An extraordinary effort by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas to block nominees from being confirmed to vital jobs in the State Department is creating hurdles for the Biden administration and hindering US diplomacy, according to Democrats and Republicans who spoke to CNN.

Just another example of how the senate is dysfunctional.

Individual senators have to much power. Senate rules need to change so that they function like the HOR. More would get done and the public would know where each senator stood on the issues because they would be forced to vote more often; no hiding behind the filibuster or some other senator that wanted to take the lead on an issue by gumming up the works.

Why do we even have a Senate? The upper chamber is redundant and unnecessary. The senators have too much power and bring nothing of value to the table. A unicameral legislative branch would be better and it would get these tiresome -------- out of everyone's faces once and for all.

Amend the constitution, eliminate the Senate.

"Amend the constitution, eliminate the Senate."

I agree completely. The Senate was intended, from the beginning, to empower the elites to prevent any legislation that they don't thing the people should have. It's time to reject our own "House of Lords" and have a unicameral Congress of elected representatives.

#6 | Posted by danni at 2021-07-21 12:49 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 3

The creation of the Senate during the Constitutional convention was a compromise between the delegates of the large states and the small states that didn't want to get lost in the shuffle and be virtually powerless.

And would the reader still wonder why we Texas dems consider our state to be completely dysfunctional now?

Greg "we don't give a ---- whether you live or die from Covid or lack of electricity" Abbott, Governor
Ted "Kancun and Kremlin" Cruz", professional troll and idiot, sometimes senator and wannabe president.
Dan Goeb "Patrick," right-wing talk show crazy therefore bonafide for Texas GQP, and Lt. Governor. Oh yes, and "There are more important things than living."
Ken "Insider Trader" Paxton, whose claim to fame is that he is so crooked that many of his staff quit in protest and did the whistelblower thingie. Amazingly, he has delayed his trial for two years now

#8,

It ensures a tyrannical majority doesnt just give lip service to a minority. It's called checks and balances.

You liberals really should understand that rarely does any one ideology have a blank check to just implement it's policy.

You do have to negotiate and compromise. Liberals just want to get rid of having to deal with someone who isnt liberal.

@#9 ... Dan Goeb "Patrick," right-wing talk show crazy therefore bonafide for Texas GQP, and Lt. Governor. Oh yes, and "There are more important things than living." ...

Went looking for a reference...

Texas lt. governor on reopening state: 'There are more important things than living'
thehill.com

...Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) called for the reopening of his state and the country late Monday, saying there are "more important things than living."

Patrick said on Fox News's "Tucker Carlson Tonight" that he was "vindicated" after being criticized for saying in March that he thought "lots of grandparents" across the country would risk their survival to keep the country afloat economically....

Apparently we need our Senators forced to learn American history at gunpoint if need be.

Ever noticed that other countries didn't get involved during the American Civil War?

That was because of the efforts of American diplomats.

I don't fault Cruz for his behavior. Ted is doing what Texan Trumpers elected him to do.

I blame Democrats for not using the hours of footage of Ted Cruz inciting the 1/6 insurrection to charge him treason and impeach him from Congress.

Just Cruz being a traitor to this country because he wants sanctions on a Russian pipeline to Germany. Huh, is that helping his Texas oil buddies, or perhaps the Saudis? Kremlin Cruz, a total waste of skin.

I wrote on another thread how I am unable to get the covid vaccine because of our incompetent state department. Frankly, if you can't do basic things like protecting your citizens, we probably don't need this position at all. Our money spent on the state department would be put to better use in just about any other capacity. So, please keep blocking them.

19 posts and not a single note of Cruz's demands. Ted wants Nord Stream 2 sanctions that were passed to be enforced. Allegedly.

Wtf is a Nord Stream 2 Sanction you are wondering. These are sanctions passed by Congress in January. It was lifted up by those who want retaliation against Russia for election and environmentalists opposed to pipeline construction. They overrode Trump's defense appropriations bill veto to get it done as it was tucked into that.

The Biden Administration, while having the power to implement those sanctions, has decided to waive them completely to be better friends with Germany.

