More from the article...

...Paul Allard Hodgkins had pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of an official proceeding, which carries a maximum possible sentence of 20 years in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Randolph Moss ordered the sentence in a hearing, saying he was encouraged by Hodgkins's remorse over his participation in the riot, but called the events on Jan. 6 "chilling."

"Democracy requires the cooperation of the government," Moss said. "When a mob is prepared to attack the Capitol to prevent our elected officials of both parties from performing their constitutional and statutory duty, democracy is in trouble. The damage that Mr. Hodgkins and others caused that day is way beyond a several-hour delay in certification [of the election]. It is damage that will persist in this country for decades."...

The judge here did a good job mostly. He shut up Hodgkins lawyer who tried to turn it into a protest that escalated to a mere "riot". But unfortunately he didn't side with the Prosecution on the length of sentence and gave less than half what they wanted.

8 months...and this is the biggest penalty so far?

other than 1 of them getting shot on site, of course.

This is it? The biggest so far? for a violent attempt to overthrow the US government?

Geeez...I know of people who served more time for mail fraud. and most of us know of more who served more for selling weed.

@#3

If he had gotten the 20 years max penalty, would you then be screaming that it was a political retribution?

If you were the judge, what would you have sentenced him to? And why?

He plead guilty, that is something.

I expect the sovereign citizen to get less consideration.

It's going to be a hard 8 months if he's never been there before.

Personally I think he should have received at least a couple years. It's too easy to say 'I'm sorry' after the fact. Crocodile tears and all that.

At least he washed his hair before he showed up in court.

"Tommy Chong got 9 months for selling bongs."

I remember when this was announced on TV. The media initially misreported it as 9 YEARS.

He should have gotten at least the year and a half the prosecution was asking for. This is a ridiculously short sentence. At least he had to admit on the record admitting that President Biden was legitimately elected.

In a Federal prison?

I think they should be sentenced to Gitmo.

Hey, I have an idea. Maybe we could have something like mandatory minimum sentencing.

It's funny how this has brought out the the police state cheerleaders.

Just to be clear, bellringer, you don't think anyone that broke a myriad of laws on 1/6 should be held accountable for it? I'm trying to understand your position, and I am failing.

#21 | Posted by BellRinger

Considering the dubya (the worst president in history until you outdid him with trump) blew up the entire mideast, yes his body count is probably above a half million.

So to recap - the recent republican president got a half million americans killed.
The previous republicans president got OVER a half million killed, but at they weren't americans so who cares.

Your party is really on a roll. How many people do you think the next republican president can kill?

#33 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2021-07-21 12:44 PM | Reply

Totally approve of Pelosi ditching the GOP choices for the 1/6 Investigative Committee too. Absurd that over half the members selected by GOP to be on the panel, voted that Biden's win was illegitimate... Another 'intended killshot' on a committee actually tasked with trying to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again.

The GOP WANTS it to happen again!

Please D.C. Police, National Guard, the next
time the GOP marches on the Capital, for the love of God, either knock them out with gas (and take their weapons away--with a LIFETIME BAN on owning a weapon again), or shoot to kill. These people don't want to live in a Democratic Republic, they want fascist minority rule! Rule by white old fecks, and white old fecks alone! NOT a country I want to continue to live in...and a pathetically far cry from the nation I grew up in as a child, in the 1970's.

The length of incarceration aside, it is a felony conviction. He cannot purchase, own, or possess a firearm. I believe he's from Florida, so has to complete the entirety of the sentence including any post-release probation before he can vote again. There are consequences beyond the time served.
