A coronavirus variant known as "mu" or "B.1.621" was designated by the World Health Organization as a "variant of interest" earlier this week and will be monitored by the global health body as cases continue to emerge across parts of the world.

About 2,000 mu cases have been identified in the United States, so far, according to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), the largest database of novel coronavirus genome sequences in the world. Most cases have been recorded in California, Florida, Texas and New York among others.

It's unclear how much protection the vaccines offer against this variant. "The Mu variant has a constellation of mutations that indicate potential properties of immune escape," the WHO said in a statement Tuesday, raising concerns that it may be more resistant to coronavirus vaccines than other variants. "But this needs to be confirmed by further studies," it added.

Fauci said that while laboratory data had shown that the mu variant can evade certain antibodies " among them those induced by vaccine shots " there is currently a lack of clinical data and other research involving people, showing this.

Pal Crdenas, a professor of infectious diseases and genomics at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, has studied mu and told The Post that current evidence showed that it was likely "more transmissible" than the original coronavirus strain. Mu has "been able to outcompete gamma and alpha in most parts of Ecuador and Colombia," he said.

Mu is the fifth "variant of interest" being monitored by the WHO. It has not yet been moved up to the WHO's list of "variants of concern" which currently includes the delta variant ravaging the United States, along with the alpha, beta and gamma variants that are deemed more transmissible or virulent by the public health body.

Here we go again... (sigh).

It will be here in large numbers next week. Americans have a short attention span. It has to get here quickly lest we start exercising our freedom to ignore our overlords.

"freedom to ignore our overlords."

Serious question:

Why do right-wingers always perceive themselves as victims?

Alphas aren't victims. But you sure are.

Doc, speaking of Tucson, I drive there once a week. It rained almost everyday in August , they got over eleven inches. The place has turned into the garden of Eden. Wildflowers up and down the highways. Everything is lush. Butterflys snd spotted hawk moths by the billions. Sand from the washes all over the roads.

And humid as hell.

BEUCEAZ - Those southern AZ August monsoons could be on-and-off, but when they hit - it was like all hell breaking loose followed by that unbelievable blooming of the high desert country you write about. It wasn't at all odd for folks to end up hanging with friends (if they had any) when caught on the "wrong" side of the river when the rain hit. George's Simenon caught it well in The Bottom of the Bottle (
en.wikipedia.org(novel)).
