The coronavirus could be "just a few mutations potentially away" from evolving into a variant that can evade existing COVID-19 vaccines, CDC director Rochelle Walensky said Tuesday.

MFA:

The best way to stop coronavirus deaths and severe illness is to roll out vaccines quickly. However, the researchers concluded that the chance a vaccine-resistant strain will emerge is highest in a scenario that combines three conditions: First, a large portion of a population is vaccinated, but not everyone. Second, there's a lot of virus circulating. And third, no measures are in place to curb potential viral transmission from vaccinated people. Sound familiar?

Before the rise of Delta, which is now responsible for more than 80% of US coronavirus cases, that situation wasn't a concern because research suggested vaccinated people weren't likely to transmit other versions of the virus. But according to a CDC study released Friday, vaccinated people may transmit the Delta variant just as easily as the unvaccinated.

On May 1 @CDCgov stopped tracking breakthrough infections unless hospitalized. That was a mistake then, but with the increased risk posed by Delta, it's more serious. Complete tracking needs to be reinstated, w/ demographics, PCR Ct results, samples for neutralizing antibodies...

And sequencing as much as possible to determine further evolution of Microbe. We need to know ASAP whether and in whom boosters would be needed. Haven't we had enough of flying blind in this country?

Nursing home COVID infections are rising

While absolute numbers still low, they are up 3X over past month and highest since March

And we need a national strategy to prevent more suffering in this very vulnerable population

Why are they rising and what can we do?

"Only one path to herd immunity and it isn't vaccinations."

Completely false.
Vaccines are the only way herd immunity has ever been achieved.
The only way.

It's as I've always said, and as recently as yesterday in this forum, "Mother Nature always wins in the end".

Captain Trips, anyone?

This isn't remotely Captain Trips.

But Captain Trips or something sort of like it is coming, there's no stopping it.

We'll be culled whether we like it or not.

We could maybe mitigate it - but "muh freedumbs".

LOL

If you had a point in posting that link, it would help to make it so that people don't have to guess at what point you were trying to make.

All I see when I read it is it reinforces both Snoofy's and Billy Boy's posts.

#12 From the Mayo Clinic link:

Natural infection

Herd immunity can be reached when enough people in the population have recovered from a disease and have developed protective antibodies against future infection.

However, there are some major problems with relying on community infection to create herd immunity to the virus that causes COVID-19:

Reinfection. It's not clear how long you are protected from getting sick again after recovering from COVID-19. Even if you have antibodies, it's possible that you could get COVID-19 again.

Health impact. Experts estimate that in the U.S., 70% of the population--more than 200 million people--would have to recover from COVID-19 to halt the pandemic. This number of infections could lead to serious complications and millions of deaths, especially among older people and those who have existing health conditions. The health care system could quickly become overwhelmed.

IOW, herd immunity isn't the panacea you portray it to be.

"However, in essence, I've also been saying to human effort to combat the virus through flawed vaccines, a patchwork of bumbling roll-outs with bad timing, and a deeply divided populace... It's the perfect script for a disaster movie!"

You might not have noticed, but we're already living in a disaster movie.

"a patchwork of bumbling roll-outs with bad timing"

That's no way to talk about Operation Warp Speed!

That's a good thing that Trump did. He used handouts to make a vaccine. I couldn't say how much it moved the needle, but I'm sure it served as a thumb on the scale.

Imagine, a patchwork of bumbling roll-outs with bad timing happening, after the President of the United States abdicates his leadership role and says the pandemic is fifty Governor's problems.

"A patchwork of bumbling roll-outs with bad timing."

Put that on America's grave.

Between Fox News constantly spreading anti-vaccine paranoia and idiots sharing stupid conspiracy theories on Facebook, the idea of getting enough people vaccinated to end this pandemic is starting to look impossible.

What's the end game here for the Murdochs and others profiting off misinformation? They're killing their own audience and damaging the economy.

Nursing home COVID infections are rising

Most every resident in nursing homes have gotten their jabs.

It is the COVIDiot workers who are refusing the jabs.

It is time for nursing homes to mandate the vaccine to protect their residents.

Smallpox and Polio were not eradicated through natural infection herd immunity.

What's the end game here for the Murdochs and others profiting off misinformation?

Murdoch got vaccinated BEFORE the Queen of England. It could be they are running their network like every CEO runs their business, with a focus only on the next quarter. It could be they are banking on an endless supply of uneducated dolts stupid enough to believe their lies.

Thanks to Dotard and the Deniers.

"It's just the flu!!"

"15 cases soon to be zero."

613,000 dead. And still counting.
