As recently as 2018, Fauci celebrated the lifting of the "pause" on such research. With government in "upstream" control of funding, guidance, and publications, he argued, what could go wrong?

"The Nation" has, unfortunately, become a questionable source of real information.

This curious article seems to have no point.

Not even a good try. Fauci won't be the mechanism need for getting Trump off the hook for COVID. I'm afraid that Donald is stuck on it. Like, forever.

More from the link.

Richard Ebright, a professor of chemical biology at Rutgers, said that the Fauci-Baric model"using gain-of-function techniques in an urban center, in a lab known for its failure to maintain the highest level of safety"was like "looking for a gas leak with a lighted match."

Reach harder, angrydud. Maybe summon fake doctor to splain it to you - or not lol.

The half-truths are Rand Paul's.

Snoofy, from an epistemological standard, you're full of ----. You're partisan, through and through, and love Fauci because he made orange man look bad. I bet you dig Cuomo too. It is entirely reasonable to consider the lab leak theory as being plausible. The interesting question is whether you possess the necessary, unbridled "objectivity", to go through all of the "facts" and make an informed decision. Sadly, we'll probably never know the truth as we're surrounded by misinformation on all sides. If the height of Socrates' knowledge was to know that he knew nothing then most of us would benefit from more skepticism.

Solid and non-partisan exploration of what Paul was doing and asserted, and Dr. Fauci's answers, Snoofy. Right on the money and exactly what's needed these days.

Great link. Thank you.

what was really changing was his estimate of how much truth we could take, and when.

Ahhh so this isn't a serious column then.

I have low expectations for the rest...

I wasn't let down. The closing paragraph was trash, almost as if once this literature professor was done rehashing old, distorted information he had nothing pertinent to say.

Many in the scientific community now suggest that a lab-leak origin of Covid-19 is likelier than a natural one. The virus seems too perfect, it drills into human tissues so neatly, and no intervening adaptations have been found in nature. Anthony Fauci may be remembered, in the end, as a warning more than an exemplar: an adventurous bureaucrat in the field of scientific research who became a hero in his own eyes. The trouble begins when such a person asks for our implicit trust in return for his good intentions.

Very Trumpian. Many. Useless line

Except the virus isn't "perfect" as we're watching it adapt in real time and no, it doesn't "drill into human tissues so neatly." These are simply ignorant musings of a lay person who doesn't have any experiences with pathogens.

The last line is simply a smear. Fauci has done more good for the public at large than literature professor here has and no amount of monday morning quarterbacking will change that.

Wow. One guy and a reference to "many in the scientific community." Hard hitting piece here.

As usual you cherry pick, crow victory and then inevitably get your ass handed to you. But that's expected. You're name isn't bellrung for nothing.

and love Fauci because he made orange man look bad.

I would say the partisan one is the person offering this patently absurd notion while unironically accusing another of being partisan...

It is entirely reasonable to consider the lab leak theory as being plausible.

It is plausible. The issue, I would say, is that it's proponents over estimate how strong the hand is they're playing.

"The virus seems too perfect"

Then why did it have to mutate to Delta to become stronger?

"Anthony Fauci may be remembered, in the end,"

The end of what?
The virus is here forever now.
Forever.

"The virus seems too perfect"

Then why isn't the death rate higher than 2%?

You know, that 2% death rate is usually cited by the Trumpites as a reason not to take COVID seriously.

#13 - And that is why it is perfect!

Engineered enough so that the antivaxxers and Trumpers won't take it seriously so it will infect and kill them!

Damn you Fauci! You turned out to be a fiendishly clever fiend!

Giving Rand Paul credit for half truths is half of a truth too far.

Fauci engineered that too, in the back of a van, down by the river.

Engineered enough so that the antivaxxers and Trumpers won't take it seriously so it will infect and kill them!

Who knew that Trumptards would be too stupid to listen to doctors? Better still who knew that there would be licensed doctors and nurses that would willingly mislead the public on the virus and the vaccine? If someone would have pushed the events from 2017-2021 in a screenplay I would have said that is extreme fiction that would never happen. Yet here we are. From the obstruction to corruption to quid pro quo to the virus to injecting bleach and shoving uv lights into the body to the big lie and the attack on the capitol that they are now trying to sweep under the rug. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

"The virus seems too perfect"

No it is not. It sometimes kills its victims too fast and so ends it's own life.

Unlike aides. Perfected evolved to attack and destroy your immune system. Then it has free reign to live in your body forever. Until you die of something else that is.

#16 but even HIV isn't perfect. It's pretty difficult to contract HIV and it's very unstable in the environment.

Calling a virus perfect is dumb because by what metric is it perfect?

The closest thing to "perfect" for a virus are herpes viruses.

There's something like 16 of them. Most of them infect 90%+ of people on the planet, they cause comparatively little disease and pathology and their replication cycles are incredibly fine tuned for human hosts.

Answer: Is it possible that the reason China infections are fraction of United States & Europe is because Covid-19 was
engineered to be less transmissible for gene types that make up vast majority of Chinese population.

Question: Whats more concerning Covid-19 issue that urgently needs to be investigated?

"Calling a virus perfect is dumb because by what metric is it perfect?"

Exactly. Better said. I didn't mean that the aids virus was actually perfect. It just better than Covid. (No offense to Covid.)

"Perfect" virus does actually have sort of a definition. Here is the "meyric" you were looking for I think.

"The virus is successful when it infests as many people as possible without killing the host; otherwise it deprives itself of a way of multiplying. In this respect, SARS-CoV-2 is almost perfect."

www.news.uzh.ch

Seems SARS was even better than aids as it could have infected many more hosts before killing all the hosts.
