William Saletan: Mike Pompeo, Donald Trump's former secretary of state, blames President Joe Biden for the chaos in Afghanistan. ... Like many other Republicans who now profess anguish over the Taliban's victory, Pompeo supported the U.S. withdrawal. But he didn't just endorse the pullout; he directed it. He cut a deal with the Taliban to remove all American troops and to release Taliban fighters from Afghan prisons. He vouched for the Taliban's assurances, even as the insurgents staged hundreds of deadly attacks. And he defended the ongoing troop withdrawals, undercutting the Afghan government in its own talks with the Taliban, as the militants besieged provincial capitals.

Yeah.

It's what republican dirtbags do.

It's what their voters want.

The world watched while Fat Mike negotiated with terrorists and cut a deal in the mold of so many cut by his fascist boss, i.e., so bad that the terms were laughable by those on the other side of the negotiating table. The Afghan government was required to let loose thousands of opposition fighters and had no seat at the table. The Afghanis were stuck coming and going--told what to do, with no say in the matter.

Why did the last guy's administration do this work and strike this deal? They thought (1) that getting US troops out of the region would help seal Trump's re-election, and (2) Trump thought that he would win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Trump and Pompeo were working not for the betterment of world and peace in the region, but for personal gain.

Is the Biden Administration to blame for the way the pullout has been executed? Yes. Was the departure of a US presence a surprise? No. Folks on the ground and around the world simply assumed that Diamond Joe would ignore what the previous guy's negotiators worked out. After all, who was going to complain but the terrorist thugs that make up the Taliban. Biden has been watching this situation for some time, recognized the futility in keeping the US military there, made a promise tied to actions of the preceding administration, and executed that promise.

Pompeo, a member of the Red Tie Brigade, is trying to save his political reputation. Too bad he did his work in the open. Pompeo is a liar who struck a lousy deal, and after his deal was put into action--and chaos ensued--he is trying to disavow any knowledge of his own being. It will not, and if anyone thinks otherwise, let's roll the tape...

I love how the right says the mainstream media is left wing, yet hardly anyone in the mainstream media is pointing out how trump negotiated this surrender, and actually scheduled it to happen sooner. They're all just saying "Is biden's withdrawl going to hurt his poll numbers"

Could have just stopped with that.

Just Pompeo?

All the righty pearl clutching over Afghanistan is just another example of their utter shamelessness.

Has anyone seen a recent pic of old Mike Pomp.? He is now tan, lost a few lb's, and his hair is an odd shade. He kinda looks like a bizarro trump! My money is on him running.

I have noticed, and I gotta ask...

Why are Republicans reacting so negatively to a takeover of government in Afghanistan, yet they seem to actively support, even encourage, a similar takeover attempt in Washington, D.C.?

Why? They need anything that they can call a mistake for political gain and branding. Never mind that war by definition is unpredictable- they are selling they could have done better. The r's want to be the party of "tough guys who know how to manage the military". Never mind that we have been at war 20 years.

Twenty years, billions of dollars, millions of hours of training but the Afghani troops threw down their weapons and refused to fight for their country. So, let's all blame Joe Biden? Sorry, that dog just won't hunt. I have to wonder, why were American soldiers so much more willing to risk their lives defending Afghanistan than the Afghan soldiers were? I think Biden has said it pretty straightforwardly, America needs to stop defending any nation that is too cowardly to defend itself. We gave them everything they needed but they were simply cowards. Nothing he could have done would have changed that. Not one single one of their soldiers should be granted any sort of a visa to enter the United States, too cowardly to fight against the Taliban then fine, stay there and die. Other civillians who cooperated with us should all be granted visas to other nations including the U.S. but not the soldiers who threw down their weapons and ran.

Instead of storming the airport like 10's of thousands of Afghanis are doing, they should be storming the castle, in my opinion.

The logistics of where those planes carrying thousands of evacuees are going to land must be staggering.

But Joe Biden is the President of the United States and that alone is the most powerful resource in the world. As ugly as it looks right now and in spite of all the right wing bellowing, I have a feeling he's going to pull this off in style. And maybe even rub Trump's nose in that Nobel Prize award.

Pompeo is Lying About Afghanistan

Of course he is. His lips are moving.

The republicl0wns are upset because what the Taliban did so easily to Kabul is exactly what they wanted to do on Jan. 6th in DC.

This is basically a temper tantrum about "how come the Taliban get to do it and we don't" scenario. Thenmmmmm to cap it off... they (we) are now compelled to take in Muslim refugee immigrants... after Trumptidumped said no mo muzlimZ!

That has got to sting.

Pompeo's lips don'f have to be moving for you to know that blob is lying. He just has to be breathing.
