The Soviet scientists who cultivated it seemed so excited and proud of their discovery, but didn't think about the long term effects.

When Soviet scientists wanted to melt the Arctic

Between the 1930s and 60s some Soviet scientists had ideas about transforming Russia's north into a garden by artificially melting the arctic ice. None of their ideas ever materialized.

That's actually a great idea. We have hogweed issues here in the US as well. Awful stuff and as the article says Sosnowsky's hogweed is about as bad as they come.
