Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, June 17, 2021

The Navy recently sent an unmanned vessel named Nomad on a trip of 4,421 nautical miles, or more than 5,100 land miles, from the Gulf Coast through the Panama Canal to the West Coast -- almost entirely in autonomous mode. It was the second long-range autonomous transit through the Navy's Ghost Fleet Overlord program, conducted through a partnership between the service and the Office of Defense Strategic Capabilities Office.

Very impressive as it sounds like it was done while independent steaming - traveling without support.

GPS guided navigation is no big deal, but I suspect it had collision avoidance systems. They Navy sure could use more of those.

Autonomous drones will be the landairmines of the future.

Talk about a low bar to cross over.

OOH we have a ship that can do things that were possible 10 years ago.

So what is the actual current tech capable of?

That's what I want to know.

@#4 ... So what is the actual current tech capable of? ...

Exactly.

Whenever I see this type of military "demo" the first thing that comes to mind is, OK, that's what they were doing a couple three years ago, what are they up to nowadays?

Who cares? The need to fight should not outweigh the needs of the people. This country is falling apart in more ways than one and drones are where we need to spend cash? Dumb. Warmongers.

There was also a recent public display/notice of a mid-air refuel by an unmanned fuel tanker.

Go back to China, comrade. And take your LesWit friend with you.

We said we would be ready for China by 2015. You have until then if you want Taiwan.

NGAD. Remember Hong Kong's pro-democracy journalists, or get cheap free organs until we find you.

Might as well get used to it.

It is the rise of the drones. Drones are here to stay. Have you seen the cost of health care and workers compensation? Drones will be doing our dirty and dangerous work in the future. Like war. And exploring dangerous far away places. They already do a lot. Like targeted assassinations.

I suspect someone will build an autonomous drone soon that can reproduce itself from the environment.

When that happens you should definitely whine.

Why not? Look at all the cash they pissed away on that stupid Zumwalt destroyer. Or the equally silly railgun?
