The explosion outside the airport in Kabul was at one of the entry gates and appears to be a suicide attack, according to three US officials. There have been crowds of Afghans at the gates trying to gain access to the airport. President Biden has been briefed on the explosion outside Kabul airport, a White House official says.

Russia: 2 suicide attacks outside Kabul airport; 13 dead
apnews.com

...At least 13 people died and 15 were wounded, according to Russia's Foreign Ministry, which gave the first official casualty count. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby also confirmed the blasts, saying one was near an airport entrance and another was a short distance away by a hotel.

The U.S. official said members of the U.S. military were among the wounded. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing operations.

Even as the area was hit, the official said evacuation flights continued to take off from Kabul airport, which Western governments earlier warned was a target.

One explosion went off in a crowd of people waiting to enter the airport, according to Adam Khan, an Afghan waiting nearby. He said several people appeared to have been killed or wounded, including some who lost body parts.

Several countries urged people to avoid the airport earlier in the day, with one saying there was a threat of a suicide bombing. But just days " or even hours for some nations " before the evacuation effort ends, few appeared to heed the call....

First it's Taliban.
Second the Taliban and our Marines were working together to provide security at these checkpoints that were attacked. The Taliban were attacked as well. This is an uneasy but working truce.
Third, the Taliban and ISIS-K are enemies.
Fourth, you have absolutely no evidence, nor any reason to say the Taliban were complicit in this attack. That makes absolutely no sense. The Taliban want us out as quickly as possible.
Fifth, Biden is listening to the Military leaders.
Sixth, he's been doing that from the beginning, unlike Trump. Good god. Trump's generals were in open revolt against him for his nonstop misuse of the Military.

...An Afghan official says at least 60 Afghans were killed and another 143 were wounded in the attack outside Kabul airport. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief media. U.S. officials say 12 military service members were also killed in the attack outside the airport.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP's earlier story follows below.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) " Two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans flocking to Kabul's airport Thursday, transforming a scene of desperation into one of horror in the waning days of an airlift for those fleeing the Taliban takeover. At least 22 people were killed and dozens wounded.

The dead include 11 Marines and one Navy medic, according to two U.S. officials. They said another 12 service members were wounded and warned the toll could grow.

One of the bombers struck people standing knee-deep in a wastewater canal under the sweltering sun, throwing bodies into the fetid water. Those who moments earlier had hoped to get on flights out could be seen carrying the wounded to ambulances in a daze, their own clothes darkened with blood.

A U.S. official said the complex attack was believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State group. The IS affiliate in Afghanistan is far more radical than the Taliban, who recently took control of the country in a lightning blitz and condemned the attack....

Afghan conflict: US and Taliban sign deal to end 18-year war (Feb 2020)
www.bbc.com

...The US and the Taliban have signed an "agreement for bringing peace" to Afghanistan after more than 18 years of conflict.

The US and Nato allies have agreed to withdraw all troops within 14 months if the militants uphold the deal.

President Trump said it had been a "long and hard journey" in Afghanistan. "It's time after all these years to bring our people back home," he said.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban are due to follow.

Under the agreement, the militants also agreed not to allow al-Qaeda or any other extremist group to operate in the areas they control.

Speaking at the White House, Mr Trump said the Taliban had been trying to reach an agreement with the US for a long time.

He said US troops had been killing terrorists in Afghanistan "by the thousands" and now it was "time for someone else to do that work and it will be the Taliban and it could be surrounding countries".

"I really believe the Taliban wants to do something to show we're not all wasting time," Mr Trump added. "If bad things happen, we'll go back with a force like no-one's ever seen."...

First, I've been married to a smart, beautiful, engaging woman who is my best friend and more than my equal for nearly a decade, and our sex life is just fine.

Second, I picked the handle because at the time I was reading the Dark Tower series of books by Stephen King, and thought Roland Deschain was an excellent example of what a police officer should be. What is ISIS-K? Islamic State group's affiliate behind Kabul airport attack
www.nbcnews.com

...The terrorist group behind the Kabul suicide bombing Thursday that killed U.S. Marines and dozens of others and derailed the ongoing Afghan evacuation is a competitor of the Taliban " and even more extreme.

The Islamic State Khorasan, or ISIS-K, is the Afghan offshoot of the Islamic State terror group, which publicly beheaded foreign journalists and inflicted brutalities on captured Kurds and others in Iraq and Syria.

"They have a higher proclivity to target civilians they regard as infidels," Seth G. Jones, a counterterrorism expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said of ISIS-K....

nd the ISIS-K attack wasn't just aimed at the Americans, it was also meant to embarrass the Taliban, the experts said.

"This attack will look bad to the West, but it makes the Taliban look as if they are not in control of their own environment," said Raffaello Pantucci, senior fellow at the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. "It undermines the idea that they rule this place."...

How stupid are you?

We have already lost 2,448 soldiers and 3,846 U.S. contractors in Afghanistan. And you want to pretend a suicide bombing is because Biden is weak? What caused the other the 6,294 deaths? Magic?

