Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In a new political low in Texas, the Republican-dominated state Senate has passed a bill to eliminate a requirement that public schools teach that the Ku Klux Klan and its white supremacist campaign of terror are "morally wrong."

I am shocked that they taught that the KKK was wrong for setting homes, businesses and churches on fire and murdering black people before this.

OF course they do.

Yay, another fake headline on the Retort. It's about as accurate as saying they dropped a requirement to teach eugenics is morally wrong, with an anti-abortion spin on it.

It's an interesting question:

Speaking on the chamber floor, state Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D) said the legislation amounts to "tying the hands of our teachers."

"How could a teacher possibly discuss slavery, the Holocaust, or the mass shootings at the Walmart in El Paso or at the Sutherland Springs church in my district without giving deference to any one perspective?," she said.

A current requirement, that students learn: "the history of white supremacy, including but not limited to the institution of slavery, the eugenics movement, and the Ku Klux Klan, and the ways in which it is morally wrong" would be dropped if the bill is passed.

I dunno, SENT.

Seems like an accurate headline to me.

The bill, passed on Friday in the Texas Senate by a margin of 18-4, removes language from a previous bill condemning White supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan. However, the bill does expressly prohibit educators from teaching that "one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex."

Also cut by the bill, requirements that students study Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech or about the work of labor leader Cesar Chavez and feminist Susan B. Anthony.

Hmmmmm

So I guess the argument from TX Republicans is that this sort of specific language should not be housed in legislation. Is that the main contention? So they'd be okay if teaching about KKK and the immorality of the group was enshrined in local curriculum, they just don't want it within the law?

Fox Fake News:

The bill comes as Republicans across the country have been speaking out about Critical Race Theory, a teaching method that has been adopted by schools and corporations nationwide that claims the United States is inherently racist.

So much misinformation in one single sentence.

It's better than them calling it "wokeness", IMO.

American history should be taught without the hysteria of perceived morality, which changes.
History is the permanent record of things past.

Texas GOP spent the last two weeks quoting MLK and then vote to strip his words from the classroom.

#11 | Posted by Nixon at 2021-07-21 07:31 AM | Reply

Yeah, the GOP has NEVER tried to rewrite history before...(rolls eyes).

You know, they LUV to call liberals snowflakes.
If anyone is a SNOWFLAKE is the Rethugs and
their insistence that 'racism not be mentioned'...
as if it never happened. Much like the Germans
after the Nazi Deathcamps in WWII.

Want to make a Republican mad? Mention either
'racist whites' or 'class warfare' in open
conversation with another. They go absolutely
---- ------- in about 1.5 seconds...

Snowflakes...one and all.

Sad retort.

"History is the permanent record of things past."

History books reflect the ideas of those who are in charge at the moment, I have read history books to slant everything to make it appear that slavery was a good institution where black people were happy to be treated worse than animals.

There are and always have been a lot of good, Christian men in the KKK. As for Mr. Marty King, I never saw much in what he said. Hell, did you know how many times that rabble rouser got arrested? If our legislation had some mistakes in it, well--we were just trying to preserve our women and our heritage. Too late to fix the bill...

Is controlling every bit of minutiae that's taught to our kids the way that Texas Republicans keep the government out of your life?

How anyone could teach about the KKK without using the term "Domestic Terrorists" is beyond me.

arent school boards in the US controlled at the local level? how is any state/fed law requiring what is/is not to be taught is legal?

#19 Same way States pass laws making it illegal for communities to do things like offer cost internet service or ban fracking.

They need to build the wall on the north side of Texas... what scum.

I guess Texas feels that 89% of the black vote going left ain't enough. They better get going on suppressing the black vote ASAP ( oh, that's right, they have been doing that since The loser ex-president got evicted.)

Teach American history without histrionics. Kids today are very much in tune with the plight of the Black man, and or any other minority.

How about teaching reading, Math? Leave moral stuff for parents.

"Teach American history without histrionics."

Teaching the immorality of lynchings is not histrionics.

#24 | Posted by danni at 2021-07-22 01:56 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

If they're going to use the word "lynching" in their lessons, then they should at least include the origins of the term. It most likely came from "Lynch Law" during the Revolutionary War, a term for punishment without trial. It did not necessarily involve death as a punishment, nor was race a factor. Insisting that it should always and forevermore be used as a racial term just because racists used that way at some other point in time is histrionics.

#25 is exactly the type of thing a Swastika Rehabilitator would say.

He moonlights as a Lynching Rehabilitator.

Hearing that the KKK is morally wrong would hurt the GQP's recruiting in this red state dung heap.

#26, maybe I should become a Snoofy Rehabilitator. That would be the most challenging if not futile cause of all.

#28 | Posted by sentinel at 2021-07-22 09:04 PM | Reply

On the one hand, GQP fervently is in favor of fighting to preserve memorial statues of Traitors from the Civil War era, but want to criminalize teaching the History behind the Civil War.

Must suck to be so ashamed of your 'Southern Cultural Heritage' that you have to make teaching History illegal.

So when do you suppose teaching kids of White Nationalists and Racist's kids that lynching black people is wrong, BOAZ.

You were quoted here recently saying that if no one talked about racism, it would go away. But now you are suggesting that leaving the moral stuff (like racism) to the parents. Racist parents teach their kids racism.

How do you resolve this paradox?