He's just doing the same thing the Democrats did to Trump when he was first elected.

My stance is the same then as it is now EVERY nominee should have an up or down vote within a reasonable amount of time.

Senators having the power to put a "hold" on any nominee is detrimental to the function of the government.

That's Judges, not Ambassadors. But fair point. And of course Republicans did the same to Obama.

"Senators having the power to put a "hold" on any nominee is detrimental to the function of the government."

Well sometimes people don't want government to function.

For example, Ted Cruz voted against certifying the election.

And again my position is that every nominee should get a hearing in a timely manner. To the winner goes the spoils and whoever wins the presidency has the constitutional right to make certain appointments. Like the filibuster, holds on nominees are not explicitly mentioned in the constitution. It's simply covered under the Senates ability to make its own rules.

What a liar. And an fool. No one believes that crap especially from you.

The Qtards are not interested in negotiating or compromising

Only blocking and obstructing and delaying.

McConnell has no interest in letting Biden succeed with the democrats agenda. If you don't believe me just ask him.

"One-hundred percent of our focus is on stopping this new administration,"

With my math that leaves ZERO room for negotiations or compromise.

I agree with you 100%. It's exactly the same thing that was done 4 years ago with #RESIST. The minority party opposing everything just for the sake of opposition has been the way things have been for over 30 years.

The last time you had a president and congress held by different parties that actually worked together was in the 80's when Reagan and Tip O'Neal worked together to get a lot done.

I believe the primary factor in the polarization of the parties is that in the 90's the media became hyper partisan. TV went left wing and radio went right wing. And they became even more partisan as time passed.

That's only true for the Republican party. It started around the time of Newt Gingrich and the Contract For America. Which was also the time of the Grover Norquist Tax Pledge.

Yes, as a taxpaying US citizen I forced to endure the incompetent geriatric pretending to be president and not receive a vaccine when it is available to expats of countries like France. Well, I guess I could have just stayed living in my mom's basement poor and unemployed while complaining about the lack of job opportunities within a 10 minute walk like the leftists on here do daily, but I chose to show initiative and actually earn money. So, I understand why you want to demonize me as I know I make you feel small and like a failure for never making anything of your life.

Can't tell leftists this as they have memories similar to gold fish and are incapable to seeing how the GOP will copy their more destructive moves. See the up and down votes on judges for past reference. See the move now to end the filibuster and expand the supreme court for their next dumb ideas.

Because I have a job not conducive to a 21 day quarantine + coming to the US for 3+ weeks to get the 2 doses. The funny thing though is how bad this will blow up on the Dems. Most expats are pretty wealthy and a vast majority are very liberal, there are about 8 million of us currently. Pretty much every one of them is pissed off at this incompetence on the part of the US government spending money like it is going out of style, donating vaccines around the world, and giving it free to illegals in the US before giving it to their citizens abroad. So when it comes time to pay taxes, vote for a dem, or donate money, I don't think the Dems are going to like what happens.

You're making so much money but you can take a few weeks off?

What's your cost of living in Vietnam, ten dollars a day?

Have you considered a GoFundMe? A loan? A credit card?

Your story is wildly implausible.

#21 Snoof. He's in that position, making a demand. Your feelings of his entitlement to the demand are irrelevant. As a party it's on us to send up somebody that's better than Beto if he's going to be unseated. As a Democrat I'm more concerned with Biden telling a Democrat Congress nope, we're not implementing our sanctions against a country actively interfering in US elections, so we can be better friends with Germany by helping them economically integrate with Russia.

and from expats telling me months ago how great Vietnam was and I should move there for the pennies a day child care, etc, now Vietnam's Covid handling went to ---- and besides people not caring anymore, a major problem is vaccine access. If you want a Pfizer shot, you need to be in a position where say.. your wife's family owns the third biggest bank in Vietnam, so you can fly back to LA at your leisure to get the good stuff. Then you fly back and sit in quarantine at a luxury beach resort for two weeks, then do it all again for the second shot but with another week added for side effects before you fly back.
