From the cited article...

...Although it's difficult to definitively link individual cases of cancer and disorder to a specific cause, an oncologist outside the Veterans Affairs system who reviewed Black's case determined it's the smoldering trash from the massive burn pits on US military bases -- sometimes acres in size " that will soon kill him.

"Soldiers tend to generate a lot of trash," Black told CNN. "Metals, plastics, electronics, medical waste, your uniform -- anything and everything that could be burned was thrown in the trash dump and then coated in diesel fuel and lit on fire." ...

Why do we seem to consider our soldiers as test specimens?

I do understand the need to destroy their trash and burning is about the only way in a war zone, but holy **** this isn't Vietnam and it sounds like the practice hasn't advanced since then.

They can truck in supplies and fuel, but can't truck out the garbage?

------ management by a colossally wasteful organization.

There are efficient incinerators if you have to burn bodies and stuff.

What were you doing?

"Hauling garbage to an airbase so it can be shipped by C-5 back to the US and sent to a landfill."

#7 Why fly it, contract with a local landfill.
The US Military has been spoiled with unlimited budgets. Cut it by 80% and hire people that can manage.

You're in a warzone. The first thing that stops is public services like trash and landfill management. The trash then piles up in the street and is used as cover for IEDs. There's a reason a lot of vets get PTSD from seeing garbage piles, and it's not the burn pits.

You would have to occupy and build a permanent base on a landfill just to have a place to put the trash and risk troops transporting actual garbage in huge numbers of convoys.

Or you can do like people do in rural America and just burn it.
