Notre Dame is fighting on behalf of its mascot. The school's Fighting Irish leprechaun is the fourth-most offensive mascot in college football, according to a recent survey.

For those who don't understand why this is stupid as hell read up on the history of Irish Americans and Notre Dame.

Yeah, we know they're all too drunk to care.

More from the article...

...Here's what Notre Dame said:

"It is worth noting ... that there is no comparison between Notre Dame's nickname and mascot and the Indian and warrior names (and) mascots used by other institutions such as the NFL team formerly known as the Redskins. None of these institutions were founded or named by Native Americans who sought to highlight their heritage by using names and symbols associated with their people."

In their defense, Notre Dame also noted that Irish culture has been a huge part of the school's fabric since it was founded.

"Our symbols stand as celebratory representations of a genuine Irish heritage at Notre Dame," the school added, "A heritage that we regard with respect, loyalty and affection."

In describing the history of the mascot's name, Notre Dame explained that "Fighting Irish" highlights how resilient Irish people are.

"In both the upraised fists of the leprechaun mascot and the use of the word 'fighting,' the intent is to recognize the determination of the Irish people and, symbolically, the university's athletes," the school said....

@#4

The snowflake pendulum has swung too far to the left these past couple of years.

Next it will swing too far to the right, though not as far to the right as last time.

Then, back to the left, again not as far.

Eventually it will come to a near-rest in a suitable center area.

"leprechauns are people?"

I can't answer this question because I don't subscribe to the concept of the supernatural.

But I'll put this out there: Leprechauns are people in much the same way that a believer in Christ believes Jesus is a person, no?

Could you tell the difference between a leprechaun and a person dressed like a leprechaun?

The gulf between the rich and poor is measurably worse than it was during the great depression, for starters.

The number of gun related deaths (mass shootings, and cops killing black men) is way up.

The deficit is bigger.

We just had an insurrection started by the last president.

People are eating horse de wormer instead of taking vaccines.

Well they are both facts.

I tell all the people in my business there are hard facts and soft facts. There are the facts such as data....and then how you feel about those facts. Both determine our reaction to events.

I work in a business where 150 bad things happen every year....and about 9 things go good.

Nobody can give you a positive attitude. You have to do it yourself. Not be spoon fed happiness.

I think a lot of people believe they are entitled to have their happiness provided to them....they deserve it.

#32 | POSTED BY EBERLY

Most people are more stressed about things, since the start of the pandemic. For some, since Nov 2016; especially anyone who doesn't fit the Trumper demographic.

I think one of the most interesting phenomenon of the Trumpers is that even when Trump won, Trumpers were just as angry as ever. In fact they became even angrier. Especially when the pandemic rolled around, they found new reserves of anger, and new reasons to be angry.

But, even before that: They got what they wanted. Republicans controlled both houses of Congress and the White House. But it didn't bring them any happiness.

#34 | Posted by snoofy at 2021-08-26 05:20 PM | Reply

#30 Interesting, I would never have guessed that. You seem so... level-headed.

#35 | Posted by snoofy at 2021-08-26 05:22 PM | Reply

Snoofy- I think at some base level trumpers and especially trumper boomers know that the white supremacy party is coming to its end.

Hence the anger.

#36 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2021-08-26 05:23 PM | Reply

No doubt Trumpers have chosen to lie in a bed of despair over things. Things that aren't bad....but they're convinced they are.

People have a lot to be grateful for. Yes, there are obstacles and ugliness out there. It's a rough and mean world.

But again, I could have said that at any time. Not just now.

Even drunks in a bar can talk about football without bringing up Trump or Biden. If they can do it, surely the folks here can talk about leprechauns without dragging something completely unrelated to the subject -- like Trump - into it.

I can't stand Trump but I am able to avoid talking about him when the subject is leprechauns. But he is so imbedded in some people's brains, they can't help themselves. "Leprechans?" "Well, what about Trump?" LOL As I said, if he knew, he would be very pleased given his extreme narcissism.

I think the whole thing is fabricated. The links to the survey dead end on "most offensive". The Army Mule is runner up for most sexy, and maybe someone ought to talk to someone about that. But nothing on most offensive outside what is claimed by the intern in the linked article. The kid that wrote the piece pumps out 8-10 stories a day. Many with a similar poorly sourced, no-names-on-the-record style.

I know Americans of Irish descent who think of leprechauns in a positive way. This is not, in my experience, the way of things among those who live where leprechauns allegedly hang out. There, the wee folk are regarded as an absolute menace to be avoided at all costs. Even speaking of them is avoided - culturally ingrained to the point of being almost reflexive in the way of knocking on wood.

I'm significantly Irish and am absolutely not offended by the 'Fighting Irish' moniker or the leprechaun. I root for Notre Dame's opponent in every game they play because they're a catholic institution espousing catholic principles. It's the political actions of religious institutions attempting to force others to abide by their religious beliefs which I find offensive.

I'm also offended by people making fun of and making remarks concerning other people's large reproductive endowments. As someone who has been biologically cursed with a rather prodigious and profusive phallum, insensitive remarks by those on public beaches and lavatories- and even primary care providers and their associated nurses- are greatly hurtful and have lowered my quality of life considerably. A full ban on all allusions/jokes/remarks/insinuations/ribbing/innuendo should be implemented in colleges, universities and Speedo swim outlets around the country and would be greatly appreciated by poor suffers such as myself.
