldn't do in 1971" in the post:
Get a credit card in her own name.
Be guaranteed that they would not get fired for getting pregnant.
Serve on a jury.
Fight on the front lines.
Get an Ivy League education.
Take legal action against workplace sexual harassment.
Decide not to have sex with their husband.
Obtain health insurance at the same monetary rate as a man.
Take the birth control pill

"Get an Ivy League education"?

Snoofy guess who graduated from Cornell with a bachelor of arts degree in government on June 23, 1954?

RBG

Notorious RBG!
If perhaps the point was lost on you Tor, it was harder for women to leave their husbands in the past.

#17 | Posted by snoofy at 2021-05-01 04:24 PM | Reply

You coulda just said that snoofy.

I think everyone here is aware of that.

#18 | Posted by Tor at 2021-05-01 04:34 PM | Reply

I don't think Boaz is really that aware of it.

(And MadBomber would say a wife who wants to leave her husband could just go live in the woods.)

To Boaz's point, people probably do get divorced for vain reasons. People get married for vain reasons too. If we're going to allow one, we should allow the other.

My Grandmother's way of divorcing my grandfather back in 1936 was barricading herself in the bathroom and shooting a .45 though the door when he tried to batter-ram it down.

Good times.

The older I get the less kinds of marriages I approve of.
