Paul Waldman: Democrats look like they're the ones with the greater share of political power in America today, holding both the White House and Congress. So why do they so often seem weak and ineffectual, while Republicans ruthlessly employ every shred of power they have?

In Congress, a couple of key Democrats, especially Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), proclaim their intention to sabotage the party's agenda if it isn't drastically pared back, lest anyone think it's too "partisan." They could unshackle themselves from the filibuster and actually do what they were elected to do, but they choose not to.

Meanwhile, Republican-run states are rushing to create a far-right dystopia where every customer at your local supermarket is packing heat, school boards and election boards are run by QAnon lunatics, mob rule is valorized and institutionalized, voting rights are dramatically restricted, and abortion is outlawed.

And they're doing it with the help of a conservative Supreme Court majority that barely bothers to pretend that it cares about precedent, the Constitution, the law, or anything other than remaking America to conform to its ideological agenda.

We're seeing what a profound difference there is in how Democrats and Republicans view power. When Democrats have it they're often apologetic, uncertain, hesitant to use it any way that anyone might object to. Republicans, on the other hand, will squeeze it and stretch it as far as they can. They aren't reluctant and they aren't afraid of a backlash. Whatever they can do, they will do.

The second I saw this article I immediately thought of Retort posters who sing from this hymnal every single day. And in truth, they're not wrong, but politics is not always a zero sum game when your constituency doesn't overtly hate and demonize everyone who disagrees with them.

I too wonder if Democrats will squander this moment and then become relegated into obscurity - if not outright criminality as Republicans rewrite laws and regulations to the point any objection to their policies might bring jail sentences for their political opponents. At this point, I put very little faith in the GOP coming back from the cliff and conferring any notion of comity and legitimacy upon Democrats among their increasingly rabid and mad supporters.

Republicans are shredding the parts of the Constitution meant to constrain them while championing other parts which empower their base and its often violent desires. Democrats better wake up and fight fire with fire before it's too late.

--------- is self limiting. The repubs will destroy themselves eventually. They will push too far. Sooner or later, possibly later, they will be voted into the wilderness, like they were for forty years before Reagan. Even Americans get sick of self serving lies eventually. It may take real military defeat or some other unforeseen shock to bring this about, however.

Covid was a test of American character.

We failed.

At the federal level Republicans have been far more restrained than Democrats. Now, at the state level that may not be the case but that is due, in part, to the fact that the GOP owns the states right now. Elections have consequences.

Of course they will squander any opportunity they have. We don't even try to make change. Biden is republican lite. About 40% Crazies are in control of the country right now. We need to split the country in 2 and let the crazies bring down their own ship before they drag the rest of us into their Talibaptist hell.

You are insane if you think you can ever make the right see eye to eye with your beliefs. They hate you and your ideals. You can't live with these people anymore. It is time for 2 Americas. Do you think people like Bellringer care about your wellbeing as a fellow American? I overhear these people talk about they want liberals dead. They are insane. For our own safety we need to divide before civil war happens. They are arming up like crazy getting ready.

"It is time for 2 Americas. "

There are and always have been two: North and South.

If the country was split in two, the two halves would polarize and differences in the millions of people would soon become apparent. What would you do then? Split again andmake four countries just to see it happen all over again?

That's because they're generally good people with morals and character. Republicans have no such restraints.
Remember, nice guys finish last. But it's a righteous last.

" For our own safety we need to divide before civil war happens."

Dividing and arming doesn't prevent civil war ~~ it causes it.

And for the record, Republicans only understand how to abuse power ~ which is what we are witnessing every single day, from the top of the GOP down to the lowest denomination of crazies.

I applaud President Biden for not succumbing to the temptation to do the same thing. There is no such thing as fighting fire with fire without escalating the problem into an even bigger problem with no foreseeable end in sight.

Your suggesting is to turn a bonfire into a raging wildfire. Don't even think it. Let the man do his job.

Well stated. A coward doesn't run away from something that needs to be fixed. We elected Biden to preside over this country, not to run away from the troubles that plague her.

If people are looking for instant gratification from President Biden, they're not going to find it.

It cost a lot more in time (and money) to fix something than it does to break it.

I really don't want to live in a country with Qanon Trump supporters. They are corrupt evil people that don't deserve the right to be called Americans.

You know I respect the hell out of your opinions but I disagree on this part. You are right it takes a lot more time and money to fix then to break, but for all the effort it takes to fix, Republicans can break in 1/10 the effort. And they will, wasting our time and effort again and again. Let's start building America for Americans and let Nazistan do what Nazistan does. I am all 100 percent in for Cascadia or Pacifica, whatever you want to call it. We need to fortify the Sierra Nevadas and worry about our own. MC(or P)GA.

#18 - how would your splitting the country in two fix this problem? Round up the people you don't like and force them to live somewhere else Nazi style? I don't want to live in a country withere such a thing could happen. Nor do I want to live in a country that cowardly runs from its problems.

BOCAINK

What you say is true. The Republicans are still hard at work to knock down any semblance of normalcy in our Constitutional system of governance. Sometimes they even win a battle or two but they don't win the war.

One thing they lack, to their great disadvantage, is the power of the presidency and President Biden's 25 years of experience which he wields like a saber sword in the halls of Congress. It would be a mistake to underestimate Biden's intestinal fortitude, in spite of his calm and reasoned persona.

Where the Trump administration depended upon threats and violence, President Biden knows the path to success relies on negotiations. Nobody get everything they want ~ everybody gets some of what they want. (Example: Mitch McConnell wanted that new bridge between Kentucky and Cincinnati very much ~ if you get my drift. And, much like Little Bo Peep, where Mitch McConnell went, the rest were sure to follow.)

January 6 was a Hail Mary in my opinion. It was instigated by a man nearing the end of a slippery rope. There's not a doubt in anybody's mind that Trump will strike again. The next time with an even greater degree of desperation. The more success Biden has, the more determined Trump is to burn the house down. Unlike President Biden, he doesn't know how to do it any other way. It's the mobster in him and we all know where they ended up.

It's really Trump who is fighting an uphill battle. President Biden is doing just fine.

Ask Jefferson Davis.

#23 | Posted by snoofy at 2021-09-04 01:37 PM | Reply

What you have is the difference between the two governing philosophies. Dems believe in democracy, governing for the majority, equity, and lifting the downtrodden. If Dems were about power, they would have removed the recall provision from the state constitution after Gray Davis was recalled, but they didn't do that. The GQP no longer believes in democracy; they have become a party dedicated to autocracy, to minority rule, to elevating white xtian males above everybody else, to forcing the majority to live as the minority demands; they are all about power, having it, and wielding it.

All the gains Biden will be washed away by Republican corruption. They plan on stealing the next election with voting laws that are all about one party rule. Theirs. Twinpac is naive if she believes Biden is making lasting change.Republicans made lasting change by stacking the Supreme court and with their new voting laws. All we have done is some virtue signaling.

I also think the Democrats should stop mewling and fearing the Republicans and what evil they may do. It's that kind of spinelessness that makes the Democrats look weak.

It's like a sports team whose manager mealy-mouths his team to a reporter, "Gee, they might do these awful tings to us".

Give Biden some credit, you guys. He's smarter than you think if you believe the Republicans can get the best of him.

Nope. Just like the minority of conservative Californians are leaving for Texas, progressives in the south can move north. A grace period before the partition like Pakistan and India.

F**k the south and Ya'll Queda. If the want an impoverished theocracy they can have it.
