Seriously, to weigh how the first woman and first woman of color to become vice president is perceived, Kamala Harris' laugh may provide the ultimate gauge.

I mentioned on here about two years ago how her laugh during late night TV interviews was annoying and reminded me of Mrs. Clinton's. Playing the race or gender card against anyone who doesn't like her laughing tic will just remind people more of HRC and associate the two, which can't be good for her if she still wants to be elected President.

Listening to the compilation of her out of context laughs, I didn't find it as annoying now, so there be something to the part of the article I quote which suggests it may be the inappropriate timing or context of her laugh that's off-putting.

#7 | Posted by sentinel at 2021-07-23 10:26 AM | Reply

This is just another facet of a culture that embraces misogyny in any form it can manifest. Like deliberately not pronouncing her name right. Or who knows, maybe it's racism. Or some combination of the two.

This is the part of the article I quoted in the thread's description, before someone decided to replace it with a blatantly race-baiting part of the article:

Those who know her say Harris genuinely likes to laugh. But the laugh that's proved the most polarizing is one that some observers argue is not a laugh at all. It's her reaction, often seemingly inappropriate in the moment, when Harris is asked a question she doesn't like. She laughs, and it's hard to tell whether she is doing so to deflect, to signal she thinks the query is dumb, or both.

It's what people do about women's laugh. They whined about Hillary's laugh as well. Cl0wns need to grow the ---- up! Everyone's laugh is weird if you pay attention to them.

Trumpthedumped was too big of a narcissist to demonstrate a sincere laugh. He just repeated cliches and expected others to laugh while he made faces. That's what played out.

" But the laugh that's proved the most polarizing is one that some observers argue is not a laugh at all. It's her reaction, often seemingly inappropriate in the moment, when Harris is asked a question she doesn't like."

The exact same tactic the right used to attack Hillary Clinton. When you can't defeat ideas then attack the basic personality traits of your opponent. Precisely what they did against Hillary and I suspect we are due for a repeat with Kamala. The one thing constant in right wing discussion, never address the real problems but always go after the personality of your opponent.
Their goal is to make you dislike her as a person but never actually address the issues she talks about.

#16 | Posted by danni at 2021-07-23 12:11 PM | Reply

"Their goal is to make you dislike her as a person but never actually address the issues she talks about."

That's usually the first line of attack of most politicians, since it's usually the most effective, regardless of race or gender. Do you think they'd hesitate to make fun of a man's laugh or facial expressions?

If she's perceived as whining "they're being mean to me because I'm a colored woman", either directly or through proxies, it's not going to go well for her.

OMG, a female politician who has a sense of humor, and finds some joy in her job, burn her at the stake! Seriously, the GQP supported an obese, lying, orange died, narcissistic, girlyman for four years, all the while making excuses for his inferiority complex, his physical and mental weakness, his pure stupidity and incompetence, and convincing themselves that he was some kind of tough guy. And these hypocrites don't like Kamala's laugh? Give me a break!

There's a guy at my gym who wears a "Donald Pump" shirt with an image of Dotard's head on Arnold's body. So I bought a shirt depicting Wonder Woman knocking fat boy out. Dude didn't like that and got in my face. I asked him why the MAGAts are so unhappy with their god king's appearance that they have to build him into something he's not. I don't recall seeing unrealistic, fantasy images of Presidents Obama, Clinton or Biden on posters and tee shirts, but for some reason, the MAGAts need to make Dotard into Rambo, or Arnold. Is it because they know he's a pussified POS who has never done a hard day of work in his life? That the only calluses Dotard has ever had are on his knees from his meetings with Putin? Of course he had no answer, but because he's a roided out meathead he challenged me to a fight in the parking lot. I laughed at him, told him what I do for a living and asked him if he wanted to go to jail. He just walked away with his tail between his legs.

I have not read the complete article, but the criticism - albeit wrong - is at least valid based on my own experience.

I too, often chuckle or softly laugh when asked something that is going to require a thoughtful and often qualified or nuanced answer - something that is going to take more than a simple yes or no. Lightly laughing in this situation is more of a tick from years'-learned habit/reaction that buys time to analyze precisely how one wants to answer the question. And for me, it buys time to quickly calculating that the answer on the tip of my tongue is indeed one that will not be misconstrued or taken wrongly by the person asking.

My daughter brought it to my attention because I instinctively do it to her and it hurts her feelings and created anxiety from even approaching me - something I NEVER had the intention of doing. I can see how others view Kamala in a similar light when she does it. Personally, in my mind I never equated my tick as something others would find offensive. I thought it was something along the lines of verbalizing "you know" when trying to articulate your next sentence. But since my daughter's reaction, I'm more aware and try to catch myself since it does have an off-putting effect on other people. But my intent has always been to provide the needed answer and context in the most respectful way possible, and it's still weird that others can perceive the complete opposite from a fairly benign reaction.

I also do the "soft chuckle" when asked a question. It can mean a lot of things, usually irony, such as, "funny you should ask me that, I was just thinking about it the other day", or funny you should ask me that because nobody ever does and I' I can't wait to answer" or preemptive, ""this is going to be funny because my answer will surprise you". But I realize someone who is a little nervous or insecure might read it as" that's a ridiculous (or stupid) question, I can't believe you are asking me that".

"I also do the "soft chuckle" when asked a question. It can mean a lot of things,"

For me the chuckle usually means: "Where do I begin?!?" or "Oh man, you don't know the half of it." That's how I'm usually inclined to interpret what some deem Kamala's inappropriate laughter.

#43 | Posted by Gal_Tuesday at 2021-07-23 08:10 PM | Reply

Often a laugh, a chuckle, or a thoughtful hmmm is a time filler while your gather your thoughts. Politicians are trained early to avoid dead air, there is nothing more uncomfortable for your interviewer and the audience than dead air while you consider how you want to answer a question. Just think about how uncomfortable some of these TV Zoom interviews have been during COVID when the guest has forgotten to unmute, or they didn't hear the question and sit there with and expectant look on their face. You will see some politicians start by thanking the interviewer for the question, some have a standard three or four word preface, but that gets old quickly. I'm more of a hmmm type, but that's because I don't like my laugh. However, in many/most of those clips, Kamala seems to be honestly having a good laugh. At least she has a sense of humor, Dotard had none and I doubt he has ever really laughed except at other people's misfortunes. He's one of those guys who when normal people look away when somebody breaks their leg or blows out their knee during a sporting event, he laughs and points.

I'm sitting at a Chicago concert right now with a friend of over 30 years and I have to admit that is one of the nicest things anyone has said in the almost 20 years I've been here. Thank you. My daughter is my heart in so many ways and I'm blessed to have her. When she told me that it broke my heart even though she's a diva, lol. She put herself through nursing school and now makes more than I do salary wise, though I eclipse her with my bonus.

I try to be open, honest and understanding here and I truly appreciate what has been said about me above. Bottom line, I do care deeply for all of us and only want everyone to live their best lives above all else. Find happiness and the rest usually falls into place.

At one time I really liked Kamala enough to support her for president. Then she blew it in one week during the Kavanaugh investigation. She put out series of quotes from Kavanaugh's briefs and used them to skewer him on his "positions"on various controversial issues. What she didn't reveal is that the quotes were NOT Kavanaughs positions at all. He was summarizing the positions of the litigants in the cases he was writing about.

It was a clever tactic, but one of the most dishonest and manipulative things I have ever seen a politician do.