And this is after Trump/Pompeo surrendered and gave the Taliban EVERYTHING while we got NOTHING. That was truly weak.

And if security was outsourced to the Taliban, why the hell were US troops killed in the attack? If US security was further out, they would have blown the bomb up there instead and we'd still have dead soldiers.

In my experience, the one thing that tended to bring the former GIROA and the Taliban together was a shared hatred of ISIS.

There were numerous occasions where they collaborated in military actions against ISIS-K.

And I get the feeling that this is the first time that many in the US have actually heard that term. ISIS-K.

Pentagon Expects' More Attacks After 12 Americans Killed In Kabul
breakingdefense.com

...A dozen American servicemembers were killed by a coordinated terrorist attack on Kabul's airport, but a top US officer said the Afghan evacuation mission will continue " even as he is prepared for further attacks in the coming days.

Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the head of US Central Command, confirmed the deaths and added that 15 other servicemembers were injured in the attacks. McKenzie said he did not have a total for civilian casualties, but local reports have put the death toll around 60, with more than 100 injured....

"We've been clear all along that we're going to retain the right to operate against ISIS in Afghanistan, and we are working very hard right now to determine attribution, to determine who is associated with this cowardly attack, and we're prepared to take action against them," McKenzie said. "24/7, we are looking for them."...

McKenzie placed blame for the attacks on the ISIS terrorist group, saying the threat of another attack is "extremely real," adding "We believe it is this desire to continue those attacks and we expect those attacks to continue, and we're doing everything we can to prepare for those attacks."

At several points during the half hour press conference, McKenzie highlighted concerns that ISIS is seeking to get a vehicle-based suicide bomb onto the airport where almost 6,000 American servicemembers are managing the evacuation effort. He also mentioned a desire to "lob" rockets into the airport, but stated his belief that anti-rocket systems in place will be able to neutralize that threat....

The biggest difference I see in this place and other left wing sites is that it is usually the rightwingers who are the --------. The ones here are pretty well behaved, and it's the leftwingers who act like --------. Bruce's last post is a prime example. I have said nothing derogatory to him today or ever, yet he engages in name calling. And it's not his first time to do this to me.

I think this place doesn't have many liberals, though. They are mostly progressives. I think that may be why they act as they do. Real liberals are more tolerant and less likely to engage in insults. They are more likely to engage in real debate. The other sites I haunt have real liberals.

So that's my theory to explain the behavior of the leftwingers on this site.

Hey, don't come here aplonkin. You like it here or you don't, no skin off of our nose. Have yet to hear an amazing post of life changing wisdom yet.

You should have been here for the wild west days.

Or maybe you were. Aunt Gracie would call you a sock puppet if you were.

Either way you ain't gonna change the world here.

It's supposed to be fun.

Drone strike, ISIS-K planner was the target and is reported killed.

Yav, aren't you the one one who chastises Gracie for seeing sock puppets? Or am I thinking of someone else. If so, I apologize.

I have criticized her because everyone is a sock-puppet to her. I'm a sock-puppet to her, even though I've been posting here using only this one name for 20 years and never have had any other name or account.

"Hey, don't come here aplonkin. "

So if you find someone or something distasteful and you have the power to avoid it, you don't? Sorry, I'm not a "Thank you sir may I have another" masochist. Maybe you are, and bully for you. Do what you want. But don't order me how to live.

And I'm supposed to take orders from someone who has insulted me several times even though I've never spoken an ill word to them? Well, now I am. Go ---- yourself, Bruce.

"Sorry, I'm not a "Thank you sir may I have another" masochist."

Yes you are, or you wouldn't have come back.

"It's supposed to be fun."

Exactly. And I do not find name calling and trolling fun. More power to you that you do, Bruce.

Another killfile.

I come here to debate people, not to listen to childish and unprovoked name calling.

Bye, Bruce.

I'm sure Bruce is devastated, Jakester.

I don't care if he is or not, Yav.

I can still see you lol.

So basically ... ten posts dancing around the answer, without addressing the direct question:

Have you ever posted under any other names, and if so, which ones?

It's not a tough question, unless the answer is embarrassing.

"I've been wished into the cornfield."

Nullifidian had a few great contributions, that line was one of them.

it's from the twilight zone.

"I can't believe you're this intent on "winning"."

A classic Goatman line.

Notice he killfiled me before answering my direct question.

Forgive me all, if I only refer to Goatman as Goatman going forward. Since he's plonked me, I'm sure he won't notice.

Danforth, you're not wrong. We get it.

25 lb suicide vest killed all those people. It was loaded with shrapnel ...

#191 It is, but he used it well.

It is a weird thing that happens to white guys as they get older. They kind of stop being who they were and their personality devolves into a litany of right-wing memes.

We might be seeing the same thing happen to "Jakester."

Why would he come back, with Groucho Marx glasses on, and think that would work?
