A 2016 document from the Sons of Confederate Veterans offering guidance on rallies, lawsuits and the media is firmly rooted in skewed Lost Cause' ideology.

Bold below mine:

The document devotes almost a fifth of its length to historical arguments which it says support its position on Confederate monuments, and the nature of what it repeatedly refers to as the "War for Southern Independence".

The arguments are drawn exclusively from a book by an early "lost cause" activist and historian . . .The book, The Southern View of the Invasion of the Southern states and the War of 1861-65, was published by Samuel Ashe in 1935. . . .

The document follows Ashe in arguing that the war was not primarily about slavery, but driven by anger at taxes imposed by a Congress dominated by northern politicians, and a fear not about the dissolution of slavery per se, but because emancipation would "devastate the capital infrastructure" in the south.

"a fear not about the dissolution of slavery per se, but because emancipation would 'devastate the capital infrastructure' in the south." IOW, it was about ending slavery and the economic impact that would have on slave owners.

Let them keep their "loser trophies".

And use them as a an indicator of who not to do business with.

I've personally fired two contractors because of tRump/confederacy ideation.

Let them starve.

The secession declarations from numerous confederate stated their intent to secede was meant to preserve states' rights that protect the institution of slavery.

The "States' Rights" folks are not wrong, they are just incomplete.

They can keep their loser trophies in museums, where they belong.

No reason to celebrate traitors, which is what the Daughters of the Confederacy were doing when they erected all those statues all those years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation.

If it is impossible to remove a statue like they are doing in some states, I'd suggest the local city keep the statue but change the base it sits on. Take away the base and replace it with 4 black people holding that pedestal up on their backs. 3 men and a woman and have the woman, while holding up that pedestal on her back, have her holding the hand of a child.

And put red paint on their backs and red streaks on the hands of all 5 of them. The red signifying blood from the whippings and the damage raw cotton does to the hands.

This way, the traitors/racists get to keep their statue but it gets held up by what it was that held that society up.

It would at least be more historically accurate.

The argument that slavery wasn't the issue that was the basis for the Civil War is patently ridiculous and stupid. It is laughable except that the institution of slavery was brutal and cruel. That argument is actually obscene.

I wonder if Virginia will also give out license tags that read "Sons of Wehrmacht Veterans", or "Ringworm Heritage", or even "Support Illiteracy"...

CATDOG, your post does deserve a compliment too. To me, one of the saddest things about the Confederacy, is that so many died defending slavery when the vast majority were poor and who never owned a slave in their life. All slavery did for them was drive down wages and kept them poor.

From the people who first brought America "WE LOVE TRAITORS!!"

Like I've said in the past here. Taken down the traitorous statues, melt them down, and make Obama peace coins ou of them, and hand them out to Trumpers.

This whole discussion is basic proof that the conservative mind is inferior. Hung up on Bill and Hillary Clinton, hung up on Obama the 1st BLACK MAN in the WHITE HOUSE. And STILL hung up on a war they lost that is over 150 years in the past...

Sounds to me like ya'll have some hangups!

I posted in the nooner, but it should go here:

Good news: Today the statue of Robert E. Lee is currently being removed from Charlottesville, VA! One small positive step.

More good news: The statue of Stonewall Jackson is now being removed from Charlottesville, VA! A second small positive step!
