35 million phone numbers are disconnected every year in the U.S., according to the Federal Communications Commission. Most of these numbers are not disconnected forever; after a while, carriers reassign them to new subscribers.

Time to development ipv6 for phone numbers

I guess the current situation of [country code] + [area code] +[phone number] is the ipv4 NAT solution.

Feels like a weak way to categorize the problem+ fix as "ipv6 for telephony," considering that the majority of comms are VOIP nowadays anyway, lol.

@#1 ... the current situation of [country code] + [area code] +[phone number] ...

The area code is starting to become obsolete as an area code. It is slowly turning into ~just another three digits of a phone number~ as those with cell phones move from state to state and keep their cell phone number after they have moved.

I don't know about other states, but Connecticut has required full 10-digit dialing, even for local calls, for years now.

The old requirement of an area code having a "0" or a "1" as its center digit has also fallen to the wayside, somewhere in the mid 1990's, if memory serves me correctly.

And in the second set of three digits, having a '0' as the center digit indicated that it was the number for a cell phone. That's also a quaint tradition that has been done away with years ago.

0 or 1 used to be the second digit that was reserved for area codes.

Thanks, but for my needs, I've chosen a block from the fd::/8 range. Works well.
