Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, August 12, 2021

A few hundred protesters lined the sidewalk Monday outside Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego to rally against California's impending vaccination mandates for health care workers. And to the disappointment of many medical professionals, some of the protesters were nurses wearing hospital scrubs. It was the kind of protest that was common earlier in the pandemic but lost steam this year as restrictions eased. But a resurgent coronavirus and sluggish vaccine uptake have led to a push for vaccination mandates and masking rules " and renewed protests. Vaccination mandates have given new focus to some Covid deniers and anti-vaccination activists, helping to align disparate "liberty" groups around a single cause, as lockdowns did earlier in the pandemic. Among them are nurses who have been vocal opponents of various pandemic mitigation efforts, some of whom have become adept at garnering social media attention, mainly on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

From the cited article...

..."It's not that the nurses necessarily themselves have a really big reach, but their videos always seem to be found by people who are anti-vax, who then duet or reshare it and use the credibility of that medical professional to bolster the argument that they've been correct all along," said Rachel Moran, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public who studies misinformation on the internet....

There is an antivax protest a block from our hospital this afternoon. It is expected that some nurses and other staff may join them. If they walk off the job should they be summarily discharged? Admin is actively discussing it now.
Multiple major health care systems have already mandated vaccinating as a condition of employment. Several staff on one of the units I am marginally associated have threatened to leave if we do so. Not sure where they would go, unless they give up their careers.

Over 800 physicians call on DeSantis to repeal anti-mask order in schools

...More than 800 physicians signed a letter[1] on Thursday calling on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to repeal an executive order that prohibits local officials from requiring masks in school. ...

What they're saying: DeSantis' executive order "exposes every child to a virus that is deadlier than the flu, as contagious as smallpox and preventable with two basic mitigation measures: Mask use and vaccinations," the doctors said.

- - "What's heartbreaking and infuriating for us as doctors is watching children needlessly suffer while Gov. DeSantis rejects simple protections such as masks and vaccinations."...

My niece, who is a nurse and works in a hospital, is an anti-vaxxer. So is her husband, who is in the National Guard. So far she hasn't been required to get the covid vaccine. Will he be required to now that the Dept of Defense is mandating it? They are sending their kids to school at the church to go to, so need to worry about vaccinations there.

I'm pretty sure in California that the choices for some in critical professions are getting vaccinated Or get weekly tests.

In the past, to comply with Federal DOD mandates, a N.G. member would have to be placed on federal orders. I am not sure how it would be handled now if a NG member refuses to be vaccinated. If a company commander ordered it, would it be a lawful order that you would be compelled to obey? That will get sticky, we had fewer protections and benefits when under state orders vs federal orders.

Years ago my unit was designated for Smallpox, either boosters for us old farts or primary for the youngsters. Not one refused inspite of the pictures we showed of potential reactions.

Workers getting weekly tests should be required to pay for the tests and quarantine (without pay), if they test positive.

California - Statewide teachers(and staff)either need to show proof of vax or get weekly tests.
In LA County, you get tested every week regardless of vax status.
Restaurants and bars are increasing requiring proof of vax or negative test to enter.
Surprisingly, LiBRUl California has no desire for another shut-down. Just do your damn part, for chrissakes.

Who cares.

Nurses aren't given in depth instruction on microbiology or immunology anyway and if they're pushing the same misinformation they're only showing they're uninformed idiots.

Hell, I had a nurse tell me to my face she wouldn't get the vaccine because she didn't want Bill Gates tracking her. She started going off on a 'COVID isn't really that bad' screed with all the usual misinformation but I quickly corrected her on the major falsehoods she just listed, she asked how I knew what I stated and I told her I'm a viral immunologist.

Conversation ended reallllly quickly after that and she stared at her phone the rest of the time they were at the bar we were sitting in.

Nurses are equipped for manual disimpaction.
That is where they get these ideas.

Any nurse who is an anti vaxxer at this point is too stupid to be in their job. They need to find something else to do.

I really don't care what a bunch of people who got an AA degree at best and spend most of their time emptying bedpans think.

We did the same. Had some threaten to leave. They were given an option to apply for open work from home positions where they would have no patient contact. A few took that opportunity. The rest took the shot just like they do every year with the flu vaccine. I'm not aware of anyone who actually quit over it. I'm guessing all of the other big providers in my area now adopting the same policy may have something to do with that.
