Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, June 06, 2021

The right to vote is fundamental to our American democracy and protecting that right should not be about party or politics. Least of all, protecting this right, which is a value I share, should never be done in a partisan manner.

Joe Manchin requires more bribes.

He's already been paid off by the GQP.

The guy's only job in the senate is to stop Democrats.

This more than 800-page bill has garnered zero Republican support. Why? Are the very Republican senators who voted to impeach Trump because of actions that led to an attack on our democracy unwilling to support actions to strengthen our democracy? Are these same senators, whom many in my party applauded for their courage, now threats to the very democracy we seek to protect?

The truth, I would argue, is that voting and election reform that is done in a partisan manner will all but ensure partisan divisions continue to deepen.

@#2 ... DINO ...

One of the big criticisms of the GOP by Democrats is that the GOP seems to demand unfettered fealty to the GOP and fmr Pres Trump (e.g., Rep Cheney).

Shouldn't that same criticism apply here, then, if one of the Democrats in Congress decides to vote against something because it is too partisan?

... and it seems the Democrats are starting to do what they do best, self-destructive infighting...

Progressive dam about to break
www.axios.com

...House progressives are getting fed up with efforts to accommodate Republican senators -- and Joe Manchin. Look for them to start demanding swift action -- and threatening payback....

Democrats believe they have a narrow window to change voting rules at the national level, to ensure they don't get swept out of power due to Republican structural advantages.

- Many Dems believe that this moment -- when they have total control of Washington -- is extremely tenuous and fleeting....

But when the Democrats lose control in 2022, will they be sorry the killed the filibuster?

If circumstances were reversed and the repubs were looking at losing their majority, would they refuse to pass this type of legislation?

Would a fetish of bipartisan comity derail their pursuit of attaining their agenda?

Would they hamstring their own efforts from within like the Democrats are?

Or would they just pass the bill and move on?

I think Joe Manchin, knows the answer to these questions.

He's a troll, looking for a payout. Reveling in being a "Maverick" and so thoughtful about our institutions and traditions.

What a fine example of bipartisan unity in troubled times.

Sen Manchin is merely the most prominent symbol of the disaster that the Democrats are becoming for 2022.

He's currently an easy target, but he is the symptom, not the the cause.

Why Joe Manchin Is So Willing And Able To Block His Party's Goals

Trump won WV handily in 2016 and 2020, but Manchin won in 2018 there. imo... it looks like he might not win there again if he backs the Dems now.

It seems many of the idiots in this thread would rather have a full blown Republican in Manchin's seat, which means there would never, ever be a tie for VP Harris to break for anything, McConnell would still be majority leader, and Democrats would be unable to filibuster anything if they had their way.

Considering Manchin just sunk democracy with his stunt, I'm not sure it would make any actual difference, Sentinel.
Manchin the moron, believes that this will win over some Republicans on a different voter's rights bill and we'll all sing "Kum-ba-yah."
We'll see, won't we?

#20 | Posted by YAV at 2021-06-06 09:10 PM | Reply

As a resident of WV now, and a lifelong
Democrat, I hereby declare that I will
NEVER vote for Manchin again. The man is
NOT a Democrat. The party should seriously strip him of being able to run as a Democrat,
withhold ALL reelection funds, and fund someone to run against him until the man retires or dies. BUT NOT until the elections in 2022.
He is given that long to change his mind, but these are the terms he should be given. For if he doesn't change his mind, and all the voter suppression laws around the country are allowed to stand, then one more Senate seat will not matter, and we can certainly stand to get rid of such a DINO from the party. The man is a right leaning Independent at best, and likely a Republican wolf in democratic sheep's clothing, just pretending to be a Democrat. Either way, he should be tossed, and zero more dollars wasted on his reelection campaigns.

FWIW, the Chinese have a phrase called "tu bao zi".
It means:
country bumpkin
boor
unsophisticated country person (humble, applied to oneself)

One of my ex-girlfriends asked me for an English translation of it. I told her "redneck". She promptly renamed her online shop on taobao to "Redneck Store".

#25 | Posted by sentinel at 2021-06-06 10:01 PM | Reply

Mexicans also have a word called "naco", which is often derogatory and probably the equivalent of a redneck or hillbilly.

Let's be honest here. West Virginia is only, demographically speaking, 3.6 % Black. He has to recognize that his state is wildly white, and that white population is getting older and more conservative. So he is protecting his job, not democracy. Anyone who watched what the Republican Party under McConnell has done can never speak of the Republican Party as being willing to consider bipartisanship.

This says it all, including the fact that West Virginia has no cities over 100,000 and is a remarkably white and rural state.

But the bill isn't too partisan, it would protect the voting rights of just as many Republicans as it does Democrats.
No, Joe Manchin is a piece of filth who sold his soul to keep his office. Republicans are passing voter suppression bills all over the country and you try to pretend that isn't partisan?
Sorry Lamplighter, I used to agree with you often but your opinion on this is ridiculous and not connected to reality.

In other words Insurance lobbyist Joe LIeberman had good cause to prevent the public option from being passed which has cost the American people billions of dollars and prevented millions from gaining health insurance. Joe Manchin is the same animal just a little younger.
